351.0. "Disney Chat on America Online" by PHDVAX::JMCGLINCHEY () Sat Jul 03 1993 12:11

I have recently signed up for Americal On-line and have found it to be
pretty easy to use and quite inexpensive. Costs are under $10 per
month and include 5 hours of usage.

I'd like to propose a disney noters electronic meeting on AOL. If
anyone is interested we just have to pick a date and time and we could
meet in the "chat" area. This is like using PHONE, but with lots of
    people.

AOL also has a DISNEY conference are, like NOTES, but it is terribly
underused. I would also like to see if we could get our departed
friends to start noting in the AOL conference. It's located in the
    TRAVEL department.

    Any takers?

I would like to join in but I don't have an America on Line account.
How can I sign up for one. My husband has a modem hooked up to our PC,
I just need to get an AOL account so I can join you for the on-line

351.13your local computer store...PHDVAX::JMCGLINCHEYMon Apr 04 1994 18:349
Quickly run to your local computer software store and pick up and AOL
startup kit. It will include the software you need and 10 hours of
time. You can get working right away with this kit. The other way is
to get someone (like me) to have a kit sent to your home. The
disadvantage of this method is that you have to wait, the advantage is
that I get 5 free hours of connect time. ;^)

    John

351.14Save Time and Gas and Call AheadCUPMK::SCOPAMon Apr 04 1994 20:186
John's right. You need to load the software before you can get up and
running. Save time and use your phone to find an AOL kit.

    And we'll see you tonite.

351.15Disney Chat ResultsCUPMK::SCOPATue Apr 05 1994 15:2153
Well the Disney Chat on AOL was pretty interesting. It lasted almost
90 minutes. I had the opportunity to talk with some castmembers (CMs)
and found out a few things.

       - The Disney offices were pretty sad yesterday as Frank Wells was a
very popular person to the Disney employees.

       - There will be an Astro Orbiter attraction/ride in TomorrowLand (?)
         this year.

       - Are you visiting WDW in May or June? Well you may just be able to
visit Sunset Blvd. as this area may open then.

       - The B&TB stage show will close down this month and open up in the
new theater on Sunset Blvd. in mid-May...hint hint!

       - A press announcement on Sunset Blvd. will be forthcoming in two
         months (June).

       - Mission to Mars will be changed to Alien Encounter during the
         Summer.

       - CircleVision will be closed for refurbishing.

       - No date has been set to refurbish the Tiki Room.

       - The Lion King will take over Magic Journeys in the June-July
         timeframe.

       - Spaceship Earth will close in August for refurbishing.

       - Honey I blew Up the Audience will be in place by Summer. And yes
Michael Jackson's problems hastened this move.

I was talking with the person who worked with the animals used for the
lion animation in TLK and for Abu in Aladdin. The lion weighs 525 lbs.

I guess there will be an HBO special on Walt Disney soon. I don't know
    when.

The Disney castmembers aren't too crazy about Barbie!

Someone asked last night why there weren't more castmembers chatting
and one of them said that most Disney employees cannot afford a PC.

I guess that Official Album is being redone and the SpectroMagic song
will be among the new cuts on it.

All in all it was fun chatting with these people. I am looking forward
to next month's chat. These Disney chats take place on the first Monday
of every month from 9-10 P.M.

I have a new PC at home, and a free 10 trail to aol.
so, if all goes ok, I'll be seeing you tonight.
if.....
now I don't have the foggest what the number is, I ass u me that
the installation software knows so that it will do the dialing...

I didn't get the disney screen saver :-(, like to see it going first.
there's a lot of junk software out there...
351.25SETUP will set you up!PHDVAX::JMCGLINCHEYMon May 02 1994 17:539
SETUP will walk you through finding a local access number and a backup
number. It does this by using an 800 number for initial setup. After
that you are in fat city. It does all the dialing for you. It's
    pretty good at it.

It takes about 1/2 to get installed and setup. See you tonight on AOL?

    John M. (GLINCH@AOL.COM)

351.26The More the MerrierWREATH::SCOPAMon May 02 1994 18:404
That makes at least four noters (John, Ed, Kathy, and yours truly)
    on AOL tonight.

    Any more?
351.27how long will folks be on?CSC32::B_GRUBBSMon May 02 1994 19:116

yeah, just installed my free test kit this morning.....assuming I
can get home in time (7:00 pm MST). How long do these things usually
    go on?

end up as a 90 minute chat.

351.29Chat ChatterWREATH::SCOPATue May 03 1994 15:2539
Here are some highlights from last night's chat. I'll let "Glinch" fill
    in the rest.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror still has some scaffolding on it in
some spots so it's not ready yet...maybe some soft openings in late May
    or in June.

Sunset Blvd. will have a food court but I'm not sure if there will be
    any new restaurants.

The Lion King is still undergoing final production and colorization so
it may not be in theaters until mid June.

One person described the All Star Resorts as not as tacky as the
    models.

I got the feeling that "World of Motion" in Epcot was about to undergo
    some changes.

Innovations should be ready by July 1.

The MK and TomorrowLand is hoping to have Alien Encounter up and
    running by XMAS.

Disney's Animal Kingdom is slated to open by 1996...cutbacks have
caused the castmembers to refer to that park as "Disney's Minimal
    Kingdom."

I'll let John fill you guys in on the rest...maybe he'll grab the log
on Friday and put it in here.

At least one castmember participated in last night's chat. He works in
Epcot Operations and had a lot to say. I may be contacting him for info
as I get closer to my vacation.

Next chat is Monday, June 6th @9:00. Last night's chat continued for
    almost two hours.

351.30AOL Disney Chat in next replyPHDVAX::JMCGLINCHEYTue May 03 1994 15:485
The next note is the chat log from AOL's Disney chat dated May 2, 1994.
It is a long file so you may want to extract it and read it offline.

351.31He tried, but he couldn't do it...NPSS::BADGERCan DO!Tue May 03 1994 16:0028
Well, I *tried*

I couldn't get to the computer until 9PM. the registration did take 1/2 hour.

so its 9:30 PM, I'm in AOL. NOW WHAT!???

I found a lobby. it was 'full', I went to the next. I asked where to find the
disney converstation btw, i am 'EdbHudson'
the guide asked if I had a pc or mac, then sent me off to pc studios

nothing remotely resembling a chat going on. back to the rooms window.
go into the beginer's room. go guide [appeared to be a computerized greeting]
no one knew where to direct me. and so it went until 11:00PM

my opinion of AOL== a big thumbs down!

most of the rooms I went into had childish conversations.
and at 2400baud, it incredible that they expect to xmit windows.
its not my PC that slow, its fast. AOL is more like a turtle that got
run over by a car. maybe I'm pampered by Dec's network/notesfiles.

but, perhaps for any other new person, you might explain here how you
get to the conversations. its too late for me since I'm not going to pay
$3.50/hour for something I get here free.

but I don't like burham's book either......

TomTanida : That's more reasonable- the 4th is killer- I hear
they get upwards of 80000 that day
NikkNikk : mike scopa: no, but i've only been for a brief 2-day

KUNGALOOSH : LooN - call 1-407-W-DISNEY they've got tons of plans
                 for Honeymooners......

    Kristi LD : I can
LooNToonS : Ed, what do you think they gross there a day?
    MikeScopa : Nikk...wow a 2-day visit....you must have been pretty
                 pressed for time, huh?
NikkNikk : loon: wdw provides whole brochures for honeymooners.
a friend is going in june.

                 and lots!!
KUNGALOOSH : Laura - EXCELLENT point!!!
LooNToonS : Laura/Kung, we were thinkin about 1 wk WDW, and 1 wk
                 Carribean
NikkNikk : mike: yes, but i live only a 3 hour drive away.
LooNToonS : Laura, that makes sense

                 others!
NikkNikk : mike: i work in travel, & an agent friend tried to

                 weekend soon!!!!

EdwardV2 : MikScopa has a good point. When we were there during

MikeScopa : Kung...I think the games end in late June...all the
crazy soccer fans go home then.
LooNToonS : Kung, thats a different story, but I dont think we're
                 that kind of couple....LOL
KUNGALOOSH : Nikk - OOOPS!! Silly me!!!
LooNToonS : Laura, we went 9-92, for a week...this will just be a

This months chat on AOL was alot of fun for us "Disney-holics". It
also shows that we are not alone. The room capacity is only 23 people.
I do believe that the chat is now so popular that we are turning people
away. If you want to join us then you should login early next month.

I'm going to send some msgs to laura237 to suggest that we try to get a
larger conf. room for future and maybe even have a moderated discussion
with some official disney type folks.

In the least, this is a great way for us to keep in touch with those of
us who are already gone from this net and those of us who will be gone.

Mike, can you get in touch with Len, Claude and other past Mod's and
get them to logon to aol? It would be great to have them involved.
You may also want to start a sep. topic just for the chat logs if we
    continue to upload them.

All in all it was too short, too fast and not enough. I will
definately be a regular on this chat. Also, the travel conf. has the
disney FAQ's and the "very unofficial guidebook" online. The
FAQmeister, Tom Tonida, was online last night along with the author of
    the guidebook.

    re: .31

You have to go to the travel center and then to the "Travel Cafe'".
There are many chat areas on AOL (and other svcs) some are generic,
like the lobby's and others are specific, like the "Travel Cafe'".
Check it out ahead of time so that you can find it next month. It
    really is worth it.

AOL and the other svcs are so full of info that they can be
overwhelming to navigate. Either use the online keyword list to search
for what you want or start from the departments window. Sometimes
things overlap and it can get confusing.

Also, 9600 buad access is available for all systems. They have kits
for PC's (DOS and Windows), Mac's and Apple II systems (IIc and IIe).

Hope you have better luck next time.

My modem will go up. I didn't see any local numbers southern NH that went
above 2400.

you are still talking greek in ref to travel center and cafe.

how about starting from where you make the connection?

one could spend hours [I did] and get NOWHERE.

If I had known your name and Mike's i could have searched... now I know.

but really, looking through your log, and seeing what I saw in other
'rooms', there's not much to be gained at $3.50/hour!

you did give one piece of good advice, don't come to the appointed hour
and expect to start up. plan to get there hours in advance, it will take that
long.

Here's what you need to do to get connected next month.

    1) Install the AOL software and get connected with a local line. 2400
baud works fine for the chats. 9600 becomes useful for downloads.
    2) Under the GOTO menu select the DEPARTMENTS item.
    3) Click on the TRAVEL & SHOPPING icon.
    4) Click on the TRAVEL FORUM icon.
    5) Click on the TRAVEL CAFE' icon.

That's it. Your there! Hope that clears up any confusion for new AOL
    users.

As for value of AOL, you will have to judge that for yourself. I use
AOL for both business and personal uses. They kids have gotten lots of
use of the encylopedia, I've done lots of downloading and the internet
mail and newgroups are very useful. Then, of course, there is the
monthly Disney Chat. Works for me! ;^)

I had heard a long time ago (back in 1986) that Lego was very interested in
having Denmark as part of the World Showcase. As a matter of fact, back then
I had heard that the opening was not in the too distant future...

351.40Last Night's Chat and AOL stuffWREATH::SCOPATue Jun 07 1994 12:5233
Well the Disney Chat last night was not one of the more memorable ones.

I did not see any of the noters in here "in the room" during the 90
    minute chat.

During the chat I found out...

         - Sorcery in the Sky will not be run during the Summer.

         - There will be a new nighttime celebration at MGM Studios.

         - EO is still at EPCOT.

         - Splashtacular fountain stays but show goes this week.

         - Mickey Mania Parade is a hit.

         - The real reason for The Disney Decade (will post in appropriate
           note).

Unfortunately there were no castmembers at the chat last night. One of
the more knowledgeable CMs was en route to Cal. so he wasn't there. A
few other regulars weren't there either.

After the chat I did some exploring on AOL and found a few other areas
that contain info on WDW and Disney. Those areas plus AOL's Internet
Center pretty much makes AOL a good source for any Disney info.

I don't know when the next chat will take place as the first Monday in
July is the 4th. As soon as I find out I will post that info here. I
will not be able to take part in next month's chat.

351.45Can book Disney hotels on AOLMAGEE::GIBSONMon Jul 11 1994 18:4419
Did you know that it is possible to make your own reservations at WDW
hotels via SAABRE and AOL? The hotel chain code DW is for the same WDW
hotels that are reserved through the CRO. The list of hotels also
indicates at a glance the lowest rate currently available. Port Orleans
was listed with $113 because all of the $89 rooms were booked.

I reserved our room about 1:30AM today. The confirmation number should
    be on the itinerary tonight.

It saves having to ask a lot of questions about rate availability. Of
course, if you are trying to book a special, the CRO contact is
    necessary.

It was also fun to check out the airfares. Finding a $249 round-trip
fare in November helped to convince my husband to go back to the world
    again.

Last night on the Disney Chat we had a few cast members as well as an
assortment of Disneyholics. Here are some interesting tidbits that came
    out of the chat:

      - There was a suicide at the DisneyLand Hotel in Aneheim last week.

      - The Muppets may be leaving Disney. Apparently contract renewal
talks have fallen through. This could mean that Brian Henson may
take his Muppets and run once the present contract runs out.

My take on all this is that Henson may feel that he has an
opportunity to get into the theme park business on his own. I also
think that the talks broke down because Eisner is having a bad year
and is not giving off warm and fuzzy vibes to anyone.

      - Regarding the comparison of room sizes between the WL and CBR, the
CBR rooms are 240 sq. feet and the WL has 260 sq feet. I think the
difference is the distance between the door and the first bed.

      - The TZTOT was down for awhile because one of the elevator walls
        blew out.

      - I was told that Pocahontas trailers will be put on TLK movie when
        it returns in late November.

      - Horizons is back up and running but Spaceship Earth is down. When
SE is back up after the refurbishing then Horizons may be closed
for good. Lack of sponsorship has put Horizons in Limbo.

      - Blizzard Beach will be about half the size of Typhoon Lagoon.

      - Bob Weis, Sr. VP of WDI's Virginia Project, resigned last week.

There were as many as 34 people at the chat. The hour went by fast.

I will try to post the log file in here if/when I get it.

Maybe we can try to solicit a sponsor for Horizons? Or maybe a "Save
    Horizons write in campaign? :^)

I wonder why GE backed out of that pavillion?

No Muppet 4D possibly in the future? That would be tragic IMHO.

Yeah, especially since the Muppets have become a bit entrenched into
MGM. I think Henson may be a bit ticked off that the Muppets aren't
allowed to roam around like the Disney characters.

Hmm, I thought Henson decided the Muppets wouldn't be roaming around.
I think that info is in this conference and would have been entered
around the time they decided to rip out the old Muppet stage show.
I'll try to remember to look it up later.

351.52Chat ReportWREATH::SCOPATue Oct 04 1994 12:4435
Well last night's Disney chat included two present Disney mods (Linda
    G. and yours truly) and one former mod (Claude Berube).

Here are some tidbits from the chat. Linda, feel free to add anything
you picked up that I overlook.

      - Through popular demand 20,000 Leagues will be reopening. Too many
complaints. I guess with attendance down they are careful not to
        tick off any more visitors.

      - The Magic Kingdom bricks are selling well (or so it seems).

      - Sorcery in the Sky is back.

      - All-Star resorts are still not being received too well.

      - For those of you who intend on staying at the Wilderness Lodge, the
only complaint seems to be the WDW transportation (not enough I
guess) to and from the Lodge.

      - Also, someone at the chat (his name is TIGGER...could be a CM)
mentioned a DL and WDW map for Windows. This map has hot spots
        which offer info when clicked.

      - AOL also has a Destination Florida Forum that has some WDW photos
in GIF format. They have the Wilderness Lodge, Lion King, Mickey
Mania Parade, TZTOT, and SSB for those interested.

The highest number of people at any time during the chat was around 34.
That's not bad considering everyone was on AOL last night to talk with
Mick Jagger who was LIVE in another forum.

Hope to see more of you on AOL as time goes on.

It was good to hear from Claude last night. I missed some of the
conversation because we were sending instant messages back and forth.
I am asking TiggerO1 for the maps (hope there is enough space on
my system to handle it) and will let you know how they are.

I'll review the transcript when it's available.

A reminder that tonight is the AOL Disney Chat at 9:00 PM. Just read
the transcript of last month's session over the weekend. There were
at least four cast members (from various parts of the country)
    participating.

I downloaded the interactive WDW map that one of the chatters had filed
into the travel library. Although there have been some additions to the
parks since this 1993 layout was done, the software is impressive and
the information useful. Included with the interactive maps are .bmp
files for wallpaper. My PC now has the MK map as the wallpaper on it.

Hope to see you online tonight.

351.55AOL Disney Chat for Dec '94WREATH::SCOPATue Dec 06 1994 13:5039
Last night was the monthly America Online Disney Chat. This monthly
get together is growing in leaps and bounds. Earlier in the year these
chats would draw mabe 22-24 people. Last night we almost hit the 40
    mark.

This leads to many conversations and also makes it tought to follow
what's going on. Also, "Instant Messages", which are private messages
between two people, makes it real hard to catch up on the
    conversations.

These chats can also give you a BIG case of the -ITIS when many of the
participants are a few days or weeks from visiting WDW. Such was the
case last night. Many were going to WDW this week (sigh).

Anyway, I will post the log when Laura (chat host) puts it in the
    library.

Here are some of the things I caught last night, details when I get
    them:

           - Jodi Newell was on board last night and it was nice to
hear from her. She's working again.

           - Spaceship Earth has a new movie.

           - The Honey I shrunk the Audience attraction has better special
             effects than the Muppets.

           - Captain EO may land in TL in TMK...I hope not.

           - A ton of people are ordering those bricks.

           - Annual Passport prices are going up.

           - The Indy Jones attraction in DL has a ton of AA snakes.

    That's it for now.

Here are some tidbits from last night's chat:

        - Blizzard Beach opens in April.
        - The TZTOT supposedly has a new ending.

Also, for those of you who have AOL check out the Disney password and
go into the brand new Walt Disney World Resort area.

This area has loads of info...not like this conference of course but
    plenty just the same.

You can check out .gif files, operating times, Disney forums, and all
    kinds of neat stuff.

It's sort of the Mother of all Disney Home Pages.

ERR, moderator, your notice is out of date "Disney Chat tonight @9PM"
is old. I know, last night after seeing the notice during the day,
I tried for the chat. even got to the right place. then I discovered
that it wasn't last night. So instead, I set up a disney-ittis chat
room, talked with a CM from WL.

I listened to the chat last night. Linda Gibson was there and says hi.

I really didn't say too long, conversations all over the place about
nothing. Typhoon lagoon is closed in December.

BUT, AOL does have a GREAT area for downloading .GIFs of everything
Disney. You can get just about any shot. makes great wallpaper. my
favorite was Figment. Disney area is very well done.

351.61Tough to ChatWREATH::SCOPATue Nov 07 1995 13:1511
The chat has become a problem because of the rambling that goes on
between many people. I think I may ask Laura (chat host) to send out
some type of survey regarding this problem.

I think the chat should be divided into two or three segments. One
segment should be devoted to WDW/DL, another segment to films, and
    then an "open" time.

Until that happens I will probably stay off of the chat.
