1837.0. "Tiger Woods on Sports By-line" by BRAT::LEARY (Bear Mountain garage sale finalist) Tue Feb 15 1994 18:38

Been delivering the Globe in the wee hours for a few weeks and
listening to Sports By-line and other shows out of Vegas. They
have some great interviews from all walks of sport. Last night
they had Tiger Woods the Junior Amatuer National champ on. He
is only 17 and was the youngest amatuer to compete in a PGA event
last year when he played the LA Open. Sounds like he is going to
attend Stanford University instead of going pro for now. He does
have a couple PGA events scheduled this season and sounded like a
very well spoken young man. Not a very long interview but he took
some call-ins and answered questions about competing and developing
young talent. He mostly fielded questions from some young golfers
fathers and advised them not to push too hard or they'd burn out
the child and take the fun out of the game.

In the 1994 U.S. Amateur champiionship, Tiger Woods became the
youngest (18 years old) and the first African American to win
coming from 6 strokes back at the turn.
This win gives him an automatic exemption for next years Masters
and U.S. Open. This may be a young man to watch!
Jack Nicklaus was 19 years old when he won his first Amateur
    Title.
