1794.0. "S. Cal Course Recommendations?" by SWAM2::WANTJE_RA () Fri Oct 15 1993 18:21

    Just a beginner, I am, yes, sir. I have spent all my 'golf time' this
    summer on the range. Now that cooler weather is here (Southern
    California) I want to expand my game to the course.

    Any recommendations for courses that are geared for the advanced
    beginner in the Long Beach CA. area? Short par 4s would be ideal.

    Thank you.

    My one recommendation is not to play Torrey Pines in La Jolla. I loved
    the course but I hit fairly long (not straight but long) and some of
    the par 4's are monsters.  Beautiful course...hugely busy...pricy $38
    for weekday and very addicting. Wait until you are 65 retire in San
    Diego county become a resident and pay $38 a month for senior county
    residents.  Such a deal...

    I think there are some courses towards the east a bit that are w/in
    a half hour of the coast though that offer quite a bit. Mission Trails
    Singing Hills, Rancho Santa Fe...probably quite a few more.

    Hit em few and far between,

    We had a few people out to Torey Pines not too long ago and thought it
    was wonderful. I thought it was reasonably priced for the area.

    Another one that I played a little farther north was Rancho San
    Juaquin. I am not sure what town it was in but it too was nice.

1794.3Many courses, so little time...SIERAS::MCCLUSKYMon Oct 18 1993 21:0813
    Try Recreation Park in Long Beach (not the short course), it is
    excellent, city run and crowded. Then there is Skylinks, just across
    from the airport and just off the 405. I like to play Lakewood Country
    Club which is also in Long Beach. If you want a shorter regulation
    course with a very nice variety of shots, hazards, topography and view,
    try Los Amigos in Downey - my wife likes it because it is shorter and
    she hits the darn ball in the fairway all the time, so she scores well
    there. Take the 710 north, exit at Artesia Blvd. east to Old River
    School Road, turn left one block to entrance. There are lots more, go
    to Roger Dunn's and get his directory for about a $1.00 and there is a
    map and description. Questions, call me,.
