This note seems appropriate....

Is there a huge backlog at the gateways, affecting outgoing mail?

I just had an outgoing mail message (sent by way of US1RMC) that
apparently sat there for 98 hours before getting to the next hop.

Once there, it took less than 15 minutes to reach its destination
and find its way back to me via US1RMC again. (It was sent to a
maillist to which I subscribe.)

This seems abnormally long. Was it just a fluke, or is something
wrong? This maillist has had its usual activity lately, and others
(elsewhere in the world) haven't had those delays.

Some of the headers on my round-trip message are below:

I checked on us1rmc and saw a log of your message coming in from you on
Jan 22 but there were no delivery attempts until Jan 26. This is
unusual and I can only speculate that the mail handshake that takes
place did not complete for your incoming message. I was doing some
cleanup this weekend of these incomplete transactions and that may have
    finally freed your message.
