2121.0. "Who will be a "major" player in 1997?" by STOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::Diaz (Octavio) Wed Mar 12 1997 20:40

Since there is snow in the ground, I need something else to do
related to golf. (And I thought that we were going to have a super
early spring!)

I'll continue with the GOLF magazine web site surveys, the one on
what we would like to ban from the course seems to have had some
interest.

Here is the last one done, I won't enter their results so not to
bias this audience:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

       Who will become a "major" player in 1997?
       -----------------------------------------

The most likely to win his first professional major in 1997 is:

John Cook
Scott Hoch
Davis Love III
Mark McCumber
Phil Mickelson
Colin Montgomerie
Frank Nobilo
Mark O'Meara
Vijay Singh

Note: We decided to exclude Tiger Woods from this poll and stick
with veteran players.

Our list includes six Americans and three foreigners.

The Americans and the number of PGA Tour events they have won, as
of Feb. 25, 1997: John Cook, 9; Scott Hoch, 7; Davis Love III, 10;
Mark McCumber, 10; Phil Mickelson, 9; and Mark O'Meara, 14.
The three foreigners are Scotland's Colin Montgomerie (0 PGA Tour
wins, but 12 PGA European Tour victories and No. 1 on the European
money list the past four seasons), New Zealand's Frank Nobilo (0
PGA Tour wins but 10 victories around the world, including the
Sarazen World Open in 1995 and '96) and Fiji's Vijay Singh (3 PGA
Tour wins, 17 other victories around the world, including the
South African Open on Feb. 9).

The 26-year-old Mickelson is the only one under 30 on the list.
Cook (1978), O'Meara (1979), and Mickelson (1990) are former U.S.
Amateur champions.

I start. My vote for Mickelson (Hey I'm biased, he's leftie, or at
least he plays leftie). And by the way he didn't get the top votes.

I'll go with John Cook. He's a Ken Venturi disciple and seems to be doing much
better since his wrist problem was diagnosed and fixed a couple of years ago.

    David Duval. His first win will be a major. He seems like he believes
    he's overdue.

     Gotto Go with the Big Man from Scotland. Monty is due, being #1 in
    Europe for last few years. HE just needs to keep his Temper in check
    and continue to hit that wonderful power fade.

2121.5Mark O'Meara stepping up a notchSTRATA::SZEWCZYKTue Mar 18 1997 00:248
    Mark O'Meara got to be there real soon!!!
    He's got a great short game and the nerve to win a Big one too.

    When Tiger pressured him at Peeble Beach he hung tough and beat him.
    I think he's about ready to step up.
    Who knows maybe at the Player Championship.

    Pete Hogan. That's right the guy is awsome. Drives the ball short and
    off line. His iron game is non-exsistent and nobody jabs a putt like he
    does. Look out Tiger Woods there's a new cat in town. Meow.
