339.0. "Aerobics on cruise" by LEDDEV::CULLISON () Tue Dec 31 1991 19:23

If you are a die hard aerobics fan and would like to go on a cruise without
missing classes then here is some information that may be helpful. I
recently came back from my seventh cruise. During this last year I
starting doing reasonably regular aerobics. When I went on the cruise
I new that aerobics would probably be offerred a few times during the
week, it always was on previous cruises that I went on. On this cruise
it turned out they offered it every day with an aerobics instructor
whose only job was to give classes in aerobics. It was really great.
They do not have step but had low impact, hi/lo, hi.

This cruise was on the Sovereign of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Cruise
Lines (RCCL). The classes where held in the fitness center which
contained the exercise bikes etc. It had a regular wood floor with
a mirrorred wall. Our cruise had three full days of cruising and
three days that we stopped at islands. On full days at sea there
were two full one hour classes (usually one lo and one hi/lo). there
were also abs classes, wanda band glasses, stretch classes etc (
usually 1/2 hour) also. These classes were held before and after
the aerobics to allow 90 minute classes if you desired. On days
we stopped at ports there was one 60 minute aerobic class plus
usually one other 1/2 hour class. THe cruise staff also put on a few
aerobics classes during the week in one of the lounges.

I went to a bunch of classes mainly to help fight off some of the extra
calories from all the meals I was consuming. The hi/lo and total body
classes were quite intense, since they had abs etc. afterwards most
of the 60 minutes was in aerobics, normal warm up and cool down etc.
Great classes and good instructor. Glasses were not too crowded.

If you really like aerobics and want to go on a cruise then you might
want to try one of the largest ships. The Sovereign has two sister
ships which will have the same program, Monarch of the Seas and
in April the Majesty of the Seas. On the smaller ships the fitness
center is usually not large enough but they still have aerobics in
one of the lounges, usually 3 or 4 times a week.

I know that most cruise lines offer aerobics in the lounges even on
smaller ships (700 passengers).

The fitness center also had 5 excercise bikes, 2 stair masters, 4 rowers,
and some nautilus type of machines (did not look as good however). vEry
limited free weights (hand held only).
