518.0. "RCCL's SOS - Lately?" by GRANPA::LBINGNEAR (LOIS BINGNEAR @DWO) Wed Mar 01 1995 12:22

We are planning a Cruise of RCCL's Sovereign of the Seas departing from
Miami on May 20, '95. In perusing the notes the last trip report I
found was written September '93. Has anyone sailed recently on the SOS?

We have booked the 7-Night Eastern Caribbean tour and was also
wondering if you really have enough time at each port to completely see
the sites and get the full picture of the island? Or do you feel you
spend much of your time just unboarding and boarding the ship?

    Thanks,
    Lois

They list the port times, subtract 1/2 hour at beginning and end
and that is time available. You generally have enough time to
experience the island and get a feel for it. But a typical 8 hour
stop will not let you see everything. If you want to see all
of Puerto Rico or any island then you fly there and stay for a week.

I've sailed on SOS 3 times and enjoyed it. I kept repeating because
it was always cheapest and had most days at sea. I believe they
drop one day at sea and replaced it with a stop at Nassau now,
too bad what a waste. A day at sea is much better than Nassau any time.

My last cruise on SOS was about 2 1/2 years ago.

    Thanks! Harold,

The cruise we're taking has 2 days at sea and like you, I thoroughly
enjoy those days. It gives me time to just chill out and my only
worry is should I have that last drink by the pool before I get dressed
    for dinner.

My husband and I, along with 6 friend have just booked the "SOS" for
the December 30th, New Year's sailing.

This will be our sixth sailing, one of the other couples have cruised
a couple of times and for the other two couples this will be their first.

Questions: Looking for point of views from someone that have cruised
                on New Years.

I know from passed sailings, that in general most men wear
suits for the formal evening but on the New Year's cruise
                would a tux's be more appropriate ?

What about the weather, can I expect the temperature to be
about the same as sailing in March ?

What airline does R. C. general use ?

What if anything special does the cruise lines do for the
                holiday cruises ?

Are ships still decotated from the Christmas Cruise ?

I booked the Cruise through Cruises of Distinction and I THINK we
got a good deal. Book price (and I know never to pay this) was:
What do you Frequent Cruies think?

    BOOK DOLLARS EW PAID
    $2,470. Cabin Category D 1,453.

       110. Port tax 110.

518.6Sounds like pretty good dealMAY30::CULLISONWed Apr 12 1995 15:3819
As said before just about any airline used but you will probably
go on main carriers like Delta. Almost always non stop.

Considering New Years is very prime and category D is a high category
the prices you have sound very good. I used Cruises of Distinction also
last time we went and there prices are usually as good as they get.

I would think with no experience at New Years that either Tuxes or
a nice suit would be fine. If you like to dress up wear a tux, if
not and the cost is an issue then wear a nice suit. Either way you
should be feel fine, I would guess at least 25% to 50% will not have
tuxes. The new years crowd should be younger than normal, with more kids
than normal. Many times ships of this size may have 500 kids on New years
with only 75-100 the week after.

Have fun, which I could go.
