1965.0. "Off To Ayr" by PCBUOA::EHS () Tue Nov 08 1994 15:47

    Hi Folks,

I will be going to Ayr, Scotland next week for a visit to the Mfg.
facility. Because I am such a golf fanatic and lover of the game I am
hoping that someone can fill me in with some information surrounding:

    -	Current playing conditions (How is the Weather?)
    -	Are there any Historic Golf sites near-by?
    -	Can I purchase Unique Golf-related Christmas gifts at any nearby
    	shop(s)?
    -	Most Importantly - Any good watering Holes??

    	Thank-you for any information,

    		Ed Stapf

    Ed,

What better than Turnbury (sp?) and Troon!!! Troon is less than an
hour away from the plant and Turnbury is about 30 minutes from Troon.

I have only played Troon, about three years ago in the fall (I think
it was in October) and weather was coolish and a little damp, so
bring rain gear. I don't remember exact green fees, but I remember
it to be reasonable for that level of place, it was for two rounds
(AM & PM) and lunch in between. I beleive Turnbury is a more
    expensive.

I remember the course very empty (I played by myself), but at one
point in time that I took a big divot hitting the ball fat, I decide
to drop another ball and try the shot, I got called attention by some
local people telling me not do "damage the course". That is the only
true links course I have ever played and is a great experience.
Watch out, since they have a newer course side-by-side and it is easy
to confuse which holes belong to what course.

I found Scottish people extremely frendly, and watering holes are all
over the place, so you don't have to worry about that. Troon has a
pro shop, so you'll find things (shirts, sweaters, etc) with the
    course logo on them.

    Have a good trip

in addition to Troon and Turnberry (as if they aren't enough) the Ayr
course itself is extremely pleasant, as is Prestwick. Troon, Turnberry
and Prestwick are all a drive away from Ayr.

weather over here at the moment is about 8-12 C and changeable
(euphemism for wet ! it's not that wet but be prepared with
    waterproofs and umbrella).

personally, i think Turnberry is the nicest of the four with superb
views over the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran. also on view is
another small round island whose name escapes me as i type, but is
where the granite for curling stones is quarried.

Current playing conditions - quite mild, damp and not too windy.
     Overall, pretty good golfing weather.

Historic golf sites - not a great deal that I know of. Old Prestwick,
about 10-15 minutes from the Ayr facility is where the Open was first
     played.

Plenty of golf shops in the area for gifts.

Plenty of good watering holes, just ask when you arrive in Ayr.

Courses, Royal Troon (15-20 minutes), Turnberry (20-25 minutes) and
Old Prestwick are the 3 Open courses in the area. Prices are pretty
expensive at Troon and Turnberry, about 75 pounds for 1 round! There
are plenty of other courses that you could play, Barassie, Western
Gailes, Belleisle, Darley and Lochgreen are all good tests and within
20 minutes of the Ayr plant. Remember, it gets dark @16:00 these days
so you'll need to be off by midday at the latest to complete a round.

      Danny.

ps re last. The small round island is a bird sanctuary, the Ailsa Craig
      sometimes known as Paddys Milestone.

Is Turnberry allowing walk-ons? Last time I was there, couldn't play,
because the Japanese had bought the place, and the only way to get on
was to be a member, or be staying at the hotel. Has this changed
    again?

My input would be to play Royal Troon......I think it was 45 pounds.
