162.0. "Disney Videos" by INDMKT::GOLDBERG (Len, Back From the World) Tue Feb 06 1990 16:25

We don't have a topic that discusses Disney Videos specifically, so I
    thought I'd start one.

I know this might be a little off the intent of the topic (movies)
but I thought I would ask anyway. I have in the past rented video's
of WDW at my local video store. I belong to 3 of these stores and if
I can recall, all of these video's are at least 5 years old.

My question is are there a number of video's on WDW available, and
are they up to date, or am I stuck with old hat ??

P.S. I know I could take a camcorder and make my own, but that's a
          different subject.

re: Disney waits years before releasing their stuff on video.

There are two reasons why this is not longer true. The first is that
films on the shelf are like money in the bank, and Disney has first
hand experience of someone trying to buy the company and using those
films to pay for the takeover. The second is that industry is changing.
Videos are becoming a "sell-through" item rather than a rental item and
Disney in particular has had more success with sell-through than other
    studios.

A side effect of Disney moving to sell-though is that they must make
new films rather than depend on releasing an old film.

Not at all off the subject, in fact I had intended to ask a similar
question. I've never seen these tapes for rent anywhere and wanted to
know if they were worth purchasing. I was thinking of editing together
some stock footage with my own and customizing it.

I seem to recall seeing two of these at the Disney Stores and at WDW.
One was a generic WDW tape, and one was Epcot Center. I found it
interesting that the tapes were available in Beta (NTSC) and (VHS) PAL
two formats that are very difficult to find in the US.

I forgot about the Epcot tape. I think a non-DECie friend of mine
has both of these tapes. I'm going to check these out again to see
just how dated they are. To expand on my original note, I'd like
to see something new recorded in VHS Hi-fi. The ones that are
available now are mono linear track recordings and the actual film
quality (looks like the 60's) leaves alot to be desired.

I am psyched to hear "Little Mermaid" is coming out on video so soon.
It was the most wonderful and happy movie I have seen in a long time.
It is unusual for a Disney film to come out so quick though. Does
anyone know what the movie is up for at the Oscars, I definatley think
    it deserves something!

No, no one knows what Oscars The Little Mermaid is up for since the
nominations won't be announced until next week. You can be sure it
    will win some though.

I hate to be a party-pooper, but I don't think the titles listed are
Disney releases (well, obviously, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" is). I
find it a little hard to believe that Disney would release these films
all at the same time and with little to no pre-publicity.

I'm still hoping that the rumors are true about "The Little Mermaid".
That would be a fun one to add to the collection...

My parents just came back from Walt Disney World, with a video of Epcot
and Disney MGM, the video was *GREAT* I'm sure a the tape will not last
a year with all the time a plan on viewing it. I my self have been
there on 12 vacation's, because my grandmother lives in Orlando and for
the fact that my whole family is crazy about this place! When our
whole family get's together the conversation always seems to end up on
Walt Disney World and the great time we always have there...
Anyway back to the video our families first, I have forgotten the
music that is all over the park, back round music as if you were in a
movie. Looks as though I will have to go very soon. My last visit has
been last September. That time we went on the Disney/Cruise and what a
vacation that was, very cost effective and a vacation that only Disney
can deliver. We did not say in Walt Disney World but at the Hyatt Grant
Cypree the best hotel this Disney noter as stayed in.

I have a 2 1/2 year old that already has a collection of Disney
videos. I would love to add Little Mermaid since we have seen it
    three times in the movies.

The following Disney videos are usually in stock at Disney stores.

    Cinderella
    Sword and the Stone
    Bambi
    Dumbo
    Sleeping Beauty*
    Lady and the Tramp
    Mary Poppins
    Alice in Wonderland

They have pulled Sleeping Beauty from the shelves.

I have all but Sword in the Stone. That will be my next purchase.

Also, for those Pinocchio (sp) fans. I saw this in the video store.
I was told it was released 5 years ago and only video stores can buy
it is not for public release. If anyone sees it for sale please
let me know or knows someone that could get one I would love to
    add it to my collection.

Comment on releases: I can't see Disney ever releasing Snow White
or Fantasia because they make so much in the re-releases each time.
But I'll be the first to say if it happens I'll buy them.

    Just me two cents......

I read in one of the UK Sunday papers yesterday that Disney was
removing several titles from general release after "being available
for 6 months", to "preserve the magic of these films".

I can't remember all the titles mentioned (I forgot to tear the
relevant section out of the paper before I threw it out!), but
from memory they were all the classic ones ..... Pinnocchio (sp?),
the aformentioned Sleeping Beauty etc etc.

Not sure whether this was just in the UK though.

I just called one of the Disney Stores here in Southern California and
asked about LADY AND THE TRAMP. What Disney does with the classics is
release them for about a 6 month period and then stops production.
BAMBI and CINDERELLA also fit into this situation. I was told that they
do this on a seven year cycle.

The Disney Store said to contact a place here in So. Cal. called
"The Wherehouse". They are about the largest place to find records,
tapes, and videos, according to the Disney Store. They would be the
best bet in locating the video. I asked about calling the studio here
in Burbank, but the Disney Store informed me that they wouldn't have a
copy either.

Here are the addresses and telephone numbers from my telephone book for
"The Wherehouse" in my area. The Disney Store said that you should ask for
special orders.

I hope this helps,
Bill

Disney does one production run when a movie is released on videotape.
When the stock is gone, no more are made until Disney decides to
release it again. (I have never heard a Disney representative say seven
years and suspect that it is rumor is based on the old movie theater
strategy.) Stores have the option of sending any unsold tapes back to
the distributor or keeping them in stock until they are sold. If you
are looking for an 'out-of-print' tape, do the same as with an
out-of-print book, check the small independent stores (such as my
wife's bookstore) that might keep the item in stock. The chain stores
    usually send the item back.

Two treats are better than one!!!!

Treat one: I picked up the tape yesterday, the kids were ecstatic!!

Treat two: When I got home UPS had delivered a package. It was a tape
on WDW. How I got this was; this past November when at EPCOT we
toured the GM sponsored pavillion on motion. In the area where GM was
displaying it's latest models there was a counter with some bouchures
so I took one. All you had to do was visit your local GM dealer, have
them fill out the "dealer information" section and check off either a
free WDW VCR tape or a free travel guide. For obvious reasons I took
the tape. It's entitled "Make Your Own Magic" and is aproximately 23
minutes long. In a nutshell it's a 23 minute commercial on WDW with a
few subliminal ads for GM. If they had "CALL 1-800-DISNEY" at the end
I would've been tempted to do just that. I've got Disney-itis all over
again and it's only been 3 months since our last trip!!!!

I was just at Lechmere at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH.
They had PLENTY of copies of "Lady and the Tramp". So I didn't
get the last copy after all. Sorry for the misinformation.

FWIW - I was at Lechmere because all of their Disney videos are
on sale - including "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids". The problem is
I can't afford to buy a copy of each video. Does anyone know
which videos are most likely to be pulled soon? Do the Mini-Classics
or Winnie the Pooh tapes get pulled too?

Ruth, what is the percent off? I saw an ad Sunday for "Honey, I Shrunk
the Kids" for $16.95. I believe this was either at "Ames" or "Stuarts".
Inside the package is a $3.00 rebate too.

It's odd that they have so many copies of "Lady and the Tramp". I went
to over ten stores before someone in this notesfile mentioned Lechmere,
and all of those store said that it was no longer being sold because
Disney wasn't releasing any more copies at this time.

    Here's what I remember:

I believe the ad said all Disney videos are on sale. This probably
doesn't include the Touchstone stuff. "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"
was not advertised as part of the Disney stuff.

"Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" was listed at 18.99 and was on sale
      for 16.99 - so I bought it

The classics (like Cinderella, Mary Poppins, etc.) are on sale
      for about $20.

The Mini Classics, Sing alongs, Winnie the Poohs, etc. are on
      sale for about $10.

FWIW - I have no connection with Lechmere other than shopping there.
I usually buy my Disney videos there because their prices are
lower than the Disney Store's price even after the Magic Kingdom Club
    discount.

I bought my copy of the Little Mermaid today at my local Disney
store in NJ. Disney Stores are selling the video on a prepaid
basis until May 15th. You pay
19.95 minus the 10% MKC discount and they will get the videos on
May 16th, two days before everyone else. With purchase you also
get a Mermaid watch. You can beat the deal.

I just picked up mine from the Disney store at the Pheasant run mall in
Nashua, N.H. I had ordered it a month ago. The cute thing about the
early order is that you also receive a childs Little Mermaid watch
    free.

The price on the outside of the wrapping is $19.99. You can get your
10% MKC discount on it at the DIsney store.

Anyone else seen it advertised elsewhere?

There is also a $3 mail-in rebate. So, I paid $19.99 minus the 10% MKC and

    5/15.

If you still want one they are now selling them at the Disney store
    for $6.

I have seen some stores selling the video for $23.99 so got to the

A few weeks ago I called the number for WDW Mail Order, to see what
tapes are available on WDW (see 179.2 for number). The only tape that
the mail order division had and knew about was 'A Dream Called..' which
features WDW pre-Epcot days. The person I talked too after talking to
her supervisor mention that Disney is working on a new one but is
waiting for contruction to die down for a while prior to release, what
they going to wait 'till 2001? after the Disney Decade? I asked, she
said she doesn't have a date but should be in a few years ;^(.

There is another way to get a tape on the latest stuf though, and it'll
cost you $45 dollars to do so. And that is to get the MKC Gold Card,
which among the things you get is the 'MKC Gold Card Disney '90' tape.
This tape features (in addition to being a MKC vacation package
commercial) basicly what's new at the Parks in WDW in the past year or
so, such as all of DISNEY/MGM Studios, The Living Body and NORWAY
(EPCOT), Dream Flight (MK), along with a review of Typhoon Lagoon,
Pleasure Island, Discovery Island, River Country, as well as all the
Resorts (minus Yatch and Beach Club). It also covers what new at
Disneyland (Splash Mountain), Spruce Goose and Queen Mary and the
    cruises that the MKC offers.

No I didn't join the Gold Card, Someone in Salem who did leant me the
tape this past week (of which I made a copy). Now if I could only get
that EPCOT tape that is rumored to be around.

We went to see The Jungle Book at the drive-in in Milford, NH last
week. Before the show started, my sister and I spoke with a man
who owns a video store (he claims the need to complete his daughter's
Disney video collection made this a necessity). He says that all
Disney videos except The Little Mermaid can no longer be ordered. I
took that to mean they will not be available in stores much longer.
He also said The Jungle Book is supposed to come out on video for
    Christmas.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to these rumors? I've noticed
a lack of Disney videos in various stores so there may be some truth
to the first one. As for The Jungle Book being released for Christmas,
I'm not sure what to believe. Peter Pan is due out some time this
fall and that would conflict with The Jungle Book. But, Disney has
had a habit of re-releasing its films to the theaters and then
releasing them on video tape shortly after so I guess it's possible.

On another subject, the video store owner said he had to pull the
older Disney videos from his shelves as they are becoming collectors
items and are likely to be stolen. I think he said you can easily
get $150-$200 for a couple of them. I can't remember which ones but
I think he said Pinocchio and 101 Dalmations.

    Ruth,

As I and others have stated in this topic and possibly elsewhere,
Disney does what they call a limited release on their videos. That is
they make up X number of tapes, those that are not order by the stores
initialy are placed in a wharehouse, when the supply runs out that's
it. So probably what the guy meant by not being able to order certain
videos is that they have reach the end of the supply. I can see how
some tapes can be collector items, since they have not been readily
    available for a while.

    Claude,

Actually, what he said is they're not listed in the catalog anymore
so you can't order them. I don't know what this really means since
I've had no experience with ordering videos - I only buy what's on
the shelf. I understand about the limited releases, it's just kind
of shocking to hear they're running out at the same time. I'm tempted
to go to The Disney Store and ask what they have listed as being
    available.

162.57GM's 'Make Your Own Magic' videoATE012::BERUBECalling Dick Tracy, Det..Wed Jul 25 1990 12:4727
    re: .21, .51 and .53

Well thanks to Ruth Lowell for picking up a few extra copies of the
GM World Of Motion booklet with the free 'Make Your Own Magic' VHS
video offer and the fact I had just purchase a new Olds Cutluss Supreme
SL for my SO, I now have a copy of "Make Your Own Magic'.

The funny thing is that the Sales Manager at Merrimack Street Garage in
Manchester NH had never heard of this offer, since GM has been doing
this for a while now. I remember picking up a similar booklet back in
'87 with a similar offer, but didn't take GM up on it, due to the fact
of not owning a vcr at the time, or in the market for a new Car (Don't
like testing driving new cars unless I'm buying, something to do about
Car Salespersons if you now what I mean ;^)).

Overall the tape is pretty good considering it's free (well you do have
to go to WDW or have someone pick up a booklet for you and visit you
local GM dealer for a test drive etc.). The quality of the video is a
lot better than the 'A Dream Called WDW' of '71 or the 'EPCOT' tape of
'82. The tape does a fair job of covering all three Parks, Typhoon
Lagoon, Pleasure Island in a glossary fashion, but it doesn't cover any
of the resorts or RC, but it covers WDW to give you the itch. However
the other 2 tapes I mention above and the one I mention back in .51,
cover WDW in more detail, although being somewhat dated.

be of interest to readers of this newsgroup:

The back of The Little Mermaid CD states that Disney has 28 animated
feature films. Nobody on rec.arts.anime was able to come up with a definitive

The following is the list provided by Ron Azuma, resorted into chronological
order. An asterisk after a title indicates that it has been released on
video tape.

1} Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
 2} Pinocchio (1940) *
 3} Fantasia (1940)
 4} Dumbo (1941) *
 5} Bambi (1942) *
 6} Saludos Amigos (1943)
7} The Three Caballeros (1945) * [see below]
 8} Make Mine Music (1946)
9} Fun and Fancy Free (1947)
10} Melody Time (1948)
11} The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
12} Cinderella (1950) *
13} Alice in Wonderland (1951) *
14} Peter Pan (1953) [to be released this Christmas]
15} Lady and the Tramp (1955) *
16} Sleeping Beauty (1959) *
17} 101 Dalmations (1961)
18} The Sword in the Stone (1963) *
19} The Jungle Book (1967)
20} The Aristocats (1970)
21} Robin Hood (1973)
22} The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
23} The Rescuers (1977)
24} The Fox and the Hound (1981)
25} The Black Cauldron (1985)
26} The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
27} Oliver and Company (1988)
28} The Little Mermaid (1989) *

I can personally verify that _The Three Caballeros_ is out on video tape, due
to having watched it. According to promotional literature that was packaged
with my VHS copy of _The Little Mermaid_, _Peter Pan_ will be released during
the Christmas season. I contacted Disney's corporate headquarters a few weeks
ago to enquire about future releases. Besides mentioning _Peter Pan_, I was
told that another Classic (I was not given a title) will also be released some
time soon. I hope the mystery film is _Snow White_, but time will tell.

sing along to the happiest songs on earth!

Running time is listed as 29 minutes.

    Song titles listed are:

        "Whistle While You Work"

When I was younger, the Davy Crockett series was run on TV. It was sort
of a mini-series on the Wonderful World of Disney. Does anyone happen
to know if this series is available on videocassette yet? If not, will
it be in the near future? I visited the Alamo recently and it wet my

Ahhhh Davy Crockett. I'll never forget the sight of Davy defending the
Alamo against Santa Anna (?). Ol' George is killed after Jim Bowie dies
valiantly...I think he did in about eight guys before he bought the
    farm.

And then there's Davy Crockett who we never see get killed. Instead the
Disney people show him continuing to defend the Alamo while the enemy
sneaks up behind him. I've always thought of that scene and how the
Disney folks decided not to show Crockett's demise.

I was at Tower Records in Boston over the weekend and saw a few new
Disney releases, all with a Halloween theme. There are three new
tapes, two under the "Cartoon Classics" banner and one "Mini-Classic".

I can't remember the names of the two "Cartoon Classics" tapes, but one
featured three cartoons with Donald Duck (I think it might be called
"Donald's Scary Stories"). One of the cartoons on this tape features
Donald and a gorilla and unfortunately, I don't know what the other two
are. The other tape has Huey, Dewie, and Louie on the cover (I think)
but features cartoons with the Disney gang, including one where Mickey,
Donald, and Goofy are detectives investigating the "ghoulings-on" at a
    haunted house.

If anyone can fill in a few details as to what the rest of these 'toons
    are, it'd be greatly appreciated.

The "Mini-Classic" is indeed a classic and very appropriate for your
Halloween video collection. If you haven't guessed it by now, you have
a pumpkin for a head (just kidding... that's really a blatant hint).
Anyways, it's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", back on video, but with a
steep $19.99 price tag (that's suggested retail, folks).

I haven't picked any of these up yet, but soon "Sleepy Hollow" will be
added to my collection but I still haven't got my copy of "The Little
Mermaid" and now "Peter Pan" is on it's way... Sheesh, what a Disney

I was in Lechmere the other night so I can provide a few more details
on those new cartoon releases. Under the "Cartoon Classics" banner
come two tapes, "Donald's Scary Tales" and "Halloween Haunts."

"Donald's Scary Tales" feature the famous duck in the following shorts:
"Donald and the Gorilla" (a Donald vs. the Nephews story), "Donald's
Lucky Day" (Donald, a black cat, and a time bomb), and "Duck Pimples"
(Donald contracts a rare skin disease... just kidding).

"Halloween Haunts" contains "Lonesome Ghosts" (Mickey, Donald, and
Goofy as "ghostbusters"), "Pluto's Judgement Day" (Pluto picks on a
kitten and his dreams pick back), and "Trick or Treat" (another Donald
vs. the Nephews short, but Huey, Dewey, and Louie have Witch Hazel on
    their side).

These two tapes, along with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," are
available at Lechmere, regularly priced $11.99 each, but they're on
    sale this week for $8.98.

    Here's a follow-up to my own reply...

"Dick Tracy" was indeed released on video last month. We rented it and
I was pretty disappointed that the Roger Rabbit short, "Roller Coaster
Rabbit" was not included on the video. Just a warning for those of you
who were expecting it (as I was)...

Also, it seems that some video stores are running a special of sorts
for buying the "Dick Tracy" video. You can buy a "previously-viewed"
copy for around $25 and I believe there's some rebate ($5?) from Disney
    as well.

And for those of you who haven't bought their copies of "The Little
Mermaid" or "Peter Pan" yet, there was a half-page ad in the Globe last
Thursday that essentially warned, "Buy your copy now because they won't
be around for long." You can take that as a ploy to sell more copies
or as a genuine "threat", it's up to you.

situations, this one comes with a free Jungle Book related watch.
Also, the card stated something about a $5 mail-in rebate with

I picked up my "Jungle Book" video on April 30 (the day it was available).
The Jungle Book watch isn't quite as nice, in my opinion, as the Tinkerbell
watch that came with "Peter Pan" (not that either of them are especially
high-quality :-) ).

It was so great to see "Jungle Book" again! I missed it on its last big-screen
go-round, so it's been quite a number of years since I'd seen it.

Next on the Disney Home Video list is "The Rescuers Down Under." Also, there
are some previews of "Beauty and the Beast." I think the girl doing Beauty's
(whom they've given the name Belle) voice might be the same one who did Ariel
in "The Little Mermaid"; in the brief excerpt they showed of Belle (Beauty)
singing, her voice sounded quite similar. But the only voice-person they
explicitly mentioned/showed was Angela Lansbury, who is the voice of a teapot.
(There seems to be a scene of dancing & singing crockery, etc.)

Disney's released three more "Mini-Classic" videos...

"Willie the Singing Whale" chronicles the adventures of an opera-
singing whale who wants to perform at the Met. Also on the tape are
the Oscar-winng "Ferdinand the Bull" and "Lambert the Sheepish Lion."

"Peter and the Wolf," Disney's version of the Prokofiev (sp?) classic.
Also included are "Symphony Hour" (featuring Mickey and the gang) and
another short (can't remember the title) but it features a battle
between an island of jazz instruments versus an island of classical.

Lastly, there's "Prince and the Pauper, the new featurette which was
release with "The Rescuers Down Under" just last Christmas.

Disney is also running a promotion where if you buy two of their videos
(not just these three, the other tapes like DuckTales, Rescue Rangers,
etc. are included as well), you can send for a Pluto puppet for only
$2.99 plus shipping and handling. While supplies last, of course.

From today's USA Today (August 20):

Beauty and the Beast will be the first work-in-progress and the first
animated Disney film to be screened at the New York Film Festival.
The film, about 70% complete, will be shown Sept. 19. "Viewers will
see fully drawn color and animation down to line sketches and everything
in between," says the festival's Wendy Keyes. Adds Disney's Terry Press:
"We discussed it and decided it would be a unique opportunity for people
to see the different stages of animation." The film is scheduled
for release Nov.22.

There's also a story on page 4D on how people and video stores

From the November 22 issue of Video Business:

Walt Disney Home Video, the unquestioned leader in animation sell-through,
is bringing it's live-action library into the arena with a new emphasis and
a new name: Walt Disney's Studio Film Collection.

The first 12 titles in the series will be available Jan. 14 priced at $19.99
each. Among them are "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea," "The Parent Trap,"
"Freaky Friday," and "The Love Bug." Disney officials describe the films as
representing "one of the last great film libraries to be released on video."
Although all 12 in the first group have been on video before, they are all
returning from a five-year moratorium.

The Walt Disney's Studio Film Collection titles will be advertised as
"newly restored, original, full-length theatrical cuts," distinguishing them
from shortened versions that were sometimes shown on Walt Disney television
shows over the years.

The remaining titles are "Old Yeller," "Candleshoe," "The Apple Dumpling
Gang," "In Search Of The Castaways," "Kidnapped," "Treasure Island," and
"The Story Of Robin Hood."

your next video purchase).

I have been DYING for "101 Dalmatians" to come out on video...!

A few notes...

"Fun and Fancy Free" consisted of two featurettes, "Mickey and the Beanstalk"
and "Bongo", both of which are currently available as separate videos.

"The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" consisted of two featurettes, "The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "The Wind in the Willows", both of which are
currently available as separate videos.

"The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" was released as a collection of
featurettes featuring Pooh Bear and company, and included "Winnie the Pooh and
the Blustery Day", "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree", and "Winnie the Pooh
and a Day for Eeyore". Each of these are available separately on video.

"Saludos Amigos", "Make Mine Music", and "Melody Time" were all 'anthology'
features, meaning they were made up of separate stories with (sometimes) a
common theme. Some of these 'short stories' such as "Peter and the Wolf" and
"The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" (released on video as "Willie the
Singing Whale") are also available separately on video.

I think that should just about cover it...

    re: .95

The video releases discussed in .95 are now available. As the note
says, the suggested retail price is $19.95 per tape but many stores are
offering them at lower prices. For example, Caldor's has them on sale
    this week for $14.99.

There are 12 titles available and the only not mentioned in .95 is "The
    Three Lives of Thomasina".

I bought "The Love Bug" and "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" the other
day and we watched "The Love Bug" last night. What a fun movie!! I
remember seeing it when I was very young and it still held my attention
today (many years later). Yes, some parts are dated and there's some
racial stereotyping, but aside from that, it's an enjoyable, little
movie. I'm glad to have it as part of my video collection. Now, I
just need to set aside some time to watch the adventures of Captain
    Nemo and the Nautilus...

And "The Rocketeer" is coming next week!!

The rumors turned out to be true ! The following is from today's
Wall Street Journal. It is reprinted here without permission :

WALT DISNEY PLANS OCT.30 RELEASE OF ' BEAST ' ON VIDEO
    			by Thomas R. King
Staff Reporter of the Wall Street Journal

BURBANK, Calif. -- Walt Disney Co. will release its hit movie " Beauty
and the Beast, " the highest grossing animated film ever, on
videocassette Oct. 30 for $24.99. It expects the video to break all
    sales records.
The release is part of an amibitious video sales campaign in which
Disney plans to deluge stores with more video titles in one year than
ever before. Fueled by recent record sales of " Fantasia "
videocassettes in the face of recession. Disney executives said there
remains enormous potential for growth among the so-called " sell -
through " tapes as opposed to tapes priced in the $ 100 range for
    rental. " Fantasia, " a sell-through tape, sold 14.2 million
    videocassettes.
Specifically, Disney said it is aiming for more growth in the sales
of what it calls its " non-hit catalog " tapes -- essentially all those
titles except for the blockbuster ones such as " Fantasia " or " Beauty
and the Beast. " The " non-hit " tapes normally are priced at $ 12.99
    to $ 24.99.
" We found that our ' non-hit ' catalog growth more than doubled
our overall growth more than doubled our overall growth rate in 1991, "
said Kelley Avery, vice president of brand marketing at Buena Vista
Home Video, Disney's video distribution arm. Disney said its strategy
will be to use its hits to spur sales of other tapes. It also said it's
working to get retailers to commit more space and merchandising support
for all sell-through tapes. Disney said retailers today only offer
100 % support for the blockbuster titles.
Disney unveiled an aggressive marketing effort to promote all its
1992 video releases, including what it called the largest ever
marketing program for its $ 12.99 video collection. The collection
includes videos such as " Cartoon Classics, " which this summer will
feature the Disney character Goofy. Another $ 12.99 video will be a
new installment, available June 19, in its " Sing-Along Songs " series
which will include some clips from " Beauty and the Beast. "
In addition, the company said it struck a promotional tie-in with
Coca Cola Co. in which consumers who buy those videos will recieve
certificates for free soda. Some of the animated movies that will be
promoted with direct mail and television advertising include " The
Great Mouse Detective " and " The Rescuers. "
" Beauty and the Beast " has already taken in more than $ 125
million at the box office and Bill Mechanic, president of the
international theatrical and world-wide video at Walt Disney,
estimates that the film could gross another $ 10 million to $ 20
million in theaters domestically. The videocassette version of the
movie will be on sale for a limited 100-day period and various
versions will be offered, including a gift set that will likely
include some " Beauty and the Beast " memorabilia.
" This we believe will go so far beyond ' Fantasia, ' " Mr.
Mechanic said. He didn't give a specific sales goal.

    	----------------------- 30 --------------------------

So " Beauty and the Beast " on sale as of October 30th. I have to
admit that 100-day sale window thing is an interesting wrinkle. But --
given that " Fantasia " was only supposed to be on sale for 100 days
and yet those 100 days are long past and it's still quite easy to find
a copy of " Fantasia " on sale in stores here in the US -- I percieve
this as more bluff than threat.
But what really intrigued me was the announcement of the pending
video release of " The Great Mouse Detective " and " The Rescuers. "
" Mouse Detective, " I can understand. It's in theaters now all over
the US. Following Disney's typical movie-theater-to-video-release
formula, that'll available on video sometime later this summer.
But " The Rescuers " ?! Not " The Rescuers Down Under, " mind
you, but the * original * " Rescuers " -- being released straight to
video, without a theatrical re-release beforehand. Given that -- not
too many years ago -- " The Rescuers " was Disney's top grossing
animated film ( On its initial release, anywho ), this move is highly
    unusual to say the least.
But -- given that " Pinocchio " ( The first Disney animated film
ever to be released on video ) is returning to theaters this summer
for a theatrical release .... I guess anything is possible.
Finally, I have to admit I'm intrigued by that mention of various
different version of " Beauty and the Beast " being released on video.
I wonder if Disney will dare to include the work-in-progress version
that was shown at the New York Film Festival earlier this year ?

    My comments??

    YEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!

This'll be a great year for Disney video with "101 Dalmatians", due any
day now, and "The Great Mouse Detective", "The Rescuers", and most of
all, "Beauty and the Beast". Wow!! Next thing you know someone will
be saying that "Snow White" is on its way too...

It is odd that "The Rescuers" is coming out on video before another
theatrical release, but it was in theatres about 3 or 4 years ago.
Maybe they figured it was too close for a re-release (or is it a re-re-
    re-release??).

Also, the article talked of their non-'hit' titles on video. Anyone
know exactly which or what kind of films they're referring to?? Could
it be the films recently released under the Walt Disney Studio
    Collection banner?? Just curious.

While browsing through the Disney Store at Quincy Market in Boston this
past weekend I found copies of the LITTLE MERMAID for sale! These were
new copies (not previously viewed) still in their original packaging.
My wife and my sister-in-law have been scouring the stores for this for
monthes and we never expected to find any left. The only place we had
heard that had copies in the past 6 monthes was the AMES store in
Nashau that was going out of business. They had gotten a shipment of
good from a previous store that had closed. Unfortunately they were
    gone in no time.

We scoffed up two copies while we were there but there were still quite
a few left on the shelf. Don't know if they had more than what was on
the shelf or if that was the last of them.

We rented the video over the weekend. There are only two songs from Beauty
on it: Be Our Guest and Beauty and the Beast (when they danced during
dinner). All of the other songs are from other animated classics:
Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed
not only listening to the B&tB songs, but seeing the animation, too.
Seeing the animation on a 27-inch TV is NOT the same, especially the
sweeping effect of the chandelier during the dancing scene... but I
    didn't expect it to be.

DAVID,

Since most of the Disney Stores carry the videos, it may be worth a shot to
call one of them directly and request the PAL versions that you are seeking.
I would assume they have a direct line to all Disney merchandise and you
could probably order them direct and have them sent to you.

I called the Disney store here in Burlington, MA for you and asked who you would
need to contact/order through. The woman gave me an address that you can write
to for the Disney Stores in England. They should be able to provide you with
the information, current releases, etc that you need.

Good luck.

The address is:

    re: .123

    Well, yes and no.

The BatB video is heading into "moratorium" limbo in March/April. What
that means is that Disney will no longer be taking orders for the video
so they won't be making anymore. However, they'll still be available
in stores until the stores run out of their current supply.

Disney is no longer making "Fantasia" videos but they're still readily
    available in most video stores.

However, "The Little Mermaid", "Lady and the Tramp", "Bambi",
"Cinderella", etc. are no longer available because the supplies are all
    dried up.

So the long and the short of it is that you don't need to panic if you
don't have these videos yet, but you should consider buying them soon
if you want them. For that matter, what's taken you so long in the
    first place!!!!! :-)

I bought "The Muppet Movie" over the weekend and in the package was a
little pamphlet describing other releases from Jim Henson Video and
Buena Vista Home Video. One part reads:

"On April 30, Disney stops taking orders on five of Disney's most
    beloved Classics!"

    And the titles shown are:

    	"Beauty and the Beast"
    	"101 Dalmatians"
    	"The Great Mouse Detective"
    	"The Rescuers"
    	"The Rescuers Down Under"

I'm surprised that "The Great Mouse Detective" and "The Rescuers" are
being "retired" so soon because they've been out less than a year. I'm
not worried though because I have all these...

But if you don't have them and want them, it'd probably be wise to
start saving your pennies and making a couple of purchases because once
they're gone, they're gone... well, at least 'til the next theatrical
release and subsequent video re-release... :-)

Around Christmas time I was in the Disney store in PLM looking for some
videos and asked one of the cast what happens when Disney decides to
stop selling a video. He said that they have to pull them off the

members are very helpful if you don't know the exact name of what you
want but can describe it. They may even have a video of MGM by now,

Just call (407)363-6200 with a major credit card and they will be sent

There is a new video available at the Disney store, titled "WDW
Vacation Planner". Co-sponsored by Delta airlines, this 45 minute tape
gives a quick tour of all three major theme parks plus Typhoon Lagoon
and Pleasure Island. Each attraction then has real guests comment on
it. (Unfortunately no names are given. Were any of you noters
interviewed on camera while you were there?) There is also a peek at
all the on-property resorts. At the very end is a recommendation about
how to plan your trip, which is a very condensed version of this file.

This tape is aimed at the first-time Disney visitor, but can also be
used as a quick -itis cure (I've watched it four times since Saturday).

During our stay at Port Orleans at Christmas 1991 we came upon a
movie crew filming in the courtyard formed by buildings 4, 5, and 6.
There were a group of people dressed in winter sweaters, hats, and scarves
gathered around a small fire (it was 80 degrees or more out - these people
were sweltering). Ever since that time, I have been on the lookout for
that scene in ads, videos, etc. I finally found it!

Disney has a new video (available only in the parks) called "The Magic
of Christmas at Walt Disney World". Lasting 25 minutes, it is Santa
Claus answering a letter describing what it is like at WDW at
Christmas. Included are the Jolly Hollydays dinner show, pageants in
Disney Village and the theme parks, the winter version of the Country
Bears Jamboree, and decorations and other events in the theme parks and
hotels. It really brought back the feeling of being at WDW for
Christmas. Cost is $19.95, and it can be ordered by telephone using a
    credit card for payment.

By the way, the final version of the scene we witnessed included B'rer
Bear, B'rer Fox, and a jester in with the people at the fire at PO.

    By STUART ELLIOTT
    c.1994 N.Y. Times News Service
Listen carefully to that sound wafting through the San Francisco
office of Hal Riney & Partners. Is it employees singing, ``Heigh-ho,
heigh-ho, it's off to work we go?''
OK, so maybe the hallways aren't alive with the sound of music. But
certainly the arrival of an assignment from the Walt Disney Co. to
promote the long-awaited release on home video of its classic animated film
``Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' is being ebulliently greeted there.
``From now on, it's Happy, Sneezy, Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Bashful,
Dopey and Riney,'' David Verklin, executive vice president and managing
director of the office, wrote in a staff memo. ``Let's get whistling.''
The assignment from Buena Vista Home Video, a Disney marketing,
sales and distribution subsidiary, is Riney's first foray into Hollywood
entertainment. It was initially reported in a trade newsletter,
The Delaney Report, which estimated billings at $10 million to $15
    million.
It is the most recent in a skein of new business that Riney has
enjoyed since Jan. 1, with estimated total billings of $88 million to $113
million - more than offsetting the loss of the Good Guys Inc. retail
electronics chain, with estimated billings of $10 million. Among the other
accounts the agency has landed are First Interstate Bancorp, Sun-Maid
Growers, Clinique and, at Riney's Chicago office, the Bally's Health and
    Tennis Corp.
``We're feeling pretty good,'' Verklin said in a telephone
interview. ``We've had a hell of a last 90 days.''
Riney has ``passed through the Ayer barrier,'' he added, referring
to months of uncertainty generated by protracted negotiations to merge the
agency with Ayer Inc. in New York. Those discussions were called off
early in February by Riney, the chairman and chief executive, who ultimately
decided that the agency should remain independent.
       ``After a difficult time, I feel we've passed a torch to a next
generation,'' Verklin said, ``and the formula seems to be working.'' In
addition to Verklin, who was promoted to managing director in October,
those who will ``take this company wherever it goes'' include Joe
O'Neill, executive vice president and national creative director.
Riney was awarded the ``Snow White'' assignment amid a review that
is being conducted by Buena Vista Home Video for the creative portion of
its entire account, previously unassigned, with billings estimated at $60
million. Six West Coast shops are taking part; Advertising Age
    identified them as Riney; Gardner, Geary, Coll & Young in San Francisco;
Goldberg Moser O'Neill in San Francisco; Ground Zero in the Venice area of
Los Angeles; Stein Robaire Helm in Los Angeles, and Vitro Robertson Stone
    in San Diego.
Verklin declared that the assignment in no way foreshadowed the
outcome of the review. ``It was really clear they are very separate,'' he
    said.
Since Riney is only beginning the assignment, Verklin said, it is
too early to discuss strategy. He did indicate, though, that the
videocassette ``has to be marketed differently'' from the tape versions of
Disney's newest animated features, ``Aladdin'' and ``Beauty and the Beast,''
which set records in selling 24 million copies and 22 million copies.
``Snow White' is a little bit of American history,'' Verklin said,
noting that it was Hollywood's first full-length animated feature and
the film that established the Disney studio, which risked everything to
    make it.
``Mickey Mouse and Snow White are, in a sense, the Disney brand,''
Verklin said. ``They define the company in the way the Macintosh
defines Apple Computer and baby products define Johnson & Johnson.'' And
Riney, he said, ``is an agency associated with an ability to tout America on
uniquely American brands,'' like Saturn, the General Motors line of
    import-fighting automobiles.
Tania Steele, vice president for publicity and marketing at Buena
Vista Home Video in Burbank, Calif., referred questions about Riney's work
on ``Snow White'' to the agency.
Buena Vista has not disclosed details of the ``Snow White'' release
other than it will go on sale sometime in the fall for the holiday
shopping season. It is likely to be priced at $24.99, as are most
Disney videotapes, though retailers will probably discount it to $16.99 or
    therebouts.
Disney's decision to release ``Snow White'' on tape, announced at
its annual meeting on Feb. 22, was surprising because executives had
declared that they would never release the company's crown jewel as a
videocassette. Many journalists who write about home video speculated
that the announcement was intended to draw attention from the fiasco of Euro
Disney, the company's French theme park. But Disney executives said
their experiences with re-releasing animated classics like ``Pinocchio'' in
theaters convinced them a home-video version of ``Snow White'' would
    not diminish its value.
``Snow White'' has been re-released in theaters eight or nine times
since its premiere at Radio City Music Hall in December 1937. The most
recent came last year, when it took in around $50 million at the box
office - not bad for a movie made during Franklin D. Roosevelt's second
    term.

CLEVELAND, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Finast Supermarkets today announced the
availability of "Return of Jafar," produced exclusively by Walt Disney for
home video, at all Finast Stores for $15.47.
Considered the sequel to "Aladdin," the popular box office smash, Walt
Disney's video features five new songs, a thundering waterfall, a fiery
lava pit, and "a certain street rat," along with Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie,
Abu and the Magic Carpet.
Noted Bill Clarke, Vice-President of Non Foods for Finast Supermarkets,
"I feel this video will outperform 'Aladdin,' the number one selling home
video of all time with over 24 million copies sold. Given the popularity
of family oriented videos, we expect 'The Return of Jafar' to be a runaway
success. It's unprecedented for Walt Disney to distribute a movie solely
to supermarkets and other retailers, but that's clearly where the market
growth is. Regular theaters will not be able to feature this movie."
Sales of home videos grew 17% in 1993 and reached 4.4 billion dollars
with over 73 million videos sold. Sales of videos are expected to reach 9
billion dollars by the year two thousand. Each "Return of Jafar" video
at Finast contains a Pillsbury refund offer worth $5.00.
Finast operates 40 Finast Supermarkets in Northeastern Ohio.

  BURBANK, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 19, 1994--In just two days 1.5
million copies of Disney's first direct-to-video production, ``The Return
of Jafar,'' have already sold-through to consumers.
These numbers are reported even before the video's first weekend at
retail, which will begin Friday, May 20.
According to Ann Daly, president Buena Vista Home Video, ``In just two
days `The Return of Jafar' sales are tracking well ahead of `Pinnochio' at
the same time, and just ahead of `The Fox and the Hound' in its first days
of sale. At this rate, we expect this to be one of the top-selling
videocassettes of the year. It certainly sets a record for the
made-for-video category.''
``The Return of Jafar,'' Disney's first made-for-video movie, offers
consumers up to $10 back with additional purchases of Pillsbury and Mattel
products. An all-new ``Aladdin''-inspired adventure, it features the
original ``Aladdin'' characters, including the Genie, Jasmine, Aladdin,
Iago and Jafar.
``The Return of Jafar'' is the flagship release of Disney's new ``Walt
Disney Home Video Presents'' banner. The new line will feature more
originally produced video movies based on popular Disney characters.

By PETER M. NICHOLS
c.1994 N.Y. Times News Service
Friday, May 20, there will be something new on the shelves in video
stores: a major animated feature from Disney that did not play in theaters
but instead has gone, if purists will forgive the expression, straight to
video.
The film, ``The Return of Jafar,'' is promoted as a sequel to the Disney
blockbuster ``Aladdin.'' In the video industry, its release sends a signal
that a lowly order of film making is about to stage an uprising.
Of all the scorn heaped on movies, few pejoratives curl the lip like
``straight to video,'' a term suggestive of exploitative fodder churned
out quickly at a low cost. ``It usually means the product didn't make the
cut for theatrical distribution,'' said Ann Daly, the president of Buena
Vista, Disney's video-distribution company.
The maker of one smash hit after another in movie theaters, Disney
doesn't worry about making cuts. Never intended for theaters, ``The Return
of Jafar'' is a television product, spun off from a new Disney series to
be broadcast this fall. Disney won't divulge figures, but production costs
for television animation are a small fraction of what they are for the big
screen.
Comparisons aside, the tape represents a new class of revenue-producer
that tucks neatly beneath big Disney theater films like ``Beauty and the
Beast'' and ``Aladdin,'' and possibly the forthcoming ``Lion King,'' which
are distributed on home video only for short periods and then withdrawn
for years to rebuild demand. (Dealer orders for ``Aladdin'' were cut off
on April 30.)
``The Return of Jafar'' will always be available, Disney says. Ms. Daly
said she expected a sale of ``several million right out of the gate,'' a
pittance next to figures for ``Aladdin,'' which has sold more than 20
million copies, but that is certainly respectable for a sales title.
                               *  *  *
                          REMOVING A STIGMA
With the stigma of ``straight to video'' not likely to rub off on
Disney, the rest of the industry hopes Disney will rub off on ``straight
to video.'' ``Disney is the brand name; they help expand credibility,''
said Marty Jorgensen, the president of Monarch Home Video, a Nashville
distributor of movies that usually open in video stores.
As if on Disney's cue, other studios are planning low-cost
straight-to-video sequels of nonanimated feature films. Later this year
MCA/Universal plans to release ``Darkman: Durant Returns,'' a
straight-to-video sequel to the 1990 thriller starring Liam Neeson, which
was a big video renter. The sequel is also made for the rental market, as
opposed to ``Jafar,'' which at $22.99 is priced to sell. Rental titles are
easier and less expensive to promote, distributors say.
``We encouraged MCA years ago to make a `Darkman' sequel,'' said Ron
Castell, a senior vice president of Blockbuster. He said the film was
among many worth a video sequel, if not a high-cost theatrical one.
``We've always believed studios could wring a lot of extra dollars out of
their libraries,'' he said.
``Of course, you won't get the same star lineup,'' he added. Mr. Neeson,
lately the star of ``Schindler's List,'' will not be in the sequel (Arnold
Vosloo has the part), just as the voice of Robin Williams as the Genie is
replaced by that of Dan Castellaneta in ``The Return of Jafar.''

Mike, the article mentioned that the Genie appears in the movie "Return of
Jafar." Does Robin Williams do the voice of Genie again? The reason I ask
is because I thought he had had a falling out with Disney after doing Aladdin
and that he refused to work with them again.

Saw it this weekend, well pieces of it at least. Dan Castellaneta
does a Robin Williams impersonation the whole time. Doesn't sound at
all like Homer. The kids review was slow at first but with a good
ending! The animation was good the voices OK and the story not as good
as Alladin. All in all, I think it's clear that this tape was released
strictly to make money, but if the kids enjoy it, who cares right?

I bought my "Snow White" at BJ's on Wednesday ($15.99 - not a bad
price) and watched it last night. It had probably been 35 years since
I had seen the whole thing. What a nice children's movie! I do now
understand, though, why, as a preschooler, my father had to take me
out of the theatre during the forest scenes. The monsters Snow White
    saw were very scary!

The introduction includes scenes from the upcoming Pocahontas.
Scheduled for Summer 1995 release, it looks like it will be another hit
    for Disney.

Over 20 million copies have been sold and The Walt Disney Company has

remaining copies for sale as Walt Disney is no longer manufacturing
"Snow White" videocassettes and has shipped all inventories.

I just picked up a copy of The Lion King sing-along video. The title is
a bit misleading -- only two songs, "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" and
"Circle of Life" are from The Lion King -- but I enjoyed it just to see
those two parts of the movie again.

The best part of the entire video was the preview of Pocahontas. Some
of it is duplication of the preview on the Snow White video. The
artwork, of course, has progressed in the past several months, so there
are a couple actual scenes from the upcoming movie. Looks like it will
    be another hit for Disney.

I saw in the Boston Globe the other day that "The Aristocats" is finally being
released on video in April 1995 (yay!!!!). It was last released in theatres in
1987.

I asked a Disney Store cast member (Nashua, NH) about "The Aristocats" release
a few weeks ago, and she said at the time that Disney had decided not to release
it as originally planned (don't know what the original date was), I think because
of film quality issues. I'm not quite sure what the story is. Anyway, I'm glad
to hear that it's finally coming out on video!!

The two systems are not compatible for playback purposes - something to
do with the number of lines on the screen (perhaps someone more
    knowledgeable can explain.

Having said that, some VCRs have the capability to play both formats

    CHRISTMAS BELLE IN PRODUCTION

Walt Disney Animation Canada, Inc., temporarily located in both Toronto,
Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia (permanent locations will be
announced shortly), is in pre-production on its first
direct-to-international home video project, "Beauty and the

"Beauty and the Beast: Christmas Belle" tells the story of Belle's

the Christmas spirit to the gloomy despair of the Beast and other
inhabitants of the castle, Belle is thwarted by court composer Forte, who
