1979.0. "SENIOR SKINS 95" by ABACUS::LEARY (What the world needs now is...) Tue Jan 24 1995 15:22

Does anybody know or care who is playing in the Senior Skins
Tourney this weekend??? It usually falls on the same weekend
as the Super-bore err -bowl. My guess is that its Arnie,
Chi Chi, Floyd and Jack or maybe Trevino instead of Arnie or
Chi Chi...can someone confirm or deny?

    Thanks

Trevino, Floyd, and Nicklaus for sure, but the Fourth escapes me.
    Maybe Stockton or Arnie.

The announcers kept talking about Lee Trevino's operations, how he
wasn't getting the distance and while he was being interviewed Lee
mentioned a plate in this throat.......ok, so what was the operation
for? It certainly didn't bother his voice, he was the most vocal.

I felt bad for Arnie, he wasn't well at all, at times he looked like
he didn't even want to be there. That's hard to believe....what a
    beautiful course!

Jack was sooo quiet..I realize he wasn't playing well but the banter
between the players is a good part of the enjoyment of watching this
type of match. I also realize that as the carry-overs multiply and
players aren't getting any skins they become more serious but he
    seemed quiet from the beginning.

The others are not in Floyd's league. He looked embarassed
at several points...

Replace him with Chi Chi and it would be more even.

The senior skins is about nostalgia, not competetive golf.
The regular tour would shoot low 60s on that course.

And let's face it, Arnie belongs hitting the ceremonial
first drive at the Masters, not in any kind of competition.

My thoughts,

I'm with you Mike. I felt so bad for Arnie after all he has done
for the game. If the sponsors want him they ought to just give him
$100K and have him be the color commentator. He really is quite
amusing in person with a great sense of timing.

    Mike,

You said that the skins game is about "nostalgia, not competetive
golf. I agree with the nostalgia but it certainly is competetive.
When the dollars are that high, the golfers don't have a skin under
their belt (isn't that a pun), the banter slows way down and it
certainly does become competetive. To eliminate the embarassment
for ALL the golfers they better start picking the foursome more
    carefully.

What was Lee's operations all about?

It becomes tense. And they are certainly trying hard.
But I just don't think the level of golf is competetive
	compared to normal professional events.

Now, if the skins format was "You all throw $135,000 into
the pot and THEN play skins for $540,000" do you think the
same four golfers would be willing to play? :-)

Ah, what the hell. It's STILL far better than the super bowl.

1979.8WLW::TURCOTTEThank goodness for every wrong moveFri Feb 03 1995 14:1412

I thought it was pretty competitive, there were a lot of carryovers,
which if Arnie had won, which he has done the last few years,
this would be a totatlly differnt coversation. I saw Arnie make at
least 3 of the birdie putts for halves.

Having said all that tho' Floyd is still far longer off the tee
than the other 3, which gave him the advantage, Chi-Chi would have
	been a much better choice.
