548.0. "Spring Noters Tournament" by IAMOK::OCONNOR () Mon Mar 13 1989 15:49

SPRING NOTERS TOURNEY - LAST WEEK IN MAY

Is there any interest in a noters tournament the last week in May?
Maybe Thursday (5/25) or Friday (5/26) if available.
We need to have at least twenty men and women enter.
Here are the preliminaries.

I have talked with "The Skoal Bandit" about having a Spring Noters Tournament
at Crumpin Fox. (See Note 463.)
Crumpin Fox is about an hours drive from the Westminster plant.
Entry fee will be around $ 30.00.
That will include green fee and prizes.
Low gross (m&w), low net-Calloway, longest drive (m&w), closest to flag etc.
Riding carts will be optional at extra cost.
There are no pull carts to rent so bring your own if you need one.
Tee times will be around noon.
There is a practice range.
There is lunch service in the clubhouse.
You can sign up individually or in groups. If you are a single we will try
to place you with other golfers in your handicap range.

We welcome beginning golfers as well as single digit handicappers.

If you have any interest in playing please reply (by April 7th ) to this note,
or call me DTN 273-5387 (leave voice mail message if I do not answer) or send
mail to oconnor::dissrv or Richard OConnor @ VRO.
Include your system address, DTN and handicap.

Depending on the interest in the tournament (20 or more), a decision
will be made to hold or cancel the tournament around mid-April.

Crumpin Fox is in Bernardston, which is where Interstate 91 crosses
into New Hampshire. West of Westminster. We have one person who
is coming from New Bedford, diagonally across the state. The intent
of having the tournament out there is the interest generated by
note 463 and to give some of us the excuse to travel out there.
Some of us do not even need an excuse. Eight down and twelve to

Congratulations to Gene Kelley for walking away with top prize &
score in the Spring Tournament. He played a fine round by keeping
the ball in play (and his woods in his bag), not losing any
strokes around the green, and playing an occasional unintended
layup. Well done, Kelley, and thanks to Rich O'Connor for
       putting it together.

Crumpin Fox is a good course to play -- you're rewarded for
thinking as much as for shooting, the layout is attractive, and
the clubhouse facilities are excellent for a course that's open to
       the public.

Which isn't to say that this golfer doesn't have his usual share
of grumbles: the course wasn't nearly in good enough shape to play
'em down, and it was a long way to go for a 9-hole course. All in
all, though, it was an excellent day and tournament, and the only
losers were the people who found reasons and excuses not to show
       up.

Thank you Rich for your hard work in organizing and running the
tournament. You did a great job!

Any day I can get an extra round in is a bonus for me. So
after a few early hole frustrations, I was determined to have a
good time. My troubles were around the greens. Like most
Robert Trent Jone's designed courses, this one required precise
iron play as the fairways are narrow, the greens elevated and
well bunkered, and of course, the strategically placed water hazards.
My real gripe is that the par 5's really never gave you a choice whether
to layup or go for the green in two (laying up was the *only* smart
   thing to do).

And on a personal note, I just made my tee time. I got caught in a
massive traffic jam on rte. 495 in Westford (they shut down 495!!) and
had a stressful ride up. It took me a few holes to settle down. But,
I was able to give my 2 iron a good workout, got a very valuable putting
tip from Mr. O'Connor(after the round of course), and won some greatly
needed balls for finishing 2nd to Mr. Kelley.

Finally, thanks to Dan, Tony and Stu for putting up with me and
patiently waiting as I took my usual 3-4 shots around the greens.

I can't figure out why you guys played 'em down at "the Fox", because
members don't!! We recognize that the expanded irrigation has scarred
the course temporarily, as has winter kill. We'll be replacing all
current fairways with pure bentgrass in august anyway.
Hope y'all come back, and as an aside to Tavo, the guy you were
talking to in the bar (Lary of Northfield) just shot 71 there with
6 birds. Is he a player?
True, it is currently a 9 holer, but if you played gold/black tee
combos, you'd have seen 2 markedly different courses. By the way,
you CAN go for the 5's from the gold, especially on #5 (i made it

    of #...

Number 5 - Well, I took a look at my landing area for the driver
and all I saw was a 15 yard wide fairway with a lateral
hazard (or jungle) on the right and a clump of trees
on the left with minimal rough. Sure you can go
for it, but a triple will be a popular score.

Number 8 - Um, what about that big tree in the middle of the
fairway guarding the entrance to the green? Sure,
go for it if your into making trick shots.

I guess if I was a member there, I'd go for the par 5's in
two for yucks once in awhile, but for money or in a tournament
       there would be no way.

    Jack, Rick,

Are we talking about the same holes...? Hitting down the right on

Like to add my thanks to Richard for setting up the tournament -
also appreciated the hints on how to play the course from "The
Skoal Bandit" - I didn't use any of them. Tavo can confirm that!

He can also attest to the NEW method I taught him as to how to
play the ninth hole. You lay up to the pond, belly a wedge into
two skips on the water, roll through the bunker and end up with
a fifteen foot putt. How else would you play it?

A thanks goes out to Rich for the fine job running the tournament.
I enjoyed the course and the club house facilities are first
rate. The locker and showers down stairs rival a good private
    	club.

I have to attest to the metal toughness Rick displayed. Going
from the parking lot to the first tee is never easey. After
struggling on the first few holes you pulled together and put
in a fine round. It was a added pleasure following the May 20th
round at Stow South where in the same situation a member walked
    	off the course after nine.

As for my round, my putter was on. My guess is about 15 putts
on the front. What I learned of the course on the front seemed
to help in shot selection on the back. Selection is one thing,
transfering it to the club is another.

A added thanks to Jack for pointing out sights of interest in
the western part of the state. Went to the Clark Museum in
Williamstown, MA. and Hilldee (Todd Lincoln estate) in Manchester,
VT. I got a look at the Equinox C.C. and Inn. The course and bad
weather brought Marshal Fields to his death. He was a vacationing
guest of Todds at the time. Todd, an avid golfer in the late
1800's cut a 300 yard fairway in front of his estate so he could
work on his game (no mention of his handicap). With the cost
and time of maintaining a green at home the thought of a fairway
crossed my mind. A little easier for Todd to say with 500 acres.

I enjoyed very much the outing and the chance to play a different
course, even if my score didn't reflect my sentiments, so another
    thank you to Rich.

And even if Stan showed me the way to get on on the 9th, I won't try
to put that shot in my bag! Our maybe I will try it this evening
since that are the kind of shots sometimes needed when playing our
    league's 3 club tournament.

548.49A great day!!CIMNET::DSULLIVANThu Jun 01 1989 20:0010

I myself had a GREAT !! day even if the only thing I did was hit
an 8 iron with 2 iron loft to 8ft of the par 3 (closet to pin hole) and
    subsequently make my only "2".
Thanks to Richard for putting it together and pairing me up with
a great guy (Fran Merlone) Thanks again for driving Fran. Congrats
    to all who attended!!

The shot that you beat was a perfectly-lofted 9-iron that bounced
once, hit the flagstick (giving momentary heart failure to the
golfer), and skittered 12 feet away. You're on my list, Sullivan.

As a post script, I was talking with our Pro Ron Beck yesterday,
and he was very impressed at how well the tournament was organized
(hats off to Rich). Unfortunately, at the other end, a bunch of
scheduling conflicts (lessons, etc.) resulted in the gal working
in the pro shop not being completely informed about the tourney.
Hope no inconvenience resulted, as she is a super person, and very
competent who helps out occasionally. She said the DEC folks were
    great!
I don't routinely play in stuff like this, so I missed out on a
nice event, but I'm glad you all had a great time. Re: my note on
the par 5's, the system here blipped, and part of it was lost. I'll
try to clarify here. Our rule of thumb is that on #5, if you can
get to the end of the left hand sand trap, (I can do it from the
Blues occasionally, but not the Blacks) and you're on the left side
of the fairway, go for the sand trap on the right of the green.
On #8, if the tees are up, kill it down the right hand side and
you can sometimes pump it up the alley between the woods and big
tree (Lary and I hit 4 & 5 irons recently, but the tees were UP!!).
As you all said, most of the time we lay up on #5, and nearly all
    of the time on #8.
By the way, I walked the new 9 a few days ago, and it is so scary
that we'll be delighted to get to our current 9. I think it's at
least 3 shots harder... Come on back up!
