1846.0. " Looking for Arizona course info..." by SISDA::DONESKI () Wed Mar 02 1994 16:44

	I'll be heading out to Arizona ( Scottsdale ) in 10 days. We'll
	be golfing, and I'd like to get some information from anyone
	in that area:

		. We're booking some tee-times now, trying(??) to keep it to
		  around $65. I understand that local papers have discount
		  coupons, could someone list some of the public courses in
		  the Scottsdale area that these coupons might apply to?

		. We have booked a tee-time at Superstition Springs, for $85.
		  (ouch!) Can anyone tell me if this course is worth it? Also
		  the same question for Gold Canyon? Papago came recommended
		  as a good public course, any confirmations?

		  I would love to play Stone Creek (again), but I am sure that
		  fees are well over $100, can anyone confirm?

		. Any recommendations for courses priced at around $65-ish/
		  weekdays would be appreciated. (Please include course type
		  if possible)

		. I see the temp's have been 80-ish during the day, what does
		  the temp. drop to at night? Sweater, jacket weather?

	Thanks in advance...

	   Sue

    You might try calling the Arizona Golf Association. There number is
    602-953-5990, in Phoenix. They provide info on courses and presumably
    pricing.

1846.3some recent infoATEIS::MILLERWed Mar 02 1994 20:5527

    	Was just out there last week. Am not completely sure but believe
    	the fairways at Superstition Springs were not overseeded (i.e.,
    	tees and area around greens are green, fairways are brown)
    	Superstition is a somewhat challenging course often with deep rough
    	in the area around the greens.

    	Dobson Ranch is a wide open course with green tees and green areas.
    	Brown fairways but play nicely. You can play a round at Dobson for
    	about $40 with cart. Ken McDonald in Tempe is a nice course that
    	can be played for less than $30. For a little drive, Western Skies
    	south of Chandler is nice.

    	I have played Gold Canyon and it is a desert target course. Some
    	people love it, some hate it.

    	There are occasionally coupons in the paper for courses like Rancho
    	San Marcos (Chanlder) that have a resort layout. A similar course,
    	but a bit further drive would be Chuparuso Springs ( I think it is
    	in Gilbert). The Vans and Nevada Bobs golf stores sell a couple
    	different coupon books. Take careful note of the days of the week
    	and the weeks of the year the coupons are good for. Also watch out
    	for 2-1 green fees but required separate charges for carts.

    	Have fun out there. The weather has been beautiful !

1846.4CLUB WEST - very niceATEIS::MILLERThu Mar 03 1994 12:169

    	CLUB WEST is a new course in the foothills area in South Phoenix,
    	about 20 minute drive from central Scottsdale. It open last year
        and was completely sodded. I played it and found it very nice.
        The cost, if my memory is correct, was about $69/person plus tax.
    	This is a little over your goal set but I feel the course is very
        nice. Some very interesting holes, double greens, elevated tees,etc.

	Thanks Walt, I appreciate you responding and the information you've
	supplied. Glad to hear that the weather's been great. Paper's been
	showing low 80's, looks like that's valid! Thanks Again!

1846.6New Number for Arizona Golf AssociationHARBOR::COPELANDFri Mar 04 1994 21:2911
    RE: .1,.2

    I got that number from an Arizona tourist publication. And - you are
    right I just called it and it is no longer in service. Their new number
    is 602-944-3035. They are open 7:30 to 3:30 their time. Since it is
    after their hours I could not reach them to see if they still provide
    information.

    I will try next week.

1846.7Papago - $25.50ANGLIN::SUZDAOffice of Perpendicular ProcessingTue Mar 08 1994 14:1315
    I just came back from a week out in Scottsdale yesterday. I opted for
    Papago everyday because I wanted to keep the costs down this trip.
    $25.50 for non-residents + cart, but I walked it. The greens and tee
    areas were beautiful. The fairways are just starting to turn green.

    The paper had about 3-4 courses with coupons in the $30-$75 range.
    Stone Creek was $85, only a little higher than most of the other
    resorts. The weather was great, 82-87 degrees.

    Have fun and good luck.

    Regards,

    Tom
