1739.0. "NEPGA" by PMROAD::VARLEY () Thu Jul 15 1993 13:43

Went to the NEPGA at Shaker Hills yesterday pm. Heard a lot about SH,
but I had never been there. Due to the lateness of my arrival, I
decided to follow one group around the back 9. I figured, "what the
hell, these guys can all play, I'll get a better feel for the golf
course." I sure did - Yickk!!

Nice place, but I sure was underwhelmed by the course. The greens were
disgusting! Lots of brown and bare spots - slow, very bumpy and grainy.
If they were even worse last year (which caused the last 2 rounds to be
transferred to Wachusett and Oak Hill), I can't imagine it. Apparently
they had to re-do 14 greens, and I know this is a big, costly deal.
However, that being duly acknowledged, this course was NOT ready for a
tournament, although most fairways were very nice. IMO, it was also NOT
ready for public play. Let me explain. This is a highly touted course -
with high (for our area) greens fees. If it were cheaper, it would be a
different story, but for big bucks, you should get decent greens.
Actually, it probably is o.k. for the public, but, be warned! The
    greens are generally lousy!

As far as the layout - I was unimpressed with the 9 holes I saw. Kind
of pretty, but it basically is a hit a one iron off every tee (They had
the tees about 2/3 back yesterday) kind of place. Maybe I was in a bad
mood, but SH ain't on my dance card in the near future. Go to Sterling,
Sky Meadow or New England CC - better value.

I played there twice in the couple of weeks before the NEPGA. For a
player of my meagre abilities, I had a lot of fun. It sounds like the
greens had gone downhill in one week. They weren't great when I played
but I don't recall brown or bare spots. However the par 5 15th has an
emergency "green" due to some serious work being done on the real one.
I can imagine that that one still looked lousy when you were there. By
emergency green, I mean that they just sank a hole in the middle of the
fairway and put a flag in it!

1739.2Lousy conditions!!BUSY::PEASLEEWed Aug 04 1993 17:008
I played SH two days after the tourney, the third time this year, and
was disgusted. I'd expected the best conditions they could achieve so
soon after the event. Instead I found the greens on 13 and 14
COMPLETELY REMOVED!! The fact that SH's touchtone course conditions
speel doesn't mention lousey OR NO greens and that they make no
adjustment to the fee is very frustrating.

I agreee with the point about not adjusting the fees when course
conditions are less than adequate. In the pro-shop courses will
hardly ever mention the fact that 'oh, by the way, 3 greens
are temporary, and 4 tees are being played on temporary'. And
you will NEVER hear 'BUT... here's a complimentary ticket for
a drink after the round, or fees are $5.00 off until they grow
    in'.

I guess they kinda gotcha! You wanna play MY COURSE, then pay up!

I agree in general, but couldn't help picking this nit :-)

At Passaconaway CC (southern NH) a few weekends ago we got
half rate because there were 3 temp greens!

I got a deal as Passaconaway(NH) because of those same 3 temp greens on
the front nine. The ranger gave our 4some a 9 hole raincheck.

Sorry for the digression, but I'm playing there this Sunday. What's
    the course like now?

    Bob,

Carol and I played the front nine Tuesday night. It was in really
good shape - you'd never know we'd had a drought, there's no brown
grass anywhere. The only "area under repair" we noticed was a portion
    of the 8th green.

1739.8Passaconaway QETOO::HAYESMon Aug 16 1993 15:495
Passaconaway had 2 temporaries yesterday (4 and 8). NO adjustment
of fees. The Club Championship is this coming weekend (21/22) over
100 golfers (usually this tournement has slow play too).

Played there on Sat., with no temps. Interesting...

Played behind a group of touring pros (at least they thought they were)
for the first nine, and thankfully passed them going to the 10th.

Yes, Saturday some of the people I play with said no temps. The
Proshop said they wanted 4 and 8 to recover for the championship.
The course has been in great shape though. We play everything down
and when in the fairway (the right one or someone elses 8*) you
    don't get a bad lie.
