258.0. "Where can I (really) swim?" by BOMBE::HALL (Judy Hall) Tue May 07 1991 17:08

I'll be at Walt Disney World next week, and would like to know where
I can swim. My first choice is open water, where I don't have to do lots
of turning (but I'm not fond of alligators or snakes). Second choice is
a 25-or-more-meter pool with lap lanes. I'm unclear about whether any of
the water attractions offer opportunities for serious swimming. I'll be
staying at the Polynesian, and don't know anything about the size or
crowdedness of their pool. Can anyone fill me in on the options?

Thanks.
Judy Hall

The Pool at the Lake Buena Vista Club House (Magnolia Golf Course?), is
usually uncrowded and peaceful. I don't remember if there were any lap
    lanes though.

The Disney Inn pool wasn't that crowded mid morning or late afternoon
back in '87 when I visited.

The pool at the Vacation Villa's was always uncrowded whenever I went
there, don't remember any marking for lap lanes..

The large pool at the Contemporary had lap lane if I remember right but
was crowded as well. All the resorts off the MK monorail run are
crowded due to the easy access for WDW resort quests that are visiting
the parks and want a quick swim in the afternoon.

As to the CBR or the Epcot resort, someone else will have to fill you
in on those, but my guess wilbe that they would be crowded due to the
easy access from Epcot for WDW guess for that afternoon swim etc.

I don't think you'll have to worry much about crowds anywhere next
week. May is one of the slower months at WDW.

The largest pool in the World, for that matter one of the largest
Orange County (if you belive Birnbaum), is the 330,000 gallon one at
River Country. I've not seen it in person, but it looks huge in the
    photos.

You could also swim at any of the beaches. The Poly sits on Seven Seas
    Lagoon.

Are the beaches in fact open again after the pollution problem from the
    hot weather of last year.

    Judy,

If your're an early riser the crowds at most of the pools aren't bad.
There is a second smaller pool at the Poly that never seemed crowded
both times we were there. Its not that big but has no slides=no kids.
It's located in the righthand cluster of longhouses as you face the MK.
The set up at the lagoon beaches is a fairly small roped off area.

    re.4

Is this referring to the amoeba problem in central Fla. last summer due
to the high water temps. If it is I seem to recall some health
officials saying it would die of as soon as the water temps. dropped
    below 80`

258.6River Country with Ft. Wilderness...BUFFER::WESTONWed May 08 1991 19:539

At River Country, they have a huge pool. Also right around the corner
is FT. Wilderness and their MAIN Beach is right there, on the lagoon.
It is a good size, nice area to get away too, for a change from the
    Poly.

    Have fun!

    Len,

How does that pool at River Country compare in size to the Wave Pool at
    TL?

The basenote caught my attention. I swim a mile and a half every
day for a workout, and I want to get in at least a few workouts
during my week in Disney. I called customer relations.

They don't have any designated lap swim areas, though many pools
are marked with lines on the bottom and such. Pools officially
open at 7AM, and you can't expect others not to get in your way
if you want to do laps. But they also said that you are allowed
to swim in the pools during unofficial times too if you don't
make too much noise or get too rowdy. Lap swimming would not
be considered noisy or rowdy. So if you get there before the
posted opening times, you should find the pool relatively empty
and should be able to swim laps.

This from my own personal book of info:

There is also a YMCA in downtown Orlando (approx 1/2 hour away)
where you can also swim laps. If you are a member of one YMCA,
most YMCAs nationwide will honor your membership from other
places under their AWAY program (Always Welcome At the Y).

So if I strike out at the Disney pools, I'll consider visiting the
    	YMCA a few times.

More details on that Orlando YMCA. It's on International
Drive, phone 407-363-1911. They will accept my YMCA membership
from Colorado, and not charge a fee. (Some YMCAs will charge
a small $1-$5 fee to accpet your AWAY-YMCA membership.)

They have 3 indoor pools including an olympic-sized lap pool.
    	(I don't know if that means 25 or 50 yards/meters.)

    	re my previous few entries:

Well, I never had to use the YMCA. I did my lap swimming at
the large pool at the Dolphin hotel. Both the Dolphin and the
Swan have long (33 1/3 yard-long) pools with lane lines. The
one at the Dolphin was better though. And with the other pools
also at the Dolphin, the lap pool was only used by lap swimmers.

FYI, there is a really fun "play" pool at the Dolphin with
bridges, waterfalls and a small water slide. There is also
a salt water wading pool, and sever jacuzzis.
