2061.0. "Cape Cod Golf" by NETRIX::"palmer_jr@powdml.enet.dec.com" (Bob Palmer Jr.) Tue Jan 23 1996 14:00

Hello All,

Visited the Cape this past weekend and noted that most of the snow
has melted. Does anyone know if any courses will be open this
weekend?

Thanks,

Bob

Re: 2061.0

I know that the Falmouth Country Club was opened
last weekend. I would expect that most clubs on
the outer cape and probably on the lower/inner Cape
to be open this weekend.

I also know that courses on the upper/inner cape
(Holly Ridge, Round Hill, and Barnstable ?? which
are in the Sandwitch area) still had some snow on
them. Albiet a lot less than around here in Nashua.

2061.2Hopefully soon!!!!STOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::ODIAZOctavio DiazTue Jan 23 1996 19:4420
mmmmm.....

The tons of snow took a toll on me and I haven't visited this notesfile in a
while, but I was wondering the same thing: when would courses in the
cape open. I can see some grass out my buiding windows here in OGO.

Tomorrow's forecast is rain, so that may wash out even more snow, so
hopefully they'll open soon.

The only way to find out is call them directly. One that opens as soon as
possible is Hyannis CC. I have an old phone number (from when it used
to be called Iyanough) but it may still be the same: 508-362-2606

I am all tied up this weekend and then leaving for a couple of weeks in a
business trip, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that above freezing weather
temps without any solid precipitation.

The Boston Herald is running the Winter Golf ad in the sports seciton
again. It shows the following as open for play on regulation greens and
    tees.

    Ballymeade CC North Falmouth 508-540-4005
    Bay Pointe CC Onset 508-759-8802
Holly Ridge GC South Sandwich 508-428-5577
    Hyanis GC Hyannis 508-362-2606

It also gives a 1-800-TEE-BALL number for current conditons and
information. If memory serves me correctly the 800 number connects
    to the Hyannis club.

The Holly Ridge course is definitely closed, but the
Driving range & pro shop are open.

I'm sure a lot more courses are open than is listed.

2061.7Some short comments on B. P.STOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::ODIAZOctavio DiazFri Jan 26 1996 20:0615
At this time of the year, I would go out to any course and this one is
OK. The Maynard Golf League has had a couple of outings at Bay
Pointe. It is a nice track, but nothing special. I would call it a
traditonal New England course, not too many hazards, relatively wide
fairways and not too flat. You do have the advantage of being this
side of the Cape bridges.

Being very close to the ocean you do get a lot of wind. I remember a
couple of longish par 3's that we struggle to reach even with a driver
due to head wind.

Enjoy it.

Well, I'm sitting here in Wareham, MA and I just finished
shoveling 12 inches of snow and it's STILL coming down....

So, I think it's safe to say that Cape Cod golf is shut
    	down for a while..!

I was getting ready to spend some time on the links, but

I just came back from a couple of weeks abroad, and found that most of the
snow that fell down 10 days ago is mostly gone.
As a matter of fact, when the plane approached Logan, I couldn't see almost any
snow south of Boston.

Any update on how the Cape is these days?

I can't speak for anything but the upper cape,
and the courses there were closed over the
weekend. There were plenty of Robins around
which indicates to me that the courses will
be reopenning pretty soon.

Jay,

Music to my ears!!!

A weatherman on TV last night had the guts to say that this is the turning point.
For the rest of February (little more than a week), there was no threat of snow,
and come March, it is all uphill!!!

For all not in Northeastern US, it is now close to 50 F (~10 C) and raining and it is
expected to stay that way untill the weekend.

Continue Keeping us posted on conditions over there!

2061.17Hyannis CC reportSTOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::ODIAZOctavio DiazTue Feb 27 1996 12:1621
RE: my note .16

It rained all Saturday morning but we were lucky enough that when we got to
Hyannis CC it had stopped. The sun even came out around 3 PM so it ended
up being a very nice afternoon.

We didn't see almost any snow south of the pike on 495, so we called
Poquoy Brook to try to avoid driving all the way to Hyannis, but got no answer.

There were many other golfers but not as crowded as I thought it would be,
probably due to the rain.

All greens were open, even if some were a little wet. Some par 3 tee boxes
were provisional, plenty of water on the fairways but I came prepared, I wore
my snow shoes, and by now it should be much drier. And you can't beat the
fees: $16.

All in all, great to be out swinging the club, and to top it all I even played to
my handicap.

I played the Cape Cod Country Club on Sunday. Very windy. At one point
a flag stick was bent completely over....

The course conditions were pretty good. Some snow was still visable,
mainly in sand traps. Snow traps???? There were three temporary greens.
These greens were generally protected from the sun. According to the
barkeep these greens were frozzen the day before. The course was
generally dry. No gaping mud puddles were to be found.

Well.. I knew it was too good to be true....

We received another 7-8 inches of wet, heavy snow on Saturday.
Obviously all the courses are now closed , but the cross -country
    	skiing is back in force..!

It looks like it will be cold the remainder of the week, so don't
expect any quick melting... I'll be sure to let you know when
I can see the grass again...

Hang in there.. spring IS coming (just slowly..!)

2061.20Another outing reportSTOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::ODIAZOctavio DiazMon Mar 04 1996 16:1416
I was over the 200 hour limit, so "had" to take Friday off. Courses were
starting to open closer to Boston, but now....

I called Maplegate and they had opened but closed Friday due to frost. New
England CC was closed. I ended up at Poquoy Brook in Lakeville (exit 5 of 495).

Course was in reasonable shape, a couple of temporary greens. They had not
clean it so the ball on the green jumped all over, plus grass was high making
putting a little difficult.

Very few people out there.

I guess now its another couple of weeks at least, and as Jay said, forecast
isn't good for the rest of this week.
