460.0. "12-night Meditteranean Cruise/SUN VIKING" by ISLNDS::FAUST_CLANCY ("In God We Trust, Others Pay Cash") Thu Aug 05 1993 19:10

    12-Day Mediterranean Cruise/SUNVIKING

I am very close to signing on for a 12 night Mediterrannean Cruise
at the end of October 93, RCCL's Sun Viking. The itinerary calls
for a 2-night pre-cruise land package in Athens at a hotel near
the Acropolis and then embarking from Athens, Ephesus (Turkey), Rhodes,
Patmos, Mikonos, Iraklion, Olympia, Naples, Rome, and ending in Genoa.

Even though this cruise has been advertising in the Sunday Boston
Globe for as low as $2,044 (including air) YES INCLUDING AIR TO EUROPE,
the cheapest I could get was $2,144 (not including the land package,
port charges or taxes) from Cruise Doctors in NH. I called Thomas
Cook, hoping (against hope) that since they are a world-reknown
extremely large cruise agent, they would provide the cheapest rates,
but they came in at $2,344 per person. When informed I could get it
for $300 per person less, they informed me that they have a policy
of MATCHING what any other agent can give you.....which of course is
good for me, because I can deal with them on the dtn and have my
tickets delivered to my door. But this seems to rob the other cruise
agents who have done all the leg work. I am not too happy with Thomas
cook, so far as an admin within the company, they have not given the
same service as American Express. Even tho we complained about the
prices of American Express, they stood on their heads to please us...
    Thomas Cook does NOT.

A kind vax-notes reader is sending me an RCCL free two-category upgrade
coupon, and that will help on this booking.

I would love to hear from people who have ever been to the cities I
plan to visit, or have cruised the Sun Viking, or who can better the
price I have listed above for an Oct 27 sailing....

    Any comments appreciated!

    Debra

Usually the lowest prices advertised many times apply to only a few
or even one date only. Because it is getting late in the season and
generally the cruise market is doing much better this year, you
may not have much luck in getting a better deal. Usually the lowest
price requires maximum flexibility in dates.

I my self would not go to another agent who just matches a price. That
is easy for them to do and as you said they didn't do the work.
I would assume that Cruise Doctors would probably send your cruise
documents by mail and if necessary Federal express. You should not
have to get them your self. My cruise last year was done with an
agent in Conn, RCCL sent the documents to them late, so they sent
them to me Federal Express overnight. The agent I am using this
year in NJ does the same thing, if documents are received early enough
they mail and if later Fed Ex. There seems to be a lot of noters
who have had good luck with Cruise Doctors.

One of your other notes references the 11 night cruises in Caribbean,
you can probably get a cheaper cruise for one of these versus Europe.
Of course it is not Europe. If you looked into them I have a coupon for
    3 cat upgrade for

Song of AMerica but only for 11/14 12/5 and 12/15,
2 or 3 category upgrade. It was also good for Song of Norway 10
night transatlantic 11/2 (Europe to Caribbean), and also
	Song of Norway 10 night transcanal, 11/12 11/22 12/2 12/12

It not only SEEMS to rob the other agent of their commission, it DOES!!

This is a hot button for me...or can't you tell? ;-) Any agency which
will take your booking and payment by phone will send you your doc by
mail. (BTW, they may have an 800 number so you wouldn't even have to
    pick up the phone bills.)

If an agent has done a good job for you, they deserve your business.

    Thanks for listening..........
