What is the posibility of holding this event in September?

I ask this question because I plan on being in New Hampshire
visiting my folks for the month. BTW I live in Holland and
I have been silent for the last three years only regeistering
    in the old registry.

I love reading in this conference and really enjoyed all the
ribbing that took place in the last Challenge Cup note.

P.S. I will now sign in the new registry.

    			< September!!!>

I'll second the motion that we go for ealier in the year. I
was in the last group last year and it was pretty cold on the
back nine. No Excuse mind you...The Eagles will be back to
avenge there poor showing last year.

  Splash and Perry,

Sorry, but September is out due to a number of other committments I have
for that month. I do have some good news to report however. Thanks to
last year's champion, Peter Stopera, we have one of the finest courses in
New England booked for Monday, October 15th.

It is Sky Meadow in Nashua, NH and we are getting a break in the price.
Normally it is a $50 greens fee/w cart. For the Challenge Cup, it will
be $40 a person. Sky Meadow, by all reports is a sensational course and
that price it is a nice bargain. A big note of thanks to Peter again!!

To get in at this price, we need a minimum of 40 players booked. If it
looks like we won't reach the minimum, we'll start investigating another
  alternative for a course.

Again, sorry about not having it in September. If there is enough
pushback on the October date and most of you really do want it in
September, I'll be happy to step aside as organizer and let someone
else do the Challenge Cup for this year. Peter mentioned that there were
some September dates open for us if we wish.

To register, send me vaxmail at DEMSUP::BLAISDELL. Include your name
and your partner's name. BTW, for those who are unfamiliar with this
tournament, it is a two person scramble event (no handicaps). Check out
the other Challenge Cup topic for an idea of what it is all about.
This year, we will have a Women's division (if we get a minimum of 4
    teams).

The entry fee will probably be a few dollars more than the $40
Sky Meadow fee to cover prizes etc. I'll be in later with the exact
    amount.

Just an update as to where we stand. 9 teams have signed up
thus far. The teams signed up are all teams that played last year.
Let's see some new faces for this year's cup. Remember, if we don't
get 40 players mininum, then we don't get to play Sky Meadow!

And how about the ladies? We need a minimum of four teams to
establish the Women's division of the Challenge Cup. Let's go!

For those that wish to play but cannot find a partner, sign up
with me anyway. Provide a handicap, league, MGA, USGA whatever
and I'll pair you up with another single from the pool. I'll
do my best to create teams that will be competitive with the rest
  of the teams.

To register, send mail to DEMSUP::BLAISDELL or ISLNDS::BLAISDELL

Here are the teams signed up so far...

Currently, we have 40 players signed up for the Challenge Cup. Keep
up the good work and spread the word around. There has been a
disappointing response from the women golfers. Only one has signed

We are up to 26 teams signed up to play in CPII ! Incredible response
folks. Thank you. With this many teams we should be able to have prizes
for the 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

One thing to shoot for is that if we can get (gulp) 70 players for
this tournament, the pro would consider us for a shotgun start.

We are desperately looking for women teams. Only one team has signed
  up so far!

Two non-digital employees looking for a digital partner(s) for the
Challenge Cup II. The other day I mentioned to one of my co-workers
about the Challenge Cup II tournament. Well he was very interested in
playing and asked his regular partner that he plays with if he'd like to
play. They both wanted to play, so I asked Rick B. if a two non-Decies
could sign up as a team. The answer was that atleast one person on the
team has to be a DEC employee. I talked with my friend and informed him
of the rule. He and his partner are still wanting to play and are
looking for two DEC employees that are looking for a partner(s). Let me
tell you alittle bit about these guys.

Jon is currently a 15 handicap, doesn't hit the ball real long, can
make good shots and putts incredibly. Jon is also very capable of
shooting in the high 70's. A good match for Jon would be
someone who can hit the long ball accurately and plays a good all
    around game.

His friend (I don't recall his name at the moment) is an 8 handicap and
plays a good all around game. I think he would be looking for someone
who can putt and chip well. Also someone who plays fairly good golf.

I think both these guys would like to have a shot a winning the
tournament, so if you think you may be the partner for either one of
them and you want to take home the Challenge Cup trophie to put on your
mantle for a year, get in touch with me by E-mail and well make a
winning match! Although I really don't think you'll win cause Steve and
I are going to win this year. We have a secret weapon! Maybe 2!

Walta,

Bob Mook and Peter Stopera, the current champs, will be tough to
beat. Sky Meadow is Peter's home course. Bob Mook plays in our BXO league
at Green Meadows and is carrying a 2 handicap for nine. Bob seems to
average 2+ birds for 9 holes each week! The guy is consistently all over
the flag with his approach shots.

Gotta watch out for the BB's, though. My partner, Rick Blaisdell,
is putting very well from the left side, switching from the right earlier
this summer.

	Going to be fun!!

The defending Champion Bombers, they will definitely not
hand over the Cup without a battle. People on the inside are saying
Pete Stopera is playing in the 70's , along with Bob Mook carrying
    around a 4 ???? Ouch !

However, if the favorites won all the time we wouldn't be spending
our time guessing on the Pro's right? And how many times did Greg
    Norman win ??

The BB's were the team to beat last year, and battled till defeat...
will the bulls eyes on the Bombers backs take them out also ??

re: Peter's Comment about playing the course before the C-Cup II

Definitely! I played it a month ago and thought, "gee, you really have to
play this course a few times to know what the heck to do off-the-tee, or
what to avoid around the greens..."

I am playing at Sky Meadow tomorrow in my Backspinners Golf Association

The current enrollment for Challenge Cup II numbers 74 players and
36 established teams! Unreal. There will be at least two more teams added in
the near future. Registration is still open for this 2 person scramble
event. Barring an unforseen exodus of players, there will be a shotgun
  start at 8:30.

I should mention that this is not a DEC sponsored event, so please
handle the time off from work accordingly (vacation, personal day, etc.).

I won't be as brash with my claims for the BB's this year. Last year
my short game was so pitiful that the BB's knew we really didn't have
a prayer, so we could goof around and claim we were great. This year
  is different. 'Nuff said.

"Ricky the Geek" will be back in a little bit with the pre-tournament
  odds.

Sky Medow is 6590 yards from the back tees par 72, with a course rating of
73.3 and a slope of 133, sprinkler heads have yards to center of greens.

#1 - 506 yards (par 5)

Down hill par 5, real big hitters can carry the bunker and have an iron into
the green, if you can hit it big aim over the center of the bunker, otherwise
aim to the left of the bunker, be careful there is ob left and water right,
second shot from around bunker is just a 7 or 8 iron into an area sournded
on 3 sides by water, it will leave you a wedge into the green, pretty flat
green. Birdy hole.

#2 - 188 yards (par 3)

An island green, on a dome, the only place to miss it is short or in the
bunker, very deep green, sever breaks.

#3 - 395 yards (par 4)

Real big hitters can drive the bunker, aim at the left hand corner of the
bunker, don't go left or you'll end up wet and don't go right or you'll
be blocked out, need to hit a good stright drive, toughest 2nd shot on
the course, stright up hill to a green that dosn't hold, best play is to
hit it short and hope it bounces up, don't want to go long, best to miss
short, green has sneeky breaks. Be happy with a par.

#4 - 388 yards (par 4)

Hardest tee shot on the course, aim at the right side of the bunker, hit
it stright and long, ob left and woods right, second shot is up hill,
usually the ball is below you feet and you have to play a draw into the
green (dogleg left), very hard green to read, be happy with a par.

#5 - 336 yards (par 4)

Long hitters should aim over the bunker which will leave them a wedge
to the green, but you need to hit it very stright, jungle left and
woods right, everything kicks right, I usually hit an iron down to
the 150's, second shot is up hill, so get it there, but don't go long or
left, most sever green on the course, birds are hard to come by, again be
happy with a par.

#6 - 523 yards (par 5)

90 degree dogleg left, very hard to reach in 2, hit drive stright, don't
need to be long, ob left and right, watch out for bunker on right, 2nd
shot is usually a long iron, play a draw down to the bunker which will
leave you a wedge to the green, green has sneaky breaks, birdy hole.

#7 - 322 yards (par 4)

Aim over the bunker, this hole was built for all you slicers out there,
hit a hard fade over the trap and you'll have a sand wedge to the green,
hit it too far left and you'll wish your wedge was 2 feet longer, hit
it too far right and you're ob, stay below the hold if you want to make
a bird, don't go long, severly sloped green.

#8 - 159 yards (par 3)

Make sure you get it there (it's uphill), very deep green.

#9 - 433 yards (par 4)

Dogleg right, play the power fade down the tree line will leave you a mid iron
into the green, the drive is everything on this hole, 2nd shot is into a big
green, green is pretty flat. Nice hole for a bird.

#10 - 356 yards (par 4)

Uphill dogleg left, ob right, woods left, aim at the bunker (which is not
in play), short to mid iron into a big green, stay below the hole, don't
go long, but get it there.

#11 - 231 yards (par 3)

Stright down hill, depending on the wind, hit anything from a driver to a mid
iron (your guess is as good as mine) ob right, don't go left either, best to
miss it short, big flat green, be happy with a 3.

#12 - 523 yards (par 5)

Reachable in 2 for big big hitters, carry over water is about 190 yards, longer
if you slice, I usually play a long iron for the 2nd shot, there is a bunker
about 80 yards from the green, so play left of the green, also don't slice on
your tee shot or 2nd shot, or you'll be ob, usually a wedge into a very sloped
green, birds can be had.

#13 - 364 yards (par 4)

Stright away, keep you tee shot right, don't go left or you have a shot where
the ball is at your chin (ie sever side hill lie), ob right, usually a short
2nd shot, good hole for a 3.

#14 - 548 yards (par 5)

If the tees are all the way back - good luck, otherwise I hate to tell anyone
how to play this hole, because I still don't know. It can be reached in 2
with 2 real good shots if the tees are up, flat green that wouldn't hold
a soggy grapefruit.

#15 - 196 yards (par 3)

Nice hole, make sure you get it there, slightly uphill and usually into the
wind. Be happy with a 3.

#16 - 372 yards (par 4)

Stright away, water on 3 sides of the tee shot landing area, very narrow,
good luck, hit what ever you hit the strightest, mid to short iron into
a somewhat flat green. Tee shot is everything.

#17 - 341 yards (par 4)

Dogleg right, hit is right and you're wet, bunker is not in play (ok who's going
to prove me wrong), usually a wedge or short iron to the green, severly sloped,
good birdie hole.

#18 - 409 yards (par 4)

Dogleg left, uphill, plays longer, big hitters can reach the trap, hit drive
at or to the right of the bunker, leaves you a long to mid iron to the green,
make sure you get it there on the 2nd shot, it uphill, very flat green.

990.22Winning score...?MSEE::KELLEYGolf, golf, and more golfThu Sep 06 1990 17:4024

Well, before "Ricky the Greek" posts the odds, anybody care to predict
    a winning score...?

Last year everybody thought I was crazy to predict -8 for a winning
score. They were right, but I wasn't off by much with the winning
    score being -6...

Since this years site will be considerably more difficult than last
year (in my opinion after only playing the course once), I will say
that the minning score will be -3.

Looking throught the list of teams I see MANY capable(sp) players,
with many teams having a chance at winning. I think the Salem Aces
will be right up near the top though (if not at the top ;-)...).
This year I plan to give my partner some help, unlike last year when
he had to carry me all the way...

Is anybody planning to handle and pools? Like best front, back, and total
    or anything along those lines...

It will be here before we know it...!
    BTW, good luck to all...

The winning score will -5, a few teams will be close but double bogies
will have killed them, if they continue to not cut the rough up there
the winning score will be -2. Keep it in the short grass.

Here is yet an update for Challenge Cup II. Due to a change in
jobs, I've been kind of quiet lately regarding this tournament. With
CCII only a month away, information should be coming to you more with
a little more frequency. I will be sending this info to those on my
mail distribution list and crossposting the same messages to the golf notes
conference located in MSEE::GOLF (topic #990). If you have a non-deccie
teammate, please ensure that they get these messages. Separate topics
which will get published shortly(I hope) will concern:

        Course etiquette/dress code
        Course description
        Prize listings
Final player list and pairings for the 15th

I can now be reached at NHASAD::BLAISDELL. Don't have a dtn yet but
I'll publish that when I get it. I'm located up in MKO1 now. The next

990.27Handicap Suggestion for Challenge Cup IIGWYNED::DWHITEThu Sep 20 1990 14:2651
    			Challenge Cup Handicapping Suggestion

    Jeff:

The Digital Challenge Cup Event sounds great. Skymeadow is in great
shape and is a very challenging course from the blues (slope 137).

I have a suggestion to make the competition factor in handicaps and
still use the scramble format: Point Quota:

Here's how it would work: Take the average handicap of the two golfers
that make up a team and subtract that from 36. The answer becomes the
point quota needed by that team. Award points via the following format:

Ace (Hole in one)	10 points
    	Eagle 6 points
    	Birdie 3 Points
    	Par 2 Points
    	Bogey 1 Point
    	Double bogey 0
Triple Bodegy and above	-1 Point

Lets look at how this would work:

    Team A Player 1 2 Team B	Player 1	17
    		Player 2 4 Player 2	19
    		Average 3 Average 18

    Team C	Player 1 8
    		Player 2 11
    		Average 9

Round down because lower handicap should hit better shots

Points Required:	Team A Team B Team C
    			  33 18 27

Now Team A posts a 70 they should be about +2
Team B posts a 88 they should be about +2
Team C posts s 80 they should be about +2

In a scamble format the scores should improve but the handicaps will
put everyone in a position to win if they play to there handicaps.

If you go in scratch, players under a 10 handicap have a huge
adavantage and should win all the team prizes.

Just a suggestion, I think the format is great and the course is
    fantastic.

    Regards, Dave White

re. .27 Dave

Interesting suggestion. I'll watch the feedback in this notes file
about this. I'll only consider this type of handicapping for prize
distribution other than the Challenge Cup trophies themselves. The
original premise for the tournament was that this was a best two-man
scratch event. The trophies will still be awarded to that team. It's
up to the participants to construct a team that can best compete under
that format. All the teams entered should be aware of that format before
   signing up.

You're method seems solid, but is based on one assumption. That
assumption being that all players have legitimate, verifiable handicaps.
We have close to 100 players now signed up, which will increase the
chances of players not having handicaps.

I think it would ruin the tournament if the tourny became
a handicap event. Like Rick says, this tourny was founded because
of a previous problem starting a handicap tournament. The only
way to get strokes from a better player, is to practice ;) !

                        CHALLENGE CUP FORMAT/COST

   - Challenge Cup II will be a two-person team scratch scramble tournament.
There will be a men's division and a women's division with each division
competing for Challenge Cup trophies. A trophy will be awarded to each
     member of the winning team.

   - A scramble tournament is where both members of the team hit from the
same spot. The best shot of the two is then selected, and the process
continues until the ball is holed out.

   - Very simply, the team with the lowest gross score will win the tournament.
Ties will be broken, based on performance on the low handicap(hardest)
holes for the round completed. No sudden death playoff.

   - The tournament will be played on Monday, October 15th at Sky Meadows
CC in Nashua NH. I will provide directions to the course in a subsequent
message. There will be a 8:30 shotgun start. Your team *must* be at the
course no later than 8:00 am to allow for collection of fees. Try to get
to the course an hour before the start (7:30).

   - Tournament cost is $45 per person. $40 of the fee represents a
discounted green fee which includes gas/electric cart. That fee is payable
to the pro shop. The pro will have a sign-in sheet with all players listed
alphabetically. Payment will be in cash only.

   - Prize fee. There is a $5 per person fee for prizes. A portion of this fee
will also cover the purchase of the challenge cup trophies for the women's
division. A list of prize categories will be coming in a subsequent
message. This fee will be payable to me in the pro shop. I or Jeff Burke
will be standing near the sign-in sheet. The fee is payable in cash only. Please,
Bring a $5 bill with you! It may be hard for us to keep making change for
     20's and 50's.

   - Food and refreshments is currently being worked on by Dave Sullivan.
The $45 fee does not include provisions for food.
990.33Tournament RULESELENAS::BLAISDELLSign up for Challenge Cup 90Thu Sep 20 1990 21:0551
                ********** CHALLENGE CUP RULES **********

        1) Men will be playing from the Blue(championship) tee markers.
Women will be playing from red (or forward) tee markers.

        2) Order of hitting is by team that wins honors from the previous
hole. 1st tee, flip a coin or tee.

        3) Team furthest away hits first, always.

        4) Leaf Rules - (Hopefully, this won't be a factor)

            a) If you lose a ball in the *fairway* because of leaves, and your
group comes to a consensus ruling that the ball was indeed in
the fairway, then you are allowed a free drop with no penalty.
            b) While looking for a *lost* ball in the rough where there are
leaves, and you should move your ball by *accidently* stepping on
or kicking it while clearing leaves, there will be no penalty.
            c) There will be a penalty assessed (to player not the team) if
a player (or partner) should move the ball while clearing leaves
away from it. Key is that the player has already found the ball.
            d) You may clear leaves away from a drop area prior to the drop.
               (Changed from last year).

        5) Preferred lies in your own fairway. You may lift, clean and place
within 1 foot either side or back from original spot. The first
player to hit should mark the hitting area with a tee, 2 feet to
the right or left of the original lie. Do *not* place in the rough
or in fairway other than your own.

        6) Drop in rough or fairway other than your own - The player who's
ball was found and to be used for the next shot in the rough, must
play first and play the shot as is. The second player on the team
is allowed to drop approx. near the original spot (within 1 foot
either side or back). If the second player's drop lands in player
A's divot then the team will be allowed one free redrop. You must
drop, arm extended and from shoulder height. Opposing team,
please note any violations of these rules and immediately bring to
the attention of the violating team and assess a 1 stroke penalty
(no second chances) on the spot.

        7) Player who's ball was selected and that is in the bunker, must
hit first. His partner may then rake over the hit area, and
then *place* his ball in the bunker. Drops in bunkers more
than likely would produce a fried egg lie, which is why we are
            opting for the place rule.

        8) You *must* have fun!!

        9) All other USGA rules in affect. Take a rule book with you!!!

990.34Low Gross WinsGWYNED::DWHITEFri Sep 21 1990 12:5212
    	Challenge Cup Rules

If low gross is the rule, fair enough. Five dollars in the prize pool
seems very reasonable for a low gross tournament. If the fee was $15
then I would suggest having both low gross and low net. I'm not
suggesting raising the fee to $15 but I heard that discussed and if
that was the case then I would support both a low gross and low net.
For those that don't have handicaps use a calliway system.
Anyway, sounds like an excellant tourney. I'll predict that the
teams that have 10 handicaps and below will dominate, most times the
best golfers win and the rules are set up to award the best golfers.
    Looking forward to playing.

Yes, the dress code will be posted today. Hang in there! The drop rule

990.37Point quota would be a disasterCURIE::TDAVISFri Sep 21 1990 16:1014

-< Handicap Suggestion for Challenge Cup II >-

This approach would be fair if the handicaps of the two entries were
almost the same, but the team with one high handicapper and one low
handicapper would clean up. Lets face it, the ball belonging to the
low handicapper--or the one having the good day--would be the ball in
play most of the day. You have a 2 combined with a 20, and, basically,
you're giving the 2 a quota of 9. I'd like that!

A scramble is designed for scratch play. Stick with it.

                     POLICIES SPECIFIC TO SKY MEADOWS

RAIN - Our policy for the tournament is that it is a rain or shine event.
If the course becomes unplayable while we are playing, (needs to
rain real bad, the course handles water real well), we can play
another day to be determined later.

CARTS - They are mandatory. You can go anywhere (not greens and tees!)
with the cart provided the course is dry, if the course is wet
everyone must keep the carts on the cart paths.

DRESS - NO jeans. Collared shirts only. If it is unseasonably warm you can
wear bermuda shorts. Other kinds of shorts will not be allowed.
Adhere to this dress code, as they are strict about it.

LOCAL RULES - Every water hazard is a lateral and is defined by red stakes

Well, I got to play Sky Meadow for the second time yesterday, the
first time was at the beginning of the season... And for the second
    time the course definately won...!!!

For those of you that have not played the course yet, you are in
for both a treat and a CHALLENGE...!

Congrats to Rick Blaisdell for the low gross yesterday...

I second Gene's opinion, Sky Meadow is most definitely a treat to play!
What a superb course, it truly is breath taking! I am certainly glad I
played it once before the Challenge Cup II event. 3 or 4 under is going
to be a great score on that day. Lot's of holes birdies can be had, but
those same holes could result in bogie fairly easily too! Good Luck to
all playing, the 15th will be here shortly.

Well, well, well. What a golf course! Spectacular layout, Scenic
vistas, impressive villas. It was super to finally get out and play
this thing. If you get the chance, play it before Challenge Cup
  time.

I was definitely intimidated and tentative for the first 7 holes,
until it finally clicked to play it aggressively and without fear.
A very bad round turned into a fun round. Thanks to Peter Stopera
for getting Challenge Cup Jr. organized.

I will be coming forth with my own hole by hole descriptions in
  a bit.

My opinion is that if the weather is cold and windy, 1 or 2 under
will win it. If we get a day like yesterday, then 4 or 5 under will
win. Like Paul said, many birdie holes, but the slightest mistake and...
    ....ouch..!

Registration for Challenge Cup II has officially closed. From this
point on, if anyone signs up, they will be put on an alternate list.
I'll use the FIFO method for placing an alternate on a team.

As of now, we have, drumroll please..... 117 players signed up.
58 teams and one player that would be happy to fill out any team.
There are several players that have signed up a team, yet have not
indicated who their partner will be. Please let me know who your
partner is, ASAP, because I have to draw up the pairings and tee
  assignments very soon.

For those teams that do not provide me a catchy name , I have
arbitrarily provided you with a name. If you don't like the name, let
me know what you want the real name to be.

Finally got to play S.M. Sunday. What a monster. Weather wasn't the
greatest but played pretty well. Not too many Driver-wedges. Greens
took a little getting used to (3 putted the 1st 2 ;*( !!!!) but after
that had a pretty good round. It sure plays loooong from all the way
    back!!
2 or 3 under sounds like a pretty good score for the SCC II. Hope the
    fall weather holds for us.
Whoever can hit it where they want it has a good chance. So forget it
    Slappy and Snappy!!!!

    Look forward to the 15th.

    Hi Golfers,

Hmmmm... -2 -5 what's it going to take to win THIS year???

Well last year taught me a lesson about the talent this tourny
brings together. Last year I thought even par would take it,
I mean after all, we do WORK full time right?? WRONG !
Looking over the list of entries in this years tourny is
very intimidating... I know a few of the combatants and
I wouldn't be surprised if we see some awesome scoring. Sky Meadow
is a tough course, but in a two man scramble with this crowd?
You better keep on birdieing! ;)

So, when does the cermonial verbage begin ???

( the Lemon-stirs are going to kick butt !)

    Hey Gene ,

How'd you know the Lemon-stirs got their name from celebrating
their victories with a shot of Quervo Gold a little salt and
    	a lemon slice ?? !!!

Gene,

After watching you perform last Thursday, all I can say is your
partner better have a GREAT day. But of course, as you well know, the
same applies to my partner. Thank God we didn't team up! I can see it
now...

"Geez, OB! Sorry, Gene."

"That's OK, Tom..." "Damn! I pulled it!"

"What's the rule here, Gene? Do we both play a provisional?"

Now Walta, he's a straight shooter. Thank God he can't putt!

    Tom,

How true...! Our partners will have their work cut out for them if
we play like we did last Thursday...! Hopefully we both got all those
bad shots out of our systems, plus we now know the course layout a
little better... Who knows we just might be able to help our partners
out on a shot or two... ;-)

    Peter,

I thought the same thing about the Lemon-stirs name...

    Walta,

That wasn't quite the same rumor that I had heard...

Regards and good luck to all (but sorry to say the best you will do is

    Pete,Tom,Gene,

Allright, so maybe the name Lemon-stir came from the fact we
both live in Leominster.... so. We will still celebrate
    	the same way ;) !

Geeesh, you guys are bad, here we go with the "I can't play
golf story" ... trying to lower the pressure ??? Ha ! I
happened to have been there when, a Mr. Davis stuck a 2 iron
to an uphill pin at Marlboro's 9th, some 200+ yards away,
only to make birdie after hitting a terrible tee-shot.
And Gene, of all people... the man who hits a driver 280+
yards without breaking a sweat? Who STOLE a greeny from me
on a par 3 after sinking a 30 footer, then halved/won? the match
on the back nine when he chipped in on 18 for a birdie !

Don't talk to me about how poorly your playing ... we'll see
    	at the 19th !

I'll buy both you guys a beer if either of you don't break
    	par...

The BB's have a better shot this year than last. My partner is
playing great, shooting the low gross (82) at the warm-up after having
never seen Sky Meadow. I shot my best round of the year last week, a 78
at Trull. I'm predicting we'll play well...definitely under par!!

The ultimate prize for winning the Challenge Cup for both the men's
and women's divisions will be the Challenge Cup trophy. Winning "the Cup"
is a difficult feat and should be recognized as a major achievement.
There will be four Challenge Cup trophies, one for each winning team
member. Each trophy will be engraved with the names of the winners from
previous years to highlight the achievement of past winners.

This is the second year for the Challenge Cup Tournament. The
field has grown to approximately 120 players. It is important to note that
the spirit of the Challenge Cup has not changed, that is to hold a scratch
scramble tournament where handicaps are not used to determine the winner.
This is also why we play very challenging courses, such as at Marlboro CC
last year and Sky Meadow CC this year. However, because of the expanded
and diverse interest in the Challenge Cup we will also be expanding the
prize categories this year.

There will be both team and several individual prizes. Beyond the
Challenge Cup tropies, all other prizes will be in the form of cash. The
prize categories are listed below. Good luck everyone, and most
importantly, HAVE FUN!! See you at the course....

I won't be giving a hole by hole description. Peter Stopera did a
super job in an earlier reply. He's right on for every hole. My
overall advice would be to stay below the cup on the greens and
    to avoid the penalty strokes!

     Directions to Sky Meadows.

Real easy to get to. Take Rte. 3 north. Take Exit #1 after you
cross into New Hampshire. It is the Spit Brook Rd. exit. Go west
for about a mile. The course entrance is on the left. You will be
going through a security gate where you get a pass. Follow the
road past the holes and condos for about 1/4 mile. Pro shop and
1st tee will be on your left, parking lot is directly opposite
in the woods on the right.

    Hi,

I was just wondering if it's too late to add a longest drive
catagory for women. I've been talking to some of the women
about having our own pool. Are the cach prize money coming
    	from the pool?

     Eunhwa,

Jeff will be on vacation right up until the tournament, so I'll be
answering any questions regarding the prizes. The long drives apply
for both men and women. On one of the long drive holes (#12), the
red markers appear to be a good 100 yards ahead of the blues. This
should enable the women to compete for the long drive. The other
hole I'm not sure, Peter can you help?

I should check the scorecard first!

#6 The reds are 51 yards ahead of the blues.
#12 The reds are 140 yards ahead of the blues!

#6 is considered a position tee shot from the blues so many of the
men probably will be hitting fairway woods, long irons off the tee.
My opinion is that Jeff selected the proper holes for long drives, in
that both men and women should be able to compete for them.

Thanks for the quick reply, Rick. Gee, I know one of the women
in the teams who can hit over 220 yds. That means you guys will
    have to hit 220 + 140 = 360! Even Walta can't hit that far ;)

We are in need of one more player to round out the field for Challenge
Cup II. There are now 57.5 teams ready and rarin' to go. An odd number
of teams, presents a slight problem in that I'd have to ask one of the
pro shop folks to play and serve as a spotter.

So....if you would like to play in what is shaping up to be , the
tournament of the year, let me know! The player looking for a partner
is a DECcie, so we would allow a non-DEC type person to play.

Sheesh. Less then a week to go until Challenge Cup time, and it's
awfully quiet in here. Must be more than a few CCII competitors
fine tuning their games at the local links. It will all be in vain,
as the BB's will emerge from the ashes (from last year), spring forth
with vigor and amazing play, and stun the rest of the field with
a resounding victory. The "cups" will rest lovingly and snugly in
the arms of messrs. Burke and Blaisdell for the ensuing year. Eat
your hearts out, all you also-rans out there!

Rick and Jeff are geared up as usual. Jeff my advice is to get Rick
mad, he is the only golfer that can play when angry. But it looks like
a day for the putters; stay out of trouble and try to sink a few.
Sounds like from Pete's description that long hitters may lose some of
    their edge to accurate players.

One rule question which is based on USGA which I don't have handy and
that pertains to dropping the ball in areas which have a steep slope,
impediments etc. Sometimes the player is allowed to place after
    certain number of retries.

It was fun. I'm just glad I didn't break any windows on the condos
on #12, fortunately my tee shot hit the roof!!!!!
Congrats to the winners, you guys get the coveted cup for a year.

Great time, even though the course got the best of my partner and I.
Thanks Rick, Jeff, Gene, and Dave for organizing the mighty event.
(And thanks to Rich Luciano for taking the bee sting for me. 8^)

I must protest about one thing, however (there's one in every crowd).
As a member of the Studettes, I would have preferred to see OUR final
score posted as "somewhere over 99." What the men's high score failed
to show was that a duo of the male persuasion had the high score.
"Somewhere over 108" would have been more appropriate ;-).

Thanks again guys.

    HI,

AWESOME day or what ! Everything ran smooth, (except my swing )
thanks to Rick ,Gene, and Jeff... and the food was excellent
    	thanks to Dave "Sully".

Pete Stopera was a gracious host , and it was excellent of him
to allow all us hackers to play such a beautiful course.

If anyone found any Titliest golf balls... please let me know.
I lost about a dozen somewhere between the 1st and 18th.

I had a great time thanks to everyone who worked hard to organize the
event! Thanks Rick, for including women!!!

Judy, Patty and Wendy from Monoosnock CC club definitely want to play
again next year and bring along more women. That will be great because
we will have a bigger pool money to compete for!

Congratulations Laura and Wendy for an awsome score, 79! Even if the
Fatal Fems, Judy and I, turned a few of those 16 bogies into pars we
couldn't have come close to your score ;)

Rick & Co,

Great event. Thanks. I've played in a lot of outings, but none better.
Good format, good course, good weather, good folks. The only problem
was that I should have come as a spectator, rather than as a
participant. What number were those balls of yours, Walta? If anyone
finds a #1, #4, or #7, it's probably mine. In fact, my first tee shot,
on the 4th, sailed into private property and hid somewhere beneath a
leaf or branch.

(The greens fees are only a small portion of the cost of playing that
course.)

But even with all the lost balls and lost opportunities, we had a
great time. And looking forward to next year.

Tom

Got me on that one. The men's team "The Holey Trojans", shot
a 122. It was a long day and night yesterday. Sorry.

There are several people, who, knowing what I went through the
last couple of weeks regarding this tournament, are having a big
     chuckle over this one!

Here are some of the statistics generated from this year's Challenge Cup
tournament. We had 56 teams (112 players). From the scores, Sky Meadows
was a more difficult course than Marlboro. You have to attribute it to
the fact that Sky offers a lot more trouble off the tee.

The front nine plays slightly more difficult than the back. What was
amazing to me, was that the par 3 2nd hole played as the most difficult
hole on the course. The next most difficult was the nasty 16th. The
easiest hole was the par 3 8th, with the short par 4 17th, close behind.

The tournament's only eagle was recorded by the team of 'ACE' (Dave
Sullivan and Bill Muth), on the par 5 14th hole. The monster par 3
11th, did not register 1 birdie.

The eagle was quite a treat after the day we had. Bill muth chiped
it in from just off the fringe. In the tradition of a true scramble
we used Bill's tee shot (A monster) my second shot a lefty fade
taking the shortcut around the tree-line to the right and almost my
chip which burnt the cup. This warmed it up for Bill's the went
    straight in.

if there was one factor not mentioned which contributed to higher
scores is was hitting out of wet rough by those not used to it.

conditions in the morning were excellent for low scores.

do any predominantly twilight players encounter problems playing in
    daylight?

what I am getting at was summed up by a remark made by Sam Snead about
Ted Williams which I could not fathom at the time but now understand
    well

"[With his eyesight he would have made an outstanding golfer]"
I think Sam was referring to the ability to read greens but I think
good eyesight is a very underrated factor in good golf and it becomes
very apparent in bright fall sunlight conditions.
