171.0. "Mardis Gras Ship, Anyone?" by WMOIS::MBROWN () Fri Dec 15 1989 15:55

    Have any of you travelled on the ship "Mardis Gras" on the Carnival
    cruise line? I would like some feed back, I'm going to sail w/it on my
    Honeymoon during the last week of february and the beginning of March
    1990. Do you have any reccomendations of activities on board? We'll
    be travelling to the Bahamas.

    Thanx for your input.

171.1It's ok...CLOSUS::HERNDONFri Dec 15 1989 19:0816
    I was on the MARDI GRAS about 2 years ago. I've since gone on the
    Holiday and I think the Holiday is much better. The Mardi Gras
    is a very old ship...some of it you can tell where it is old
    (carpet worn, dark, bedroom decor, etc.) The pool is also kind
    of lousy...real small and the disco looks like something out of
    a bad 70's flick. The food and the captain's lounge was very nice.

    I would recommend going to the shows on ship.. in Nassau go to the straw
    market...I also recommend taking a taxi over to Paradise Island
    (rather than go on a tour) and do your own thing. Cable beach and
    casino is pretty good too.

    Just don't expect too much from the ship and you won't be
    disappointed...after all being on your honeymoon...who cares anyways?

    Hope this helped..Kristen
171.2I agree, it's ok..DNEAST::STEVENS_JIMTue Dec 19 1989 14:0623
    I cruised on the Mardi Gras about 6 years ago...Wow, has it really
    been that long??

    We went to Bermuda, so I can not give you any tips on Nassau now. We're
    going on the Fantasy in March to Nassau, so then, maybe.

    Anwyay, the Mardi Gras is a nice comfortable ship. I agree with the
    comments in -.1. Don't expect too much. The food was good, great at
    times. Service was superb. Disco is poor. But the other lounges were
    really nice. We prefered quiet areas so the Carousel Lounge was our
    favorite. Of course the Casino was a great place to spend some time.
    The casino in the Mardi Gras is the only one I've ever walked away
    a winner...Thew Showboat Lounge was another favorite.

    For activities, we enjoyed Horse Racing and the Costume Show. I should
    have won, but the crowd went for sex, not wholsomeness....

    Enjoy, and I hope you got a room with a double bed. The twin beds are
    a real problem once you get going....

171.3Double Bed, YESWMOIS::MBROWNTue Dec 19 1989 17:1910
    yes Jim,

    I believe we did get a double bed. Supposedly the Mardis Gras has been
    totally refurburshed in 1986. So maybe it'll be a little better than
    what I've been hearing about the decor and so on.

    Thanx for the tips.

171.4I did go after they upgraded29645::HERNDONThu Dec 21 1989 16:2310
    Regard .3

    I replied in .1 and just wanted to mention again, don't expect much
    on the decor...I went in 1987 AFTER the upgrade, and still consider
    the decor less than I would have liked (and it was my first cruise
    and didn't know what to expect..)

    Just have fun and don't worry about it and keep in mind, that other
    cruises will only be better...(starting at the bottom makes you
    appreciate the others more)...k
