1883.0. "What's your preference? 4-Ball, Stroke, Match etc." by RUTILE::STANDRING (Only two feet, I'm afraid!) Wed Apr 20 1994 15:05

    Just a quick note to enquire about what type of games you play out
    there.

    I mostly play stroke-play, but have recently started to play
    match-play, and find it very enjoyable.

    I don't have an official handicap, but can normally go around 18 in the
    mid 20's over par. My regular playing partners are the around the same
    level, so we find that a bad hole can mess up chances of the best score
    at the end, if we play stroke-play. With match-play, I find you can
    focus your mind at the start of each hole, and say "well hey, you did
    badly on the last hole, but this next one's going to be yours!" What
    does everybody else like to play?

      Without a doubt, match play. Adds strategy, pressure and a little
    bit of gamesmenship. A blowup hole can be shrugged off more easily.

    Both. Match play is used for the round. Stroke play is for bragging
    rights afterwards.

1883.3Difference, Please.SWAM2::WANTJE_RAFri Apr 22 1994 17:204
    Excuse the ignorant question, but what is the difference between stroke
    and match play?

1883.4Even I can answer this one.ANDREW::OSTROMETP Engineering Mgr.Fri Apr 22 1994 18:049
    Basically simple:

        Stroke play: I scored 74, you scored 78, I win.

        Match play: Compare the score on each hole. Low score wins
                        the hole. I win 9 holes, you win 5, we tie 4, I
                        win.

    Thank you.

    Wait a minute. How come you won both match and stroke play? I think
    those 4 ties where really mine. :-}

    I play in lots of tournys - I really prefer 4 ball. It incorporates
    handicap, it usually makes the match come down to the last hole, shot.
    It includes three levels of strategy
                     golfer vs course
                     teammate to teammate
                     team vs team
    It forces you to play the game differently and causes you to change the
    club and the shot many more times.
    If match play (like the Ryder Cup) is the next big sporting event
    I think that four ball will be right behind.

    4 ball is two teams in one foursome stroking of off the lowest handicap
    and playing match. My partner is a 7 and is never in trouble,
    and is a shrewd old codger from Maine. So I can hit first or second or
    go for it or play safe or choose to let the other team hit or ....
