606.0. "How far is far" by CSCOA3::CONWAY_J (Marietta Cuisenart) Fri May 12 1989 13:57

At the driving range, I see very few people who can CONSISTANTLY
hit their driver beyond 200 yards. I hit mine about 220 (carry)
on a GOOD day. I also suspect that most folks are real creative
about yardage. SO come on, how far do you hit it? when you hit it
    "straight".

How about you? No embroidary please.

606.1My far is not far when it comes to irons.WORDS::NISKALARob Murphy=Tim Lollar:FireStarterFri May 12 1989 14:2916
    	Driver ~ 240
    	3 Wood ~ 230
    	5 Wood ~ 210

	4 Iron ~ 165

	6 Iron ~ 150
	7 Iron ~ 140
	8 Iron ~ 130
  	9 Iron ~ 110

Actually the 8,9 irons are pretty much guesses. I always hit
my 7 iron when inside 140 to the green, just choke down on it and
swing a little easier. Only use the wedge in those cases where I
    can't chip'n'run to the cup.

Here are my mid-season values (all yardages +- 15 yards!)

    Driver 240-260 yds
    3 wood 220-230
    5 wood 200-220
    2 iron 195-205
    3 iron 195

    9 iron 125
    pw 110
    sw 100
    putter 170

The putter yardage is based on a round I had back when I was in high
school. I bet another team member that I could score lower on a par
3 using just my putter than he could with his full set. The hole was
a 170 yd long par 3, and I scored a 5 to his 6. When we arrived at
the second par 3 (a mere 140 yards) we went double-or-nothing. I hit
the best tee-putter of my life (it landed about 6" from the hole, but
alas, no backspin) and rolled to the back fringe. My opponent parred
the hole, and I sunk a 20 footer for birdie!

Can I ask how these distances were verified? No offense but most
people tend to overestimate distance, particularly with the longer
clubs. Without some rigorous measurement methods I'd say the proper
forum for a subject like this is the 19th hole. :-)

I've been known to use a driver and a pitching wedge to the green
on a hole marked on the card as 360 yds. That is all I will claim.
Means you have to believe the course measured the hole accurately.
Other than that very few people have a place and take the time to
    accurately measure a long shot.

By the way, does a distance claim for a long shot include roll or
not and should time of year and watered condition of the course
    be factored into the claim.

    re. 606.4
I guess that the course that I play at has bogus NCGA certification
markers for distance. Of course the 150 yard markers are also only
100 yards out so that we all think we are a bunch of gorillas. Some
players hit the ball farther than I do and some don't. Most of those
that don't hit the ball as far as I do cream me in the scoring
department so it doesn't really matter how far it goes just how
many times you have to hit it to find the bottom of the hole. By
the way, those yardages are approximate and in my case are for carry
only. If I really turn it on it is easy to get 10-15 more yards!
SO WHAT, I HAVE STILL ONLY BROKE 90 TWICE!!!!!!!

Take it from a FORMER blaster. This year is the year of accuracy
for me! Last year I would muscle an 8 iron from as far as 160 out,
NO MORE... use a seven or a six and smoooooooooth it.
I CAN carry a drive about 240 on a good day and that can translate
into 300+ yards downhill, on hardpack, with wind. It also can be
240 only uphill, in the muck.

    re: .6
Right on, they don't give many checks out for distance...only
    for low scores....

    re: .0
As Hogan proved years ago there is a minimum, regular, and maximum
distance with each club....the trick is to recognize what you regular
distance is, how it is affected by the days playing conditions(i.e.
wind, heavy air, damp conditions, dry conditions, etc.) then to
be able to identify the correct shot in any given situation and
choose the correct club to hit the given shot....

If you hit a 6 iron 150 and your 20-40 yards to the right of
the 150 marker this may really be a 170yd shot not 150 as most people
would assume....the measurements are from the markers to the center
of the green in most cases and if you think of it in terms of
geomertry(?)the distance is always farther than we think...hence
most of us are usually short....the pros have EXACT YARDAGES and
seldom underclub unless it's on purpose because of conditions....

    my .2 cents worth...
606.8SHORT HITTERJAWS::DIAZCMG/CDG/SAMGMon May 15 1989 15:1725
I started playing golf (regularly) about 5 years ago, and for the
first 2-3 years could never have a solid straight hit with any mid to
long iron. What was happening was that I wasn't turning my wrist
back to square position. So in order to do that I turned to a
"kinder and gentler" swing, so my distance hurt but I gained in
accuracy. I am still incosistent but I have managed to hit regularly
in the 90's and have had a couple of under 90 scores.

So enough for justification, here are the distances I use as
guidelines to chose a club, but, as has been said, it may not be very
    accurate:

    Driver 210
    3 wood 195
    5 wood 180
    3 iron 170
    4 iron 160
    5 iron 150
    6 iron 140
    7 iron 130
    8 iron 120
    9 iron 100

Some of us arn't very consistant. Most of the time I'll put a ball
out about 240 yards (When I hit it straight). But every once in
a while I'll really nail it and put it out about 300yds. I'll hit
one like that maybe 5 times a year.

Real Long Drives at Amherst CC Amherst NH.
Hole #2 Drove straight out to the curve about 10-20yds
past the sand trap on right.
Hole #10	Drove past the last tree (that real big one
    			on the right).
Hole #12	Drove the green with a 3 wood. Tee's were on
    			the right of the pond.

Unfortunatly long drives don't necessarly buy you anything. I'd
prefer to be more accurate with my woods. My short irons are sometimes
the only thing that saves me from a real bad score. I've learned
how to become a good scrambler. My woods have drastically improved
over the last 3 years, but even at that rate it'll take be another
5-10 years to be shooting near par (that is if I keep improving
    at the same rate).
