86.0. "Florida (info/questions)" by TRFSV2::CHAPLIN (BLASTER, 30 sticks better than 10) Wed Mar 25 1987 01:53

I would like to know of anybody out there who has golfed in
florida and stayed at the Diplomat Golf and Country Club which is
located in Hollywood Beach. Myself and three other DEC employees
are heading down there in two weeks. They sent me a brochure on
the place and it looked fantastic, but I have never seen a place
look as good as the brochure they sent you. If it is as good then
we are in for one hell of a party. (Field Service knows how to party!)

86.1not sure, but...HAVOC::DESROCHERSWed Mar 25 1987 19:0011

I'm not sure but I think Hollywood Beach is outside / near /
part of Ft Lauderdale. If it is, there were two places I
played about 10 years ago that really impressed me. My game
was a bit different then but Jacaranda was EXTREMELY difficult.
Very long. Talk show host Mike Douglas owned Bonaventure which
was really nice too. I'm pretty sure both places offer at least
36 holes. Inverrary is in the area too, I think.

86.2Bermudagrass Blues!PLANET::STANZFri Mar 27 1987 00:4619
Don't know about the Diplomat, but most places in Fla. that offer
golf pkgs do a nice job. Have fun!

If you have never played in Fla. before, it's a bit different than
up here in New England. Fairways are cut close and the ball sits
up nice and fat. The downside is the Bermudagrass. It can stop your
pitching wedge cold in its tracks. Takes a while to get the hang
    of playing out of it.

I myself am heading down there for a week of Golfomania. If the
weather is decent (which hasn't been the case for the last three
weeks) I plan to do 36 a day. If the weather isn't good.......can
you sharpen a nine iron to slash your wrists?

I leave this Sat. at 8 a.m., and plan to be on the course by 3 p.m.
    for
    a quick round before dinner.

Note 101.0 Hints for a Florida golf weekend? 2 replies

Hi,
A friend and I are planning to head down to Florida in a few weeks for a
golf weekend. Chances are we'll be staying in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.
I was hoping someone out there might be able to suggest some courses you think
we should consider. We'd be looking for a public course that's a little
challenging (we both shoot in the high 90s on a good day -- usually in the low
100s), and that we'd be able to get tee times in advance for. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tom Fitzpatrick

                         -< Try Zephyrhills, Florida >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More info from me. I wnet to Florida in Feb. Stayed at Saddlebrook,
which is a fancy golf resort north of Tampa. It has two nice course,
but for reasons on bad service and botched tee times, we ended up
playing 2 or our 3 rounds at a public course in the nearby town
of Zephyrhills. It's called The Links, and it's one of the nicest
courses I've played, and only $16. Saddlebrook is $45. You can get
a tee time, it has a nice grill, and the owner/operator Bud is one
of the nicest guys around. He really took care of us and saved what
was turning into a lousy situation because of Saddlebrook's
    incompetence.

The course looks somewhat like a Cape Cod course, with lots of
marshland, willows, and sharp, blind doglegs. It was breathtakingly
beautiful in Feb. to these weary Boston eyes. It's not in Miami,
but to me that's an advantage.

If I had it to do over again, I'd stay at the cheap Best Western
Motel in Zephyrhills, I'd play the Links every day, and I'd eat
at Jim's Steakhouse down the street. It would cost about 1/2 of
    what I spent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had the pleasure of accompanying Dave on this little Tampa outing,
    and second his opinion.

The Links was clearly the find of the week. The course was designed
to mimic, as close as possible, courses in Scotland. Obviously,
there's some difference in latitude between the two areas. However,
the designers used the local flora and typology to build a course
that can challenge anyone. In fact, I'd take Scottish heather
    over the Links swordgrass anyday.

Bud, the owner, is a pisser. An original Quincy, MA native, he'll
love to reminisce about Greater Boston and Cape courses.

    BTW--stay away from Dixie beer.

Feb 14th and figured I'd bring along the clubs. Does anyone
know of or has played any courses in the Crystal Springs area.
It is on the west coast about 50 miles north of Tampa/St. Pete.
Isn't Juniper Hills in that vicinity??? Thanks.

I would strongly recommend trying to play at Innisbrook at Tarpon
Springs. They have several courses, Sandpiper, Copperhead (rated
in Florida's top 10) an is really a first class place. I believe
you refere to Jupiter Hills, which I am told is a fantastic course,
a recent amatuer event was held there last fall. I do believe it
is a private club however. Also in your vicinity I believe is
Saddlebrook, Ridge Manor and Seven Springs Golf & Country Club.

Venice.... You may be in luck. A new TPC course opened in Venice.
It's called TPC at Prestancia. Try to contact them ahead of your
arrival to insure you can get on, TPC courses can be hard to get
on, being a member of another private club can usually get you on
however. Have your PGA pro contact the course for you. Be prepared
the greens fees are usually high, $45-$75, but the experience of
playing a "tour players course" is worth it, if only once a year.
    Good luck.

We are planning to go to Florida on our vacation. One of the places that was
suggested was Fort Meyers, FL. Does anyone have any knowledge of this area?
Important questions:
 - (Mine) How's the golf? What are the best courses?
 - (Rest of the family) What else is there to do besides eat, golf, & sleep?
My wife is not a big beach person. I try to discourage her shopping urges.
So what else is there for her to do?

    Rick,

I have been there two seperate weeks for vacations. -1 is right
in saying that there is nothing else there to do but play golf.
I've gone at the end of April each time to tuneup for the season.

They'll only let you sign up for one tee time per day. If it is
early enough than you'll have no problem with an extra nine if you
    want.

There are three courses. One is a championship course that the
Space Tour has a stop at. The Space tour is for golfers who aspire
to be on the PGA tour. I though the conditions were excellent and
the accomodations were fine. They have cleaning come into the condo's
while you are playing golf. Great Practice Area. There are a couple
of pools with bar and food service.

It is not far from Winter Haven if Spring Training is going on while
you are there. You might even see some of them at the golf course.

Also Grand Cypress is not far from there. You might want to setup
a tee time there for one of the days. I understand it is really
    nice.

    Have Fun!

Note 847.0 Any courses near Key West? No replies

I'm going down to the Florida keys in a month or so. I have no idea if there
are any courses in the area, I'll have a car so I don't mind driving at all.

I assume there isn't much in Key West, but are there any decent courses within
an hour or so? I'm not familiar with the area much at all.

								Thanks,

I'm going to Ft. Lauderdale and Nassua, Bahamas next week. I won't
have time to play in Nassua, but I do have an afternoon free in
    Ft. Lauderdale.

What are some good courses in the Lauderdale area ? I don't think
my wife will play, but she will go to see the course. I will be
    needing to rent clubs.

The Sheraton Bonaventure Resort and Spa has 2 18-hole championship golf
courses. The Harbor Beach Marriot in Ft. Lauderdale was able to get us
    on.

I was in Lauderdale over Christmas, I played at the Broward
Golf club. It has been newly renovated and is in really nice shape.
It's located on Broward Blvd just past the Florida turnpike overpass.

In case you don't know where Broward Blvd. is all the streets
are numbered besides having names. Get a map and find the intersection
of "0" and "0" street and go west. Broward is the "0" street running
    east to west.

I have reservations for AUgust 22,23 and 24th at the Marriott Sawgrass
in Vedra Beach, FLorida, outside of Jacksonville. It's supposed to be
a new resort with TPC courses. I was wondering if anyone has played
there, if so which courses of the 5 do you recommend. I'm a beginner
but my husband has been playing a long time. Any thing about the place
you can give me hints on, restaurants, people, dress, etc would be
    greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to be at the Ponte Vedra Inn which I think is around
Jacksonville at the end of this month. Any help on golf courses and
inexpensive places to stay around there would be greatly appreciated as
I may try to go there a couple of days earlier than my business
requires and get a few rounds of golf in.

thanks in advance for your help.

    regards,

You probably will want to play the TPC at Sawgrass. You'll drive by
the PGA Headquarters on the way. They're about 3 miles south of the
Ponte Vedra Inn. I don't know any INexpensive places to stay, though.
Unless you lay out a sleeping bag on the beach.

If you have fun on your trip, please DON'T tell us about it! ;-)

I'm going down to the Sarasota area on April 14th, for 9 days. I would
love to play at the TPC course there, but don't know how to go about this. I do
know I would have to somehow contact them soon to see if it's possible. Does
anyone know the course name and possibly have a phone number? I'm not sure, but
something like Prestencia sounds familiar for the course name.
Also, anyone else have any favorite courses down around the Sarasota
area, that I and my borther-in-law can get on, without having to reserve a tee
time more than 2 or 3 days ahead of time?

Good luck trying to get on the TPC course its very difficult. I was
down in February but my attempt to play there conflicted with the
Seniors visit the same week and they wouldn't let us play ! Imagine the
    nerve !!!

In the Venice area there are some nice courses - Waterford and Venice
Golf and Country Club. If you have time to play only one pick VGCC.
This course was under construction last June and was open for play in
January - its also one of the best I have ever played.

    Have fun !

You can't swing a club without hitting a good golf course in the state
of Florida. The big question is "How much do you want to spend" and
what is your idea of a good course. You have to remember this is
Snow-Bird season and most resort courses are closed to outside play,
and most semi-private raise their rates to $45-$75. As far as public
courses in the Orlando area are far and few, and not that good. Most
Municipal tracks offer advance tee times to residents only so try to
plan ahead if your playing with a group, single play is no problem. I
can help you out for Orlando to Cocoa.

    Good Luck

When in Orlando, play the course they play the Walt Disney stop on.
You may want to look for Doral and if you get a chance, go over to
Ponte Vedra. In a five mile radius, you have two courses at Ponte
VEdra Inn, 3 at Pnte Vedra Beach Club, a public course and the two
    courses at Sawgrass.
