170.0. "Panamainian registry" by VINO::FLEMMING (No reason, just policy) Sat Nov 11 1989 07:40

Your congress at work for you! There was a one liner in yesterday's
WSJ that said congress is considering not allowing ships registered
in Panama to dock at US ports to deprive Noreaga (sp?) of another
source of income. That's a lot of Carnival's fleet and some ships
from other lines. I always thought it was riduculous to even notice
the country of registry (which has always been a joke) but folks
planning future travel might want to ask their travel agents. Sure
would be disapointing to have a vacation anticipated for months get
canceled by your representatives in Washington (who knows what
cancellation insurance would do with that one).

I heard the other day that Bush set an injunction against Panama
that goes into effect Jan 1, 1990..

Anyone else hear such news ?

Yes. I heard this, too, and wondered how it would affect the many
cruise ships that are registered there.

My husband is a cruise consultant and we therefore receive travel
trade newspapers and magazines. Monday's issue of Travel Weekly
has an article regarding the Panamanian ban from US Ports effective
Feb 1, 1990 and states that other countries are offering the cruise
line reduced registration fees and it appears that the cruise lines
are scrambling to re-register with another country before the Feb
1st deadline... Will keep you posted if I hear or read more .....
