1802.0. "FIBERSHAFT??" by MYOSPY::LORTIE () Mon Nov 01 1993 19:33

    IN SEARCH OF INFO

Last night at 11:30 an infomercial came on TV38 out of Boston. It
was advertising a new FIBERGLASS shafted driver. The infomercial
guaranteed 1) to add 15 - 40 yards to your drive, 2) increase driver
accuracy, and 3) reduce your score by 8 strokes.

In the part that I watched they used an analogy to the fiberglass
poles pole vaulters use. It stated that when fiberglas poles came out
jumping distances went from approxamately 15' to 20'.

The shaft is designed to bent more on the back swing, but whip back
to square on impact. The whipping action is where the extra distance
    comes from. Makes sence.

The fiberglas shaft is softer than steel or graphite, therefore on
impact if the club head is not square the target the torque in the soft
shaft will allow the club head to return to square on impact.
Scepticle. They claim and demonstrated (nice graphics) how the club
head will rotate back to square. If the club face is open on impact the
toe will continue to roll through the ball on impact, thus returning
the club square. It effect will be a more accurate drive.

The club retails for $350 and is available through this TV offer
along with a free instructional video for $199.95, with a 30 day money
back guarantee. I didn't catch the manufacturer or the phone number to
call and order. I was getting ready to go to work and trying to get as
much info as I could. The club is endorsed by Larry Bird, Roman Gabriel,
Ken Woodward (sp) long drive champion, Gary Carter, and Marlene Floyd.
I don't remember the name of the former pro that was pitching the club.
I think it may have been Brian Spencer, but I could be wrong.

any info or discussion will be appreciated.

1802.1needs a test drive :)FREE::GOGUENIs it spring yet?Mon Nov 01 1993 19:537
Yeah, I caught that infomercial a while back. They sure make it look
impressive, but it's tough to tell without trying it.

As for the price, many things that are "half-priced" on these specials
wind up in a golf catalog for half-again the TV-quoted price......

you can't BUY a golf swing in a pro shop or from infomercial's....

how anyone can hosestly CLAIM to:

add 15 - 40 yards to your drive or

reduce your score by 8 strokes

without seeing a person swing is beyond me....guess P.T. Barnum was
    correct...

Any soft tip, high torque, soft flex, low flex point shaft would
probably do the same thing. I don't think any good players are using
this. Who cares what Larry Bird is using ? Hell, I could probably beat
    him - and I'm not a "player...

Maybe they've improved it, but fiberglass has been tried before - and
    it bombed...

I watched the whole thing. I'll try the recap the claims.

o Fewer badly hit balls. Greater flex allows the head to twist
straight when the club face is open/closed. It was obvious from
the diagrams that for this to work you had to hit it on the heal
side of center when the club face was open. And vis vera for
a closed face. Otherwise it would be worse. I don't know about
you but when my club face gets open it goes off the toe. This
club will but me 3 fairways over instead of one.

o Greater distance. The greater flex is supposed to "explode"
with exactly the right timing, custom fitted to your swing
speed. You were to tell them which club you hit at the 150s.
    	  I don't know about you, but I'm between a 4 and 5 at the
beginning of a round and will typically pick the 4. By the
end of a round I'm definitely hitting 5 and may even try to
stick a stiff 6. So what is the right "explode" stiffness
    	  for me?

o 8 strokes off you score. It was for 18 holes. Assumed you
are in the woods a 2-4 times a round and with the extra distance
will be hitting short irons to the green instead of long irons.
My take was it was aimed at the double bogey golfer.

I like my stiff shafts. There are enough variables in my swing
without adding a club face designed to move around.
