2033.0. "1995 USGA Public Links" by XELENT::MUTH (I drank WHAT? - Socrates) Tue Jul 18 1995 12:58

I'm surprised there isn't a note about the 1995 USGA Men's Public Links
Championship, since it's being held in Stow.

Sports agent leads PubLinx by 2

STOW, Mass. -- Alan Baxter of San Antonio shot a tournament-record
6-under-par 65 Monday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of
qualifying for the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship. Baxter, a
32-year-old sports player agent, broke the tournament mark of 66 set by
Michael Dowd in 1993 at Riverside Dune in Brighton, Colo., and also knocked
three strokes off Stow Acres Country Club's record.

"I drove the ball well,'' said Baxter, who had four birdies and an eagle.
"I was aggressive off the tee and I tried to get the ball down the fairway
so I could hit 7-iron or better to these greens. I feel it's the only way I
could compete with the college kids.''

Aaron Barber, a 22-year senior at the University of Minnesota, opened with
a 67 and Scott Dalesio, 25, of Waterbury, Conn., and Adam Boyd, 19, of
Nashville, Tenn., shot 68s.

The low 64 after Tuesday's second round of qualifying advance to match play.

Which 5-par did they change to a 4? #11?

Yes, the 11th. They also shortened it to 450 yds. In the Mass 4-ball it
was also a par 4 but they left it at 470 yds for that tourney.

    Hi,

    	FYI.
Actually it's the 12th... 10 and 11 are always par fours.

Just watched a group tee off 9... prior groups were hitting it
to roughly 200 yards left into the hole. Well this big guy
gets up and ripped it 310+ all carry to about 140-150 yards left!

    	Ouch.

right you are, Walta. (Hello, my friend. How have you been?)

You mean they were going up the first fairway? That's how we played the
state qualifiers, too. No OB makes for easier 9th. ....or you mean he went
the traditional route and had 150 in? That soulds like you, Walta!

    Hi Tom,

No they didn't bang it over the trees into the first... they
purposely placed the tee off spot in such a way as to have the tree
on the left (at the ninth tee) block an attempt. Forced them to
take it up the fairway as designed...

The guy I spoke of hit it over the right portion of the water.
Clearing the hazard by some 40 yards. It was even more impressive
seeing as the guy who hit first blasted his on the same line
and splashed it dead center in the water. Everyone watched as the
big guys ball took off for the water... he simply reached down for
his tee knowing it was going to be safe.

By the way Tom, I'll be playing your home court Marlboro CC
tomorrow afternoon with another fine gentlemen as yourself
by the name of Gary Mayo. We have three foursomes going off
around 2pm. I still remember your GREAT 2 iron to within
8 feet into 9 afterr a bad tee shot (only one you missed that day).
Not the most conventional way of making a birdie... but quite
    	impressive!

    	take care;

    	Walta

ps. For those of you who haven't gone over to Stow yet, do it!
These guys can play. Great golf swings. No crowds.
