My husband's dream is to play Pebble. His 40th is coming up in
October, and instead of throwing a surprise party, I was **thinking**
of sending him to CA to play Pebble for a HUGE surprise. I know this
would be a very expensive adventure, so I am asking you experienced
golf nuts ;^) for any info/tips you may have regarding: package deals
involving accommodations and golf at, and around Pebble (Spyglass,
Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills also). Bed and breakfast places, a friend
with a condo to rent, discounts, anything that would help keep costs
down so the surprise could be a reality instead of a dream/fantasy.

    Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention: We live in Groton, Massachusetts, so airfare costs
    are an issue too.

I have read the Pebble info in note 681 already.

    Thanks again!
2000.2When is the big day?EST::HOWEComputers just give you the answers. PPFri Mar 24 1995 11:0711
You might want to also think about the weather. I don't know when the
big day is, but recently they have been getting incredible amounts of
rain. Some of the courses have been closing because the drainage simply
can't keep up. I also read that you could only get the peninsula via air
these last few days. The roads have been flooded under. The same
article had noted that the number of rounds played for the past month
equaled the number of rounds played in one day last year...

    Just another data point.

Call 1-800-442-4479 for an outfit called "Golf Packages from the great
golf resorts of the world." They list a package at Spanish Bay/Pebble
Beach. Includes 3 nites, trans to/from Monterey airport,1 round golf +cart
on Pebble Beach & Spanish Bay and accomodations. Package price range
from $680-835 per person double occupancy. You could also call Pebble
directly at 408-6243811 and find out if they have any packages. Last I
checked, the cost per round if you stay at Pebble is around $150/round.
    Good luck.

2000.5Some more feedback....ANGLIN::BJAMESI feel the need, the need for SPEEDMon Jul 10 1995 18:0762
I stayed at the Inn at Spanish Bay and played all three, Spyglass,
Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach. If stay at one of the hotels in the
resort complex (either the Lodge at Pebble or Inn at Spanish Bay) you
have reciprocal agreements at the courses, that is they will give you a
break on the price for the round. The price can be steep as far as
golf course play goes (Pebble is at $150.00 if you are in one of the
resort hotels and around $200.00 if you are not). However, staying at
one of the resort hotels is an extraordinary experience. Both are very
    different but very nice.

One tip on Pebble, they will rent you a cart but forget it, it's too
beautiful a course to ride, and they will give you a caddie for a
nominal charge and that's the way to go. Plus the caddies have local
knowledge which helps with shot placement and club selection. It makes
it that much more fun and when you are spending this kind of money you
*should* have a lot of *FUN*! Y

There are great B&B's in the area of Monterey and the surrounding
penisula. Call the local chamber of commerce and they will send you
out a guide. A fantastic one is the Seven Gables Inn. It's being
profiled in the current VISA commercials on t.v. (that's right no
AMEX), and they are right close to the entrance to 17 mile drive.

Another good place to stay is called the Tickled Pink Hotel, in
Carmel the number is 1-800-635-4774. They are on Highlands Drive.
There is also a great place right next door called Highlands Inn and
the number there is 1-800-682-4811. It's a bit pricey but the view and
ammenities are fantastic. Both are within 15 minutes to Pebble and
probably 20-25 min. to Spanish Bay.

If you play Pebble, you should play one of the other two, namely
Spyglass and/or Spanish Bay just to get a feel for the differences.
Central golf reservations are 1-800-654-9300. They will give you the
    current availability and prices.

If you are going in October you will be taking your chances with the
weather or anytime for that matter, but October can be a great month to
play it's just your luck if they have the fog and coastal front come
through. Bring a warm sweater that you can play in, something like a
Polartech fleece works good, is non-restrictive and also keeps the wind
out which can blow like the dickens off the ocean. Some good rain gear
is also a good idea too 'cause those storms can come in off the
Pacific with little to no notice.

And one other thing. *LOTS* of balls! You're going to need them
especially on 7,8,9,10,15,17,and 18 probably the most awesome 18th
    hole of anywhere.

I know budgets are something to consider but this is one of those once
or twice in a lifetime things you do and you just have to put the old
credit card down and don't look back. It's an awesome experience and
one which you will never forget. And remember, in every funeral
possession I've ever seen, there never are any Brinks trucks following
along to the cemetary if you know what I mean.

Go enjoy, play golf, eat the great food, and have something to tell
your friends about. Don't forget your camera, and also don't miss the
Aquarium in Monterey which is one of the best one's in the country,
    definitely worth the side trip.

    Enjoy,
    Bill

P.S. This years California Golf guide says that it's now $175 for
resort guests and $225 (including carts) for everyone else.
