332.0. "RCCL Nordic Prince " by JOCKEY::GOLDSACKM () Fri Nov 08 1991 13:38

Please could I ask for some tips. I, or rather my Wife has been lucky
enough to win for us botha 12 day cruise, on the Nordic Prince, RCCL on
their Winward Island route. We fly to Miami from London Heathrow, Jan
18th and boardf the Ship the next day.

My problem is that I have know idea on clothes to wear, things to do,
Places to see etc. I have tried to read information in the conference
but fear that some of it is now very old. Our Travel agent is not
particularly helpful, I think this is because they are not getting any
    money direct from me.

Time is running out, so if anyone out there could give me any helpful
    hints I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance

If you can, get the large catalog from RCCL. It lists all of the itineraries,
appropriate dress for each day, and all of the activities offered, for all
cruises.

In general, half of the days you can dress up for dinner; jacket and tie, and
dinner dress. There is usually one evening that is the "Meet The Captain"
event, where you can dress up a lot and the champagne is flowing!

Bring tennis shoes, casual/sport clothes for sight-seeing and shipboard
activities. Swim suits; exercise wear if you want to work out. Hats or visors
and sunglasses for there's a lot of sun. Sunscreen; lots of sun. Cash for
tipping the crew (unless your prize takes care of that!) Cash for buying some
of the photos that are taken by the ship's photographer - they're expensive but
very beautiful and make great momentos.

Enjoy!

First of all do you know where you are going???

I took the Mexico itineraries on one the RCCL ships about 4 years ago.
You do need to pack light clothing because it is hot if you are
traveling down south way. You should also bring along a light jackets
and make sure you bring confortable shoes. Their is usally a couple of
nights that you need to get dress up those are captain night and the
farewell dinner. Men need to wear 3 peice suits (some wear tux's)
The other nights your wife can wear a dress if she wants to or a nice
pant outfit would be fine. Sometime they have western night where you
can even wear jeans to supper. The rest of the time casual clothing is
    fine.

As suggested in the note before getting a catalog from RCCL will tell
you alot. It also provides you with the different things that they are
planning for your cruise. Believe me make sure that you try to join in
on as much of the program as you can. The one that we went on had all
kinds of dance contest, saverger hunts, pool contect, and many other
activities that helps you meet the other people on the cruise. I would
also suggest that you don't sit alone for dinner, ask to be setting
with other people that are traveling alone. We met some people from
Michigan on the last cruise I went on and we write letter to each other
all the time. I could talk about cruising for hours. If you have any
thing else that I can answer for you just let me know, I have taking 7
cruises in the past 10 years and as far as I am concerned it's the only
    way to travel.

332.4Labadee UpdateJUPITR::GIBSONFri Nov 22 1991 15:1022
An update on your ports is in order. We took our first cruise last week
on the RCCL's Western Carribean route. AH what memories! We were supposed
to stop at Labadee (Haiti) for our final port. Unfortunately the Haitians
are still killing each other or trying to jump any available boat out of
the country. We did NOT stop there & someone told us that they wouldn't be
stopping their for at least another 5 months or so. Instead, RCCLsubsti-
tuted a stop in the Bahamas at another private island called Coco Cay. It's
an unihabited island that is literally under construction as a future
cruise destination paradise. Although it's not completed, there was plenty
of sand, sun, palm trees etc., without locals to hustle you. It really was
a nice spot. There was steel band music, volleyball, shopping, Bar-B-Que,
lounging on the beach or in the water & plenty of aquatic sports you
could pay to do (snorkeling, sailboard, sailing, paddle boats etc.)
As an aside, RCCL provided meals, service & entertainment that did
indeed live up to all of our expectations. I wish I were going with
you! And to do it at someone elses expense, you are one lucky soul.
As mentioned in previous replies, do get yourself a copy of RCCL's
latest cruise catalog. It will tell you everthing about ports,
excursions, dress code, tipping customs, activities & any other details.
Above all else, remember that it's your vacation & you can do
anything you want, even if that's nothing at all.
