399.0. "Cruising Alone?" by ISLNDS::OCONNOR () Tue Oct 27 1992 14:46

Has anyone taken a cruise alone, where the cruise line matches you up
with a roomate? I know it is cheaper then sailing as a single and
booking a cabin for yourself. I have taken a cruise before, and would
like to take another, the problem is all of my friends are land locked
    for vacations.

What were your experiences, good and bad?

    Thanks,

    Joan

    Hi,

I have never cruised alone, so can't answer from that angle, but this
might help. In July 91, 4 of us took a Princess cruise to Alaska. One
of the first nights out they had a "singles night". We all went. There
we met 3 other people who were traveling alone, in our age group. We
ended up spending the rest of the cruise with them. They were a little
apprehensive about going alone, but once they met up with the rest of
us, they were fine and not alone any more. In fact, we still keep in
touch with each other. I'm sure you'll meet people during the week
    to do things with.

Hi Joan,

I have traveled alone on two cruises. The first I was totally by myself
with no roommate. I allowed the cruise line to place me in a cabin right
before boarding (this saved me about $300). I sat with a family at
dinner and struck up a friendship with the parents and two of the younger
kids. While there were singles, and singles parties, I was too tired
the first night and missed out on meeting most of them at the get together.
However, that didn't detract at all. And I'm not really into the night
life anyway.

The second cruise, I hooked up with a group of lawyers from the D.A's
office in Colorado Springs. I didn't know anyone and they placed me
in a room with 3 other ladies. It was just as much fun as the other
cruise, but there was one lady that managed to put a sour note on the
room situation. She was a real pistol when it came to partying and the
rest of us didn't appreciate the lack of consideration. Thats the only
down side to rooming with people you don't know. Sometimes you have
different ideas of fun.

The first cruise was on NCL and the second was on Carnival. I felt much
more at home on the NCL cruise. The Carnival cruise tended to be more for
the party-holic.

I would go again and again by myself. You really won't lack for company
regardless of whether you hook up with a singles group. There'll be
too much to keep you occupied. I found I was too excited and entertained
to worry about doing the cruise alone.

Enjoy!!!!!
