30.0. "See the Seniors???" by RUBY::CORBETT (Mike Corbett) Mon Aug 11 1986 20:30

Did anybody else catch the Digital Seniors Classic at the Nashutic
(sp) CC in Concord this weekend. I caught the last round on Sunday.
What a finish it went down to the final put...but player couldn't
sink the fifteen footer to but it into sudden death so Chi Chi
    Rodriguiez won it.

Boy Chi Chi was quite the show-man with his little sword act after
each birdie. It was an enjoyable day.

Was a marshall on Thurs. and Fri. for the pro-am (should have drawn
hazardous duty pay) and watched the whole thing on Sun. at the 18th
    green. A great finish.

One thing did occur to me as I marshalled, though. The gallery was
following Chi Chi and Gary Player around, and no one else. I thought
it was too bad to see the OTHER greats like Doug Ford, Dow Finsterwald,
et al going relatively unnoticed. They could have been playing a
private match on a Sunday afternoon for all anyone knew. The only
gallery these other guys drew was the family members of the amateurs,
and sometimes NO one was around except we marshalls. Not very
respectful of what these older men have meant to the game. They
don't have the glamour and flash of Chi Chi, but you better believe
I saw some fantastic shots and great putts.

Fame is so fleeting. Even Lee Elder, last years champ, was without
a following. Not only do these fellows have to put up with the vagaries
of age, but it is all too apparent that the crowds are fickle also.

Maybe Chi Chi and Gary will know the feeling when Nicklaus and Trevino
    get to age 50............

I'm not implying that it's their (Chi Chi and Player) fault- I'm
saying that WE (the public) are the fickle ones.

BTW, Player didn't commit for next year when asked.

I was only there on Sunday, so I thought the crowd was only
following the leaders in the last groups. I got there about 10
and just walked around the course following different groups
just to see what the course was like, then alittle before the final
group te'ed off went to the 4th and waited till the the final group
came, then we go a few more holes ahead....

There were quite a few people who put together a good round on Sunday.
There were quite a few 6 unders (Elder,Adams,Chi CHi...).

A friend of mine played in the Pro-am, he was in Elders group. He
shot an 80 and his group did the best overall....

How come I didn't see anything around Digital about it, in VTX or
anywhere or did I just miss it.

30.3Publicity for "Classic"PLANET::STANZFri Aug 15 1986 20:0811
There were signs up in a few locations to sign up for marshalling,
but it really was not publicized as much as it could have been.
They contacted all the Golf Leagues they could to solicit for
volunteers to marshall, but on Thurs. and Fri. they were short handed.
There was no sign in our facility, but my wife works in Sales where
they were lining up customers to be in the pro-am, and she gave
    me the info.

Maybe next year they will do a better job of publicity. It has been
going on for four years (or more) and each year it gets a *little*
    better publicized.

I heard about it from my family, didn't hear anything in work.
It was a real weird thing...My brother is a grounds keeper at
Nashautic, it was sponsered by the company I work at, and the proceeds
went to the hospital where my mother works....
30.5who's digital?OLORIN::SEGERTue Aug 19 1986 22:078
Just one more reason to stop calling ourselves Digital! I had seen something
in the paper talking about the Digital Seniors Classic, but not having seen
anything at work and KNOWING that there are a lot of companies with Digital
in their name, I just assumed it was some other company.

Now if it was called the DEC Seniors Classic...

30.6ME TOO!!!USWAV3::FAGERBERGThu Aug 21 1986 23:507
A friend asked me if I was going, and of course I had heard nothing
about Digital sponsering the thing..NOTHING on the bulletin board.
My friend works at the Boston Globe (newspaper) in advertising and
we, and some individuals who were trapped here for the weekend (BEST
training), went as guests of the Globe. Hot and cold buffet, open
bar, gifts (dozen balls, hat, tote bag) AND the golf was pretty
    good too.
