480.0. "After room assignment, can we change?" by POWDML::PETRICCA () Mon Jan 03 1994 17:48

We are going on our first cruise on January 22 - Holland America,
Westerdam. I won the cruise in a AAA Travel Agency Grand Give-away!
All expenses paid except the port charges. My question is this: when I
get the cruise "papers" and find out which room we are assigned, is
there then an option to upgrade or change to another room? My husband
always gets seasick on fishing boats and I have heard that the best
place to be on a cruise ship is in the middle of the boat, the lower
the better. Does anyone know if this is true? And would it be worth
it if I tried to upgrade. I have no idea the difference in costs
    between room levels, etc.

    Thanks.

That is probably the best place for motion but it will not normally
make that much difference especially on a medium size ship like
the Westerdam. Cost is based on location (lowest is cheapest),
inside/outside (inside cheapest) and cabin size. Most larger
cabins are usually on higher decks. If your cabin is far forward then
it probably would cost little or nothing to move to center, then
problem will be availability if anything.

My suggestion would be if you are far forward then maybe consider
swapping to middle but if there is a problem swapping do not worry about it.
The difference is small. You probably will not be near the highest
cabin level because these are typically the most expensive.
The difference overall will not be that great. If weather is bad
enough to make someone seasick then there is a good chance they
will be seasick anywhere on ship.

I would believe the cabin location would be more important on the
    smaller ships.

If your husband does feel ill then make sure he greats dramamine
immediately, don't wait and waste the vacation being sick. Dramamine
usually works quickly, most people I've seen on cruises who got
sick felt fine shortly after taking dramamine. He can also consider
the patch but is does have varying side affects.

If you have any questions just give me a call. I am usually at 223-4150
    or send email.

there are a number of discussions about ship location and sea sickness
spread out through out this conference.

The ship will probably have meclizine available for free; the Rotterdam,
another Holland America ship, did when we went on an Alaskan cruise on it a few
years ago. Just ask at the purser's office.

I think Dramamine is a brand name; I expect it contains meclizine. In any
case, my S.O. and I have found meclizine to be very effective at preventing
motion sickness. It works for helicopter rides, too! :-)

I have just returned from a Xmas and New Year cruise in the Med.
The Bay of Biscay was extremely rough and one in three people were
sea sick. Most of them took an injection which knocks you out for
24 hours, however it does seem to be the best cure.

My cabin was in the middle of the ship and to be quite honest it didn't
make that much difference, luckily neither myself or my husband were
    ill.

We also got an upgrade and were notified of it 1 week before sailing.
