1934.0. "PGA Championship 1994" by CRISTA::MAYNARD (The Front Row Kid) Mon Aug 08 1994 18:23

So who are the favorites going into the 1994 Championship
    in Oklahoma ?

    1) Nick Price has been the hands down best for the last 2 years.
After winning the British Open, he's got to be the
    	favorite.

    2) Fred Couples won the Buick Open in Michigan this past weekend,
and proved his back troubles are over. (He played 36 holes on
Sunday because of a rain delay on Friday).
Probably the best American hope to avoid a shutout of the
    	Majors this year.

Gotta go with the FUZZZZ! He certainly is due and I believe he should
be considered a very serious contender.

    	Other possibilities:

    			1. Shark
    			2. "PAIN, So far this year" Stewart
    			3. Curtis "Keep your pants up" Srange
    			4. Nick "Could someone please show me a line" Faldo
    			5. Raymond "I'll win a stare-down every time" Floyd
    			6. Freddy "Oh my ach'in back" Couples
    			7. Corey "I think I can" Pavin

Just some of my thoughts FWIW.

Nick Price definitely has to be looked at seriously (I feel he is the
best player in the world right now) as a Top contender in this week's
PGA Championship. I also failed to mention Tom "Not another 3-footer"
Watson as a potential front runner.

Did anyone else catch the announcers talking about the hed to head
match between price and faldo-apparently faldo played great and lost by
    12 strokes.

I would love to have seen how well price could have played if he had
been pushed on the final nine-he looked like he had a 62-63 in the bag
    but let it get away.

EVERYONE says there will never be another Nicklaus and I agree.
Just because Price won a couple of majors in a row, don't go comparing
him with Jack until he's won all of them several times. I like Price
and probably the greatest golfer in the world...for now. Remember, he
went about ten years without winning anything on the PGA tour. Next
year it might be Couples, Norman or Mickelson but success is fleeting.
I don't believe we will ever see anyone match Jack's lifetime record.
He was a young star and proved himself continuously throughout his
    career.

Well... was Nicklaus REALLY that good? Or was everyone else
just less than Jack. I really wonder how the 70's Nicklaus
would have fared against today's players.

Heck, look at Nancy Lopez now. She's playing alot and probably
as well as ever. But, like the men's tour, the women are that
    	much better.

No one will approach Jack's record. But I'm not convinced he's
    	still the best...

    re .13

I never said he's still the best, just that there'll never be
another to match his record. I do believe that if he wasn't spending
so much time building courses and running his own club business, he'd
be the best in his class, which is the senior division. He has an out-
standing record on the senior tour considering the small number of
events in which he participates. If he were 'living' for the
competition like other top senior players, I'm sure he'd be at the top
of the money list. He really was that good and he beat a lot of great
    players.
    						JT

P.S. Many of today's best players couldn't do nearly as well without
all the high tech equipment available these days. Nicklaus in
his prime could have competed against anyone today.
1934.15The great One!PCBUOA::EHSThu Aug 18 1994 12:3842

    Re. 12

Yes, (IMO)Nicklaus was that Good! The players back in the 60's, 70's, and
80's were and still are great, high caliber golfers. As mentioned in .13 the
equipment that was used in the 70's was not as high tech and forgiving
as equipment used in todays golf game, but considering the equip. used
back they still got the job done (in great fashion). The players back
in the 70's were just as good if not better than players today
    (mentally and athletically).

    	 Just to name a few:

    				1. Nicklaus
    				2. Trevino
    				3. David Graham
    				4. Miller Barber
    				5. JC Snead
    				6. Tony Jaeklin (sp?)
    				7. Gary PLayer
    				9. Raymond Floyd
    				10.Calvin Peete
    				11.Johnny Miller
                                12.Gene Littler
        			13.Hal Sutton

IMO - I believe Jack Nicklaus was the best ever, given his track
record and his attitude towards the great game of golf.

Nancy Lopez was great until certain distractions came into
play like, children, and a spouse, and the induction into the LPGA
Hall of Fame. I believe that many good women golfers have come out
of the woodwork lately, which is making the LPGA much more
competitive which is a very good thing!

    		Just my thoughts, FWIW

Well Im to young to remember the old days!

but what I see in the history books and from tv
the biggest difference is the how early in their
career Jack and Arnold started to dominate?

were'nt they still in their teens when they won there first

    re: .13 and others

have seen in print many times in last 10 years the players who
have seen the best of yesterday and today al agree on the following:

if Ben Hogan was to play todays courses with todays equipment
no-one would even come close to him...he was that good...

he still holds the record I think for the most strokes under par
in a tournament which has held up for 35+ years....

he played "boring golf" i.e. hit the fairway hit the green...
players today are all capable of this but NOT AS CONSISTANT

hogan once played in a four day tourney and only missed 2 greens
        and 1 fairway for 72 holes...there isn't a player today that
can even come close to that kind of golf...

I believe Jack Nicklaus was 22 when he won his first tournament
as a pro, The 1962 US Open at Oakmont in extra innings against
Arnold Palmer. He was among the money winners in his first 10
PGA events, but did not win until The Open.

He did have a great career as an amateur.
