753.0. "Overlook CC" by NSG018::STOPERA () Thu Sep 07 1989 15:25

Do any of you Green Medow players out there know anything about the new
course in Hollis, NH that's being build. I'm building a house about 2
minutes from there and drive by every day, I see that they have grass
growing there. I was looking for information on membership (if it
    goes private).

I would suggest that you contact Phil Friel, or someone at Green
Meadows. At one time they had a sign-up sheet for people that
    were interested in information.
753.2Overlook CC opened Saturday VMSDEV::MALONEYTue Jul 03 1990 18:0818

I played it this morning, and it is a gem of a course.
The fairways are tree-lined--the land must have been wooded
before instead of a farm. Some of the holes are just pretty
    to look at.

It's not easy, but it's fair. You don't have to hit huge
drives and fairway shots to score (I'm judging it against
    Passaconaway in Litchfield...)

    9 holes are open. $12 for 9 weekdays, $15 weekends. $25
for 18 on weekends. They're taking tee-time reservations
every day of the week. Phone is (603)465-2909 (the number
    from directory assistance is wrong)

The newspaper said they're going private in 1992. I hope they
    stay public.

could someone leave some rough directions on where in Hollis it is -
near 130 or near 122 etc?

I think it is on Rt. 111 just east of Rt. 122...

Yes it is on rt 111 about 1/2 mile north of where the Nashua river
intersects rt 111. The golf course is on the left heading towards
Nashua. The entrance is marked but you really don't see the course from
Rt 111. Some people know the restaurant called the nest. Well Overlook is 1/2
a mile further north than the nest. I played it as well and I recommend
it as it is a great layout. Some of it borders the Nashua river and it
    is fair but challenging.
753.6Go before the crowds find outCHRLIE::HUSTONMon Jul 09 1990 17:0326

I have played Overlook twice, it is a very nice layout, though not
very tough, and very short if you hit the ball straight. As mentioned
all holes are tree lined so wild drives hurt alot. The course itself
is in excellent condition, the only complaint I would have are that the
greens and fairways have fairly long grass (greens are very slow).
This could be a direct result of the grass being young so they are
going to leave it longer to help it grow.

There are also a couple of long walks between holes, the first 5 holes
are all next to each other, after that there are long walks to the
next tee, up some real nice hills (going to #8). At one point you
finish the hole (#6) and you are just about next to the #7 green, you
then have to walk the length of #7 to get to a tee.

A fun course to play, good for the ego, never before have I hit a par
3 that was about 185 and hit a 9 iron onto the green, good for the ego,
but I really should mention that the green is 80 feet below the tee.

I recommend the course, its fun, nice to walk and look at.

Not yet crowed either, played there Saturday afternoon with my wife,
we got there at 4:00, just about an empty parking lot.

753.7i didn't like itNSG018::STOPERAWed Jul 11 1990 16:2913
I didn't like the course at all, the place reminded me too much of
green medows, the greens were awful, and also bigger than stowe's
greens, i though he could do alot more with the land, #1 a par 5 is a
nice hole, but #2 and #7 are dumb, 2 iron - sand wedge hole, someone is
going to get killed coming off the 6th green, never played a hole where
you had to walk from the green to the tee, then back to the green, i
thought it was stupid design on the par 3 holes, very little teeing
ground, those tees are already chewed up and it only been open 2 weeks.

my wife, my brother and myself were very dispointed with the course,
maybe the back nine will be better, i hope so

You sure closed in on it's weaknesses pretty fast but it sounds like
you doth protest too much. Overlook is not even close to a layout
similar to Green Meadows. It is a fair challenge of your golfing skills
as it is today because you need accuracy and sound striking of the ball
throughout because of tightness of the fairways and well situated
hazards. Bye the way I think it is a very aesthetic layout.

753.9#2 is a joke, I like #7 thoughCHRLIE::HUSTONWed Jul 11 1990 17:0912

Peter has some good points about some of the holes, I agree with him
about #2, but disagree about 7, I like the 7th hole, it is short, but
tree lined and the green is severly elevated if you hit your tee shot
    to far.

#2 on the other hand is a joke, they should have made it a par 3.
I hit a 3 iron off the tee and was about 10 yds short of the green,
they should have shortened it up and made it a par 3.

But isn't it already a par 3? Sounds like you can hit it with a
2 iron or 5 wood which means its about in the 210 - 240 yard range,
unless you're hitting your long irons incorrectly. ;^)

  re: a few others

And why all the disparaging remarks about Green Meadows? Other than
some of the poorer greens around and a couple of ridiculously designed
holes, it isn't that bad a layout.

i wasn't attacking green medows, i just though some of the holes at
overlook were similar to green medows, #3 at overlook is almost
the same hole as the par 5 at green medow along the river, #4 at
overlook is just like the par 4, 2 holes after above par 5

can't reach #2 because of trees, i guess you could play a big snap hook
    to get there

here what i would have done there

cut the size of all the greens in half, put slopes in the greens, every
    green is flat

    add alot more tees

keep #1 the same - nice hole

make #2 a par 3 over the water

move the tee back on #3 50 yards

#4 is ok, but i would have added a fairway bunker

#5 - move the green up, right next to the pond, put that pond in play

#6 - add slopes into the green

#7 - move the green back 50 yards, up the hill, or make it a par 3, it
would be a great par 3 from the high handicappers tees

    #8 - add more tees

#9 - put some slopes in the green, nice hole

Rick,

What did I shoot? I never played the course. I just stuck my nose in
where it doesn't belong again. You may have meant Peter or Bob.

    Rick
753.16I shot 38 and 40CHRLIE::HUSTONThu Jul 12 1990 13:2517

I agree with alot of Peter's improvements. Especially the greens and
#2 and #3. For those of you who don't know, #3 is a par 5 that is very
short, it is something like 465 from the blue tees. If the tee was
moved back 50 yards or so it would be nice, now it is easily reached in
2 with an iron second shot, but don't miss to the right.

As for #2, when I played it, I hit a 3 iron over the corner of the
trees, came up just short, I should mention that off the tee I hit
    my 3 iron about 230 - 240.

I will repeat though, I enjoy playing the course, it is a nice course
with some nice holes. Wouldn't want to play it alot , but occasionally
    it is fun.

With all the hype of it being a plush, private course in the likes
of Vesper, I found the course a big disappointment. The condition
I thought did not compare to Paconaway or Skymeadow when they opened.
Just look at the first tee, it reminded me of Tyngsboro CC. I was
really surprised with all the Friel family has done with public
courses, and the time that has gone into designing this layout,
it really left alot to be desired. Guess it shows all the money
in that family doesn't qualify them as course designers.
753.18I'll take 4 on #2, thanksMKNME::DANIELEMon Nov 12 1990 20:4918
Can't resist adding my 2 cents, having played it a few times now.

I think aesthetically it rivals Stowe, and certainly beats hell
out of Green Meadow and Amherst.

I started playing it in late summer, and by then it was in very
	good shape.

I do think it's fairly easy, but from the blues, I think it's
a reasonable challenge. I don't know how it was set up when you
folks played it, but #2 from the blues requires a carry of at least
200 yds over water, to a narrow landing area, usually requiring
right to left movement. I've seen easier driving holes (like just
about every one at GM, Amherst...)

Just my personal, subjective, meaningless opinion.

Anybody else played the back nine? It opened last weekend, but you
must play all 18 to see it, no going off 10...

I was really disappointed. It's short, crammed into a tight space,
lots of marsh, it's just not very challenging.

18 is a nice finishing hole, but there are just too many 330 yard
	par 4s.
