27.0. "Handicapping Program Wanted" by BAXTA::STEVENS_JIM () Wed Aug 06 1986 17:16

    Hello, I am a first time note writer in this Notes File.

    I am a true hacker (golf hacker that is, my security people
    get nervous when anyone even breaths hacker) in that I can go
    out and shoot fantastic one day and the next double or triple
    bogey every hole..

    But enough of this (it just makes me want to go back and read
    5 years worth of Golf Digest).

    I am looking for a Golf Handicap Program that will allow me to
    keep handicaps for at least 100 people. The program must follow
    the USGA handicapping system (this means it must have some sort
    of database). I plan on issuing USGA Handicap cards to the members
    of the Golf League up here in Augusta MAINE.

    Anybody out there have one ?

    Buy the way, if anyone ever goes to the Margaree Valley in Nova
    Scotia, you must play the Margaree Golf Course. It is very interesting
    to say the least.

	(re: .-1)

	 Why don't you use topic 19 to tell us about some holes on the
	 Margaree (sp?) course?

	 I haven't played golf in N.S yet, but I've played quite a few
	 Ontario and Quebec courses...

27.2Any Handicaps?BPOV09::FARWELLBOBThu Mar 05 1987 16:5012
    Since the Golf season in New England is fast approaching and we
    have a new league starting up here in Marlboro, I would like to
    renew this long forgotten request for a handicapping system. We
    will be running a small league of about 24 people and need some
    sort of system (preferably something that can be run on Rainbow)
    to keep the competition interesting and friendly. I will also be
    interested in systems without a software base.

    Any help out there?

    Bob

27.3There was a Rainbow package...CGOS01::MHAMMELMaury Hammel, WNO SISThu Mar 05 1987 20:5513

    There is a third-party software package that runs on the Rainbow for
    keeping USGA Handicaps. I forget exactly what it was called, but it
    was marketed by us as part of the DCS (Digital Classifed Software)
    program when the Rainbow first came out (Our unit even had a copy of
    the thing in our office at one time).

    I'll dig around and see if I can come up with the name of the package
    and/or the company. I'll post here if I come up with it.

    Maury...

    	This is not an answer to your request but it may help. A few
    years ago I was asked to help start a golf league here in Burlington.
    Since it was mostly going to be high handicappers, I wanted to put
    in something simple, avoided head to head match play (since most
    people didn't understand that), and avoid controversy over adjusting
    scores. I used a quota system. You got 1 point for a bogey,2 for
    par, etc. Your handicap was 18 - The # of points you scored in
    9 holes. The system worked very well for the 2 years that I was
    in the league. It was quick, simple and the person that did the
    handicaps didn't have to listen to would-be hustlers. I understand
    that they still use the same system now. It might be something
    to consider.

	I ran across the following in The Software Labs' Summer/Fall, 1993
	catalog. This is a shareware catalog with many programs to choose
	from. Shareware ranges from very basic to really good. I'll post
	a review once I order this and play around with it a bit...

Yes, there are several. And here is one. I don't remember where I it, but
I'll put in my public directory a program called Golf Analyst that gives
statistics and handicap calculations.

locations is:

STOWOA::USR05:[ODIAZ.PUBLIC]GOLFA.ZIP

I will leave it there for the rest of the week.

You may also look in the net for other programs.

    Gee, I found a typo. The correct file name is GOLFA95.ZIP. So the
    correct location is;

    STOWOA::USR05:[ODIAZ.PUBLIC]GOLFA95.ZIP

This one is pretty good. It lets you enter scores for rounds of 9 (ie. it
lets you NOT enter all 18 holes for a score). You can also record
additional info about each hole (e.g. how many putts, what club used on
tee, what hazards you encountered, if there was a penalty, etc). Offers 4
different (and customizable) methods for calculating your handicap, too.
I like it!

Uhh... Thanks for making this available, but I don't see how learning to
plat the guitar is going to help my golf game. :-)
