482.0. "Any suggestions for my cruise next month??" by MPGS::LACKOVIC (Colleen Lackovic NUGGET::LACKOVIC SHR1-3/E21) Fri Jan 28 1994 23:06

Hi

I am going on a Carnival cruise on the Tropical leaving Feb 26 1994.
I am going to St Thomas, Guadeloupe, Granada, La Guaira/Caracas, Aruba.
Does anyone have any suggestions of special things to do on the islands
when we port at each one? Which island is best for shopping? What are
the best beach/water sports at each one island (ie: parasailing, snorkeling)
Also, are there any good clubs or restaraunts that are recommended. This
is my first cruise so any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks

Colleen

    Colleen,

I took the same cruise last June(see note 215.3). We had a
wonderful time. As for clubs, you are not in port on any nights so
clubbing is out. Since this was our 1st time to any of these islands
we took the tours offer by Carnivale except on Guadeloupe and Granada.
St. Thomas has the best shopping. Aruba also have good shopping but is
more expensive. If I remember correctly at least one of the tours at
each island offer some type of water sport.

If you have any question let me know,

    Hi,

I have not taken that particular cruise, but I have been to some of the
islands. The best shopping is in St. Thomas - gold, jewelry, perfumes
are all very reasonable. Aruba has wonderful snorkeling; since it is a
coral island, the coral reefs are abundant. There is a tour called
"Mar-Lab" which covers two different areas for snorkeling (one is Baby
Beach) and you can also rent equipment from them. The people that run
the tour are friendly and knowledgeable about the island. I took this
same tour a couple of years ago and it was $30.00, but definately worth
the money! If you are in Aruba for lunch, there is a unique restaurant
in the downtown area called "La Petite Cafe". The meals are served on
a stone and you complete the cooking to your perfection, right at your
table! Aruba is a very friendly island and you won't be disappointed.

I spent one day on the french island of Guadeloupe and enjoyed the
beaches, but be aware that most of them are topless and/or nude
beaches. There was also a communication barrier.

    Hope this helps!

When in Grenada take the short Island tour. it takes about 2.5 hrs.
If you can find him ask for Irwin, he took us to the top of a mountain
a place called Morney Labaya and to a rain forest state park where we
were introduced to raw cocoa beans by a monkey. He also took us to a
roadside store where we met jeanette who sold spice samplers for $2 US.
If you have time there is a bar/restaurant on the carinage above a gift
shop where they make the best rum punch I have ever had. You should
definitly try one, or maybe two but not three because you'll miss your
boat. A great beach out past the Med school near the Rennaisance
    hotel.
