42.0. "THE CALLAWAY SYSTEM" by HBO::BLAISDELL (Following the yellow brick road) Wed Sep 17 1986 18:46

I am trying to organize a charity golf tourney and need some
ideas for handicapping the event. I think Calloway is the way to
go, however, I don't have the method at my fingertips. Help !

The latest edition of GOLF magazine has a good description of
the Calloway system. It includes a lookup table and a few special
rules. Look towards the back of the mag (it's on a special page
where they also talk about the leaf rule and a few other oddities).

I can't describe it here - it is more than a bit bizarre. However,
it must work well because it is the #1 method of handicaping those
    without USGA handicaps!

Hope you find it and good luck with your tourney!

Thanks Eric! I've used a modified Calloway before but with some
complaints so I wanted to go to the real thing. Hope I can describe
it in 2,000,000 words or less if someone should ask me tournament
    day (they always do!).

42.3spelled CALLAWAY, I always thought it was callo...GUMDRP::GAUDETTEWed Oct 08 1986 16:217
I have a copy of the USGA Handicap Manual, which contains the official
version of the Calloway system. I can send you hard copy if it
is not too late. Personally though, I prefer the best ball or scramble
format, as with Calloway you don't have any idea how you did or
how you are doing as you are playing.

Using the table below, find your gross score for a 18 hole round.
Find the number of "worst holes" you can deduct and the adjustment
number. The worst holes must be taken from holes 1 - 16. Total the
worst holes and that is your handicap prior to adjustment. Apply the
adjustment to find the real handicap to be used in calculating your
net score. Confused? Good....so am I......

For example. I shoot an 82 the day of the tournament. I lookup to
the table and find that I must pick my 1 1/2 worst
holes in holes 1 - 16. My worst hole was a 7 and my
next worst hole was a 6. So far my handicap is 10.
                  7 + (6 * .5) = 10. Next I look down the column my
gross score is on and find my adjustment number. It
is -1, so I deduct 1 from the 10 handicap to get a
real handicap of 9. My net score is calculated to be
                  a 73 (82 - 9).

                     SCORE DEDUCT

Sorry about the delay in answering your question. The Callaway
as described in 42.4 is the universally accepted method for
handicapping tournaments that have players without handicaps.
However, club pros usually set up and run the tournaments to
be held for the club membership. They may choose to use a
variation of the Callaway for the member/guest tournaments, which
is what you may have run across.
If you went to a course, and asked the pro for documentation on
the Callaway, what he would give you is what you have seen in here.

PS. Gene, when you get back from your vacation, which I'm sure was
24 hours a day of golf ;^) , could you retitle this topic with
the correct spelling of Callaway. I'm the original author of
42.0 but get the "no privilege" message when I try to change
       it. Thanks.

Looking for a computerized version of the Callaway system.

I am involved in a couple of group golf outings this year and the
people running the show are looking for an easy way to calculate the
golf scores with the Callaway system. I have heard that outings have
used PC's and Laptops with a DOS Callaway program - they just enter the
    scores and produce the results.

Does anyone know of or have information about getting access to a DOS
    based Callaway program ?

Appreciate any help in this hunt.

I have a program that runs under VMS or MS-DOS that calculates
a multi-day version of your choice of tournaments, 1) Handicapped
2) Peoria, and 3) Calloway.

It's fairly easy to use, you simply list all the people's names,
you can group them into teams if you like, and it will keep track
of their scores over days or a single day, sort and print out results.

If you want a copy send me mail.

This program was used last year at the Digital Southwest Tournament
which is a competition between Colorado Springs, Albuquerqe, Phoenix,
Denver and Tempe.

I had a IBM-AT and a DEC LA75 printer sitting at the course. It worked
with no problems.
