1986.0. "Golf shops" by SMAUG::BOURDEAU (Scott Bourdeau - OSI Applications) Fri Feb 10 1995 19:03

I'm looking for good golf shops in the area. I want to
buy a new set of clubs, but I don't want them to cost
$1000 as do Calloway's and King Cobra's and such. It seems
irons and woods are always sold separately these day.
Is there anywhere in the area that sells a whole, brand
name package for a decent price?

I've only been to Nevada Bob's in Westborough.

    Hi. Here are a few to consider.

        Wayland Country Club -- on Rt 27, just south of Rt 20.

        Stow Acres Pro Shop, Rt 62, Stow

        Wayland Country Club Pro shop (same as #1), on Middlesex
        Turnpike, just south of Rt 128, and the Burlington mall

        GOLF USA, Nashua (and other locations)

        Nevada Bob's (Nashua and other locations)

        Golf Day, Rt 1A/60, Everett?? (Just past the split of 60/1A).

    I don't know how much difference you will find in prices, but the
    selection will certainly be different. There is no way that they
    should be pushing you to buy $1000 of clubs to start -- that's a VERY
    high end price. In fact, I was in the Wayland pro shop just a couple
    of days ago, and was looking at the Hogan Edge Irons ($525?) and
    except for Pings, I don't think there were any other clubs more
    expensive. You can certainly find a set of irons in the $3-400
    range, or even less, maybe. They were selling Taylor Made midsize
    woods, with steel shafts, for $100 +/- each, so 3 of them, plus the
    Hogans, puts a VERY top end setup at $850 or so. Again, there are
    plenty of less expensive options available, including used clubs.

    Another possibility if you want to save some money, and aren't into
    brand names, is to buy a set of "custom made" clubs made from
    components. Basically, there are manufacturers that make
    "knock-off" copies of popular clubheads (and some original designs,
    to be fair), and then local clubmakers (assemblers?) buy these, along
    with name-brand shafts (like True Temper and Apollo), glue the heads
    on the shafts, add a grip, and voila, you have a set of clubs. It
    used to be that this was just about the only way to get custom fitted
    clubs, too (adjusted to your needs for loft and lie), but the folks
    at Wayland told me they can get almost any name brand club in upright
    and flat lies, adjusted lofts, etc., from the factories in 2 weeks or
    so, for no additional charge. There is a custom clubmaker on Rt 2A
    in Acton (never been in there, just seen the sign), and I know that a
    few readers of this conference do this from home in their spare time.
    If you're at all mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself -- get
    a copy of the Golfsmith and/or GolfWorks catalogs (2 of the several
    reputable mfgrs/suppliers), and it's all spelled out. Golfworks also
    sells assembled clubs.

    For example, you can get a variety of metalwood heads for about $26
    each (x3 = $79), iron heads for about $10 each (x10=$100), top-notch
    shafts (True Temper Dynamic Gold) run $5.70 for irons, $6.60 for
    woods, so shafts would cost $57+$19.80, plus 13 grips @$1.65 (perf
    Tour Wrap). The total would be:

                        $ 79
                        $100
                        $ 57
                        $ 20
                        $ 22
                      ------
                        $278

    Add a few bucks for glue and grip tape, and you could make yourself a
    damn nice set of clubs for $300. All of these prices come from the
    1995 Golfworks catalog.

    The bottom line is you pays your money and you makes your choice, and
    there are SOOOO many different ways to go.

1986.2Knock off clubsLUDWIG::SZEWCZYKMon Feb 13 1995 07:5010
    Hi Scott,,,

       I just had some King Cobra "knock off" irons made at Dick Fletchers
       Golf Barn in Leominster and i love them!!!
       It was 260 dollars for the set,,,an they feel great.
       I'd give it some serious thought. I think a lot of what you pay for
       in the Name brand clubs,,,,,is just that,,, The Name.
       If your into impressing people thats cool,,,if not save your Money.

                                                 ,,,,,,,Vic
1986.3watch out for knockoff ripoffsSTRATA::GOODNOWMon Jul 22 1996 10:549

      If anyone is considering haveing anything made at Dick Fletcher's
    ripoff barn... get a price from John Novak at Grandview... at least
    $100 less per set... Ping, Calloway, and Cobra knockoffs. I recently
    had a Warbird knock off made at pin-hi in West Boyleston...$105.
      Same club, same shaft, different price through John at Grandview....
             $68 !!!! I'm sure he does Burner Bubble knockoff's as well.
       If nothing else, shop around. Most places that make knockoff's jack
    the prices way up because they are still alot less than the real thing.
