Conference 7.286::golf

   A SALES GIMMICK? PERHAPS. CERTAINLY THEY HAVE MY ATTENTION.  GUESS
    I'M A SOFT TOUCH.  I ANTICIPATE THE PURCHASE OF THIS SET WITHIN
    THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.  MY "RATIONALE" IS THAT I'M AN IRONS ONLY PLAYER
    ANYWAY, AND MAYBE THE THE SINGLE DRIVER WON'T SCREW ME UP TOO BADLY.
    BTW--I'M A ST. ANDREWS GRIP PERSON (BOTH HANDS SEPARATE) AND I NEED
    TO GET MY REFERENCE LIBRARY BACK TOGETHER.  GOT ANY IDEAS ON WHERE
    I CAN FIND THE GOLF DIGEST ISSUE (@ TWO YEARS AGO) THAT DISCUSSES
    THE ST. ANDREWS GRIP?  MY ISSUE HAS DISAPPEARED.
    
    

    Hi, glad someone finally replied.  Question: Have you actually played
    with the Cannon's?  Did the design help you?   I guess i am just
    fascinated by the "look" of these clubs, they are the ultimate in
    hitech in my estimation, but I wouldn't want to buy them at that
    price unless there was some significant benefit....and not just
    the industrial design award that goes with them.  
    
    P.S.  the use of all caps in a notesfile is considered SHOUTING
           by the cognoscenti.....so when in Rome....

     Can't say that I've played a round with my "dream" clubs, but I
    really like the "theoretical" results of shooting on an indoor range
    with VCR and "Dynamic (?)" swing analyzer.  BTW--is CSC the customer
    Support Center in Atlanta?

    I think the article "Improving Your Grip" was published during the
    Fall (87) or Winter (88) in Golf Digest.  If I recall correctly,
    (if you can say Altzheimer's,  you don't have it) it was a three
    or four page article.  Any help?

    When I was looking to replace my beginner set about two years ago, my
    game with woods  was  much  better (or less worse) than my iron game.
    So I saw in a magazine and ad for the Spalding Executive SX(?), which
    I guess are the predecessors of the Cannon advance.
    
    What I liked was that  the irons looked like woods;i.e., bulky heads,
    and in my mind I thought, that I would improve my game with them only
    because mentally I would think I was playing woods.
    
    So I went to Nevada Bobs and  asked  for  them.   I am a very skeptic
    person and tend not to trust salesperson (I  used  to  be  one!), but
    what the guy there said made sense to me:   those clubs are difficult
    to hit  other than square face, and the ball not ahead because of the
    bulky head.  It might have  been  good for my game for a year or two,
    but when my game improved I wouldn't  have been able to play the ball
    in tight situations.
    
    Since I was looking for a good set that would last more than a couple
    of seasons, I decided for a more conventional set and got some Mizuno
    Altrons.  Then I decided I would work on my iron game, and now I feel
    confortable  with  them to the point that I am considering buying a 2
    and even maybe a 1 iron.

    I own a set of Spaulding Executive XEs' and I love them. It is much
    easier to get the ball airborn and they are really forgiving. I
    let a friend of mine borrow a long iron once during a round and
    he stoped on the way home and bought a set for himself.
    
    Since the clubs do have a different appearance than a traditional
    blade it takes a little adjusting to the new image that you are
    presented with. The pro that I take lessons from like the feel of
    the clubs but beleives that he could never adjust to the look of
    them. 
    
    I plan on playing this set for a long time to come.
