    Walt Disney World

There are currently two guide books out on Walt Disney World. Steve
Birnbaum's Official Guide to Walt Disney World put out by Houghton
Mifflin Co. and is available through the Magic Kingdom Club, (of which
I highly recommend) is an excelent book for the first time visitor who
is planning on staying on site. The book has details on the various
resorts and what one can do as well as the parks and is laid out rather
well and is easy to read. The other book is titled Unofficial Guide to
Walt Disney World and Epcot by Sehlinger and Finley and is put out by
Prentice-Hall. This is also and good book to have but deals mostly
about the parks and very little info on the rest of WDW, and so is
better for those staying off site. It has rating of the atractions
etc. Both books help you plan your stay and give tips on what to see
as well as to how to see them. Of course both books are good for the
    repeat visitor as well.

    Disneyland

Currently I've only seen Steve BirnBaum's book on Disneyland. I don't
own one but based on the WDW book, I would recommend this to those who
are going to Disneyland for the first time.

    Tokyo Disneyland

I haven't seen any quide on this.

    re: 17.1

I have the current versions of both of these books.

The Unofficial Guide had an interesting section on the reasoning
behind the traffic patterns. (Both books have the same list of
busy days although they are in a slightly different order.)

One thing in the Unofficial Guide that I haven't been able to
confirm is the pricing for the studio. It states that the Magic
Kingdom/EPCOT Center ticket will also be good at the studio.
The Disney folks (at least the ones we can get to thru their
various phone numbers) do NOT know if the ticket will be combined
with the Magic Kingdom/EPCOT Center or if it will be separate.

If anyone hears for sure, please post a note here. I'll be calling
them again around the middle of April. Hopefully, they'll have
    updated prices by then.

I seem to remeber reading about this in one of the issues of the Disney
News as well. Typhoon Lagoon and Pleasure Island will be seperate
    thought.

Well since I was out today, I stoped off a book store to see if I could
pick up the lates Star Trek The Next Generation paperback, but they
hadn't arrived yet, so while I broused around the new release section I
happened upon the following book on Disney Trivia tittle 'The Official
Disney trivia Book' by Bill Ginch and Fred Miranda put out by
PaperJacks books (published December '88) for $3.95, done in
cooperation with Disney (note the word official in the title). Trivia
    topics cove the following

Disney's Animated Classics - up to the Great Mouse Detective
        Disney on Television
        Disney's Live-action Feature Films

the deadline for the Summer issue which came out in June, it can seem
like a long time until your subscription starts. The fall issue is due
out in September. If you don't see anything next month, I would send

    (0101) 303 447 9330

I called them recently and quoted the number of my 'flexible-fiend'
(I used Visa ... Barclaycard in Brit-speak). The lady was very
helpful, and once we'd gotten over the confusion of how to spell
Pamber Heath (my home village), I was enrolled.

Not sure when to expect the first issue, but I'll be looking at
my Barclaycard bills to see when they take the 30 dollar's worth
    out.

Please could anyone let me know when the next issue is due out?

    Andy, Richard,

The Disney News is published quarterly. The last issue was the Winter
1990 edition, and came out in the US at the end of December. The next
issue should be out around the end of March. If you add a couple of
weeks mailing delay to reach the UK, you probably won't see anything
    until early April.

Think of it as the equivalent of waiting in line at Disney World.

    Sorry.

17.27New Mag. for Kids, "Disney Adventures"INDWLD::GOLDBERGLen GoldbergMon Oct 08 1990 19:5580

Subject: Disney starting kids magazine

UPI Regional Business Newsfeature

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Co., which has made a major
commitment to new businesses in recent years, is starting up another
with a magazine for children between 7 and 14.
The digest-sized monthly publication, Disney Adventures, is to hit
newstands on Oct. 9 at a price of $1.95. Disney is hoping for initial
sales of 350,000.
``We've found that by the age of 10, nearly all children are buying
things on their own at least twice a week,'' said publisher Randy Achee,
a 17-year veteran of the magazine industry. ``We see supermarkets,
convenience stores and newstands as premier locations.''
Disney Adventures is partly modeled after an Italian version of the
Disney magazine, Topolino, which sells 700,000 copies a week and is the
third best-seller among that nation's periodicals.
The magazine, which has been heavily promoted through Kellogg's
cereals and on Disney's two-hour slate of afternoon cartoon shows,
follows in the footsteps of a wide variety of new initiatives by the
company in recent years.
They include the founding of a new film division to produce
mainstream movies (Touchstone), starting its own cable channel (the
Disney Channel), opening a movie theme park in Florida (MGM Studios) and
starting a chain of retail stores (Disney Stores).
In the past year, Disney has also started its own record label
(Hollywood Records) and opened its first fast-food outlet (Mickey's
Kitchen). Disney executives and retail analysts have stressed that the
diversification effort makes sense because it supports a strong cross-
marketing effort.
Retail consultant Frederick Marx of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., believes
Disney Adventures will succeed, just based on the success of the
company's previous new ventures.
``Everything Disney has developed in past decade has been a home run,
'' Marx said. ``Without a doubt, they have the best sensitivity and
research of the marketplace.''
The Disney Stores, with their costumed employees and movie sets with
Mickey Mouse in each of the 70 stores, are a good example of finding a
niche and exploiting it, Marx said.
``The stores are brilliant because there's nothing really like them,''
Marx said. ``What Disney has done is find these huge pockets that are
unfilled.''
Indeed, Achee said, the size of the magazine alone sets it apart.
``Kids have told us that they want something smaller than a regular
magazine that they can easily carry with them,'' he said.
The magazine is also printed on heavy stock so children can write in
it. As for its content, the idea is to offer something for everyone.
``Our core group is the kids from 8 to 12, but we are hoping that
with the wide mix we have, the older and younger kids will find
something that will pull them in and get them reading the rest of it,''
Achee said.
About a third of the magazine will consist of comics, and the rest
will contain short features on sports, fashion, games, science and real
life heroes. The first issue includes articles about film star Rick
Moranis, baseball caps, sports scoreboards, how kids get parts in
movies, a trek through Siberia and the story of Halloween.
``We want the magazine to feel a bit like a Disney ride,'' Achee
said. ``It's fun and colorful, but you learn something too. Literacy is
a big issue for us.''
Achee is supervising a 45-person staff at Disney headquarters in
Burbank, Calif. The long-term plans call for going to twice a month
publication in April.
The magazine is also aimed at parents, who have memories of growing
up at a time when comics were not as violent as they are today, Achee
noted. ``We're hopeful that parents will want to read it to their kids,''
he said.
Marx said that Disney has been able to succeed because it manages to
walk a fine line between commercialism and social responsibility.
``There's clearly a void in the area of kids' magazines,'' Marx said.
``Parents have probably been Nintendoed to death and kids will like it
because it's high quality without being too goody-goody.''
``What it comes down to is that Disney has never gone the carney
route,'' Marx said. ``Consumers recognize that and are willing to pay
for it.''

We have a preview issue of Disney Adventures. They
were handing them out when we went to see the Disney Afternoon
Caravan at a mall about six weeks ago.

The magazine is kind of cute, but a little too old for my kids,
ages 5, 5, and 2. I think anyone in the target age group would
enjoy it. Especially if they like the Disney Afternoon. It is
about 2/3 comics from the four Disney Afternoon shows, and the
rest is very short articles on various "kid-type" topics.

The book itself is the size of Readers' Digest, and I would guess
about 80 full color pages. If I remember, the subscription price
was about $11.95/year. If anyone is interested, I'll bring in the
subscription card, and post the address and exact price.

Thank-you Richard for proving to me that the letters in Disney News

Just received a postcard from Disney Adventures. The subscription
rate they quote for the UK is $36.95 for one year. Is it still a
monthly publication? There was some talk of it coming out every
    two weeks.

The subscription address is the Mt. Morris, Illinois one that I
    gave a few notes back.

I might give it a go while the exchange rate is still good.

I would like to know if there are any books for WDW comparable to
the ones they put out for Disneyland.

I'm talking about nice coffee table books like "Disneyland, the inside
story" and the one they put out for the 35th anniversary.

It doesn't look as if I'm going to be able to make it to Florida any

Actually, you should wait a few months, L.J. Walt Disney
World celebrates its official 20th anniversary this October. Chances
are there'll be a slick coffee table book quite similiar to your
" Disneyland : The Inside Story " available for purchase by the time
the resort's anniversary rolls around. I heard rumors one was in the
works last October at a Disneyana convention I attended.

While at the Mall bookstore this weekend I broused through this book.
It's put out by Prima press and the authors name is Kim Wright Wiley.
I didn't buy it since my boy is now 12 and I'd rather wait for "Walt
    Disney World with Teenagers" ;^).

From what I did see, it covered the basics for traveling to WDW with
kids, what hotels to stay, what ride to see/stay away from, mentions
the bright lights (taking of the cars picture) at the end of Journey
Into Imagination ride, to what restaurants to eat at vs which ones to
save for when they are being babysat.

Look's like it would be a good companion book to the Birmbaum guide.

And now for something a little different...

Over the weekend I picked up a used paperback book:

        The Walt Disney story of
                  Our Friend the Atom

           by Heinz Haber, Ph.D.
               Chief Science Consultant
               Walt Disney Productions

Published in 1956 by Dell Publishing.

The book presents a brief history of chemistry, about an 8th or 9th
grade explanation of nuclear physics, and mixes it in with a fable
about a fisherman and a genie.

Here's a bit of the forward, written by Walt himself:

"Fiction often has a strange way of becoming fact. Not long ago,
we produced a motion picture based on the immortal tale, 'Twenty
Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,' featuring the famous submarine
Nautilus. According to that story the craft was powered by a
          magic force."
            .
            .
            .
"The atom is our future. It is a subject everyone wants to
understand, and so we logn had plans to tell the story of the
atom. In fact, we considered it so important that we embarked on
          several atomic projects."

"For one, we are planning to build a Hall of Science in the
Tomorrowland section of Disneyland where we will--among other
things--put up an exhibit of atomic energy. Then, our atomic
projects at the Walt Disney Studios were two-fold: we produced
a motion picture and this book, so that we could tell you this
important story in full detail. Both grew together. Many
illustrations appear in both, and we gave them the same title:
          'Our Friend the Atom.'"

"With our atomic projects we found ourselves deep in the field
of nuclear physics. Of course, we don't pretend to be scientists--
we are story tellers. But we combine the tools of our trade with
the knowledge of experts. We even created a new Science
Department at the Studio to handle projects of this kind."
           .
           .
           .

"... our book tries to make it clear to you that we can indeed
look upon the atom as our friend."

I'm looking for information about a newsletter called "Walt Disney
World News". It's the newsletter they leave in the rooms at the
resorts. It contains articles/ads about the various happenings
at the WDW resort, the operating hours and the ticket prices. It
seems to be published quarterly but the edition I am looking at
is the Holiday Issue (listing the events/hours for December 1990).

I am interested in getting a copy of the 1991 Holiday Issue when
it's published but I think it would be handy to get the publication
regularly. Have any of you tried to get copies of these? Any
idea as to when the Holiday Issue might be available?

    "Insider's Guide" published 3 or 4 times a year?

CLaude and I were comparing notes on this today.

He made reservations in Feb. for next April and a few weeks later he
received a copy of the Winter Guide (blue cover).

I made reservations in June for next July and I received a copy of the
Summer Guide plus an Insider's Guide (both yellow covers).

We received these about a month after making our reservations however
CLaude never got a Summer issue. I don't expect to get a Fall issue but
I'd like to continue to receive them to keep up with the latest info.

The Insider's Guide contains updates on admission prices, dinner show
prices, and other bits of information. Claude noticed a difference
between the Winter issue he got and my Summer issue.

We both are wondering if there is a way to get on some mailing list to
receive these two guides. There doesn't seem to be any info regarding a
    subscription either.

The Insider Guide contains "exclusive information for Disney Resort

This little guide is pretty snazzy and is in color. It cintains the
latest map and has the following information:

           o Guaranteed Theme Park Access
           o Complimentary Transportation

           o A World of Shopping
           o Telephone Directory

The guide contains information many of us normally wouldn't be aware of
like the Magic Years Club. Membership is for guests 60 years or older
and it gives you discounts on a number of things ($30).

How about this do you know you can send floral or fruit arrangements
anywhere on the property between 8 A.M. and 10 P.M.?

Also included with the guide was an "Admission Fact Sheet" This has the

17.58Improved 1992 Unofficial GuideCIVIC::GIBSONWed Jan 29 1992 11:5949
The 1992 edition of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is
now in the bookstores. I picked up a copy last night. The price has
gone up to $11 this year but with good reason: Everything has been
rewritten and several new features and touring plans have been added.
The 1991 edition was 315 pages, the 1992 edition is 418 pages.

One new feature which will be helpful to parents of small children is
the Small Child Fright Potential chart. It lists all rides and
attractions in each park, with comments of what about that attraction
might frighten a child. A few examples:

            Jungle Cruise - moderately intense, some macabre sights;
a good test attraction for little ones.

Tom Sawyer Island - Some very small children are intimidated
by dark, walk-through tunnels that can easily be avoided.

Swiss Family Treehouse - Not frightening in any respect

The new listing of tour plans for the MK:

Magic Kingdom One-Day Touring Plan for Adults

Author's Selective One-Day Touring Plan for Adults

Magic Kingdom One-Day Touring Plan for Parents with Small
            Children

Magic Kingdom Dumbo-or-Die-in-a Day Touring Plan for Parents
            with Small Children

Magic Kingdom Two-Day Touring Plan A, for When the Park is
            Open Late

Magic Kingdom Two-Day Touring Plan B, for Morning Touring
and for When the Park Closes Early

The Dumbo-Do-or-Die tour is designed to give small children as perfect
a day in the Magic Kingdom as possible. Before going, a listed
prerequisite for parents is to learn the words to "It's a Small, Small
    World".

For those outside the US who might want to order a copy, the ISBN
number is 0-13-951047-8, and the publisher is Prentice Hall Travel in
    New York.
