909.0. "MUSHROOMBURGER OUT" by DPDMAI::VENEZIO () Mon Apr 02 1990 15:50

    The Masters has been saved. With the recent announcement of Brent
    Musburger being fired at CBS, we no longer have to sit through those
    unemotional interviews in the Eisenhower Cabin during the last hours of
    the Masters.

    CBS can finally leave the interviews to the knowledgable Tom Weiskoff,
     Pat Summerall, and Ken Venturi. I've always felt Brent was a wasted
    addition to the CBS crew and was their only because he invited himself.

    Now if we can only get rid of Bryant Gumbel, excite Vin Scully to come
    back and leave Johnny Miller in place, NBC may have a place in PGA
    coverage.

    How do you rate the TV announcers?

    Regards,
    Ken

    I like Gumbel I was surprized he is a pretty good golfer and seems
    to know what he is talking about

    Jim Nance replaced Brent last year at the Master's and I believe has
    the position as primary announcer of the Master's. A good move on
    CBS's part - Jim is good, knows the game and loves the Master's.

909.3Scully for DogcatcherASABET::VARLEYWed Apr 04 1990 14:254
    I like Gumbel and johnny Miller (and Gary McCord). I ABSOLUTELY DETEST
    Vin Scully, who knows nothing about golf, talks endlessly and tries to
    be "quotable" every time he opens his yap! Nantz was a good player at
    U. of Houston and is more than adequate as an announcer.

    Vin Scully - The absolute worst. I'm sure he graduated Broadcast School
    at the bottom of his class....

909.9No worse than next to last in his class...HKFINN::F_MCGOWANZoot who?Wed Apr 25 1990 16:4616
    -1: Nah, he had to have been ahead of Chris Schenkel! But then,
    I've never heard Schenkel do golf (a blessing, I'm sure). I'm not
    sure why there's so much antipathy for Bryant Gumbel; probably has
    to do with his perceived arrogance (the infamous Willard Scott memo
    for instance). I don't find him markedly better or worse than any
    of the other commentators (with the exception of Gary McCord, who
    consistently cracks me up with comments like "grow hair, ball,"
    "full flaps," etc). And Johnny Miller's been a breath of fresh air,
    too. The most overwrought of the bunch has to be Ben Wright, who's
    always nattering on about someone's "tragic" bogey or "fatal"
    misclubbing, etc. You'd think he was talking about world peace!

    And what value Ken Venturi's commentary adds is not apparent to me,
    either. Oh, well, one man's meat and so forth.

	The best golf announcer of all time was Henry Longhurst. It wasn't
	what he said, but what he didn't say. If the leader hit the ball
	into a pond to drop out of the lead he would say something like,
	"There you have it" and shut up!

    Musburger was credited by Golf World magazine with the second dumbest
    question ever asked by a golf reporter (at the Masters): It happened
    the year Nicklaus had to withdraw because of back spasms.

    Brent's question was, "Gee, Jack, couldn't you have asked for a
    later tee time?"

    The all-time worst question was asked following the par-3 tournament,
    the winner of which had scored consecutive holes-in-one: "So tell
    me, when was the last time you made back to back aces?" The person
    who asked this has long been forgotten.

909.14Lampley dismissed please!!DPDMAI::VENEZIOPerfect Practice Makes PerfectMon Mar 15 1993 15:3717
    NBC did it again, they came up with another "talk too much" announcer
    IMHO.

    Jim Lampley is another inna long line of Golf announcers for NBC that
    don't make it. He wouldn't shut up all weekend. Even made predictions
    on the outcome of a puttt while the ball was in route.

    Johnny Miller deserves better. He one of the best and keeps getting
    stuck with these dwebes.

    BTW, where is Musberger? Has anyone seen or heard him? Is he doing Mud
    wrestling or tractor pulls? Maybe the WWF?

    Lampley must go or learn the basics of golf broadcasting. This is not
    boxing.
