1746.0. "Good public course in RI or CT ?" by MSHRMS::NELSON (Mike, MCAx Team (SHR), 237-6193) Tue Jul 20 1993 17:25

    I'm looking for a good course to play on a weekend in early August in
    the Northern Rhode Island/Northeastern CT area.

    My Dad and I take on my father-in-law and brother-in-law every year
    in what we call the "Better Late Than Never Father's Day Tournament."

    Does anyone know of any good public courses in this general area?
    Include course name and town, if you can.

    Thanks much,

    Mike

    You might want to try Exeter CC in Exeter, R.I. 401 295-8212

    N. Kingstown G.C. is also nice - at the Quonset Point base. Laurel
    Lane G.C. is also supposed to be an excellent course, but I haven't
    played there. Laurel Lane is 7mi past U.R.I. on rt 138.

1746.3There are others (in this NOTES file)INDEV1::SMITHI need two of everything...Tue Jul 20 1993 19:0317
    Laurel Lane is a well kept course with water in fairways. It's
    a bit short, but offers a challenge because of the narrow (at
    times) fairways, traps, and 2-3 holes with water hazards. I
    like North Kingstown (Quonset Point) a litter better. Again,
    it's a *very9 well manicured course with watered fairways. There
    arer 5 par -3's, but the par 5's are fairly long, and many of
    the par fours offer a good challenge. This course was built
    for officer user ONLY when Quonset was in full miltary form.

    Get there *early* on the weekends, or be prepared for a *long*
    wait (this goes for Laurel Lane as well).

    Cranston CC is also another choice. Nice course, well watered,
    pretty long. Greens are *big* and fast. More expensive ($26 for
    weekend), but it's nice.

    I second Cranston C.C.!! Nice track and real Green!!
    It moves along pretty well, too...

    Another course, Country View C.C. in Burriville R.I. ( (401) 568-7157)
    is a nice little course. $22.00 Green fees on the weekend and
    you definately can play it in 4 hours, even on the weekend. It has
    a nice clubhouse and serve breakfast too!

1746.5Raceway CC, Thompson CTMYOSPY::LORTIEThu Jul 22 1993 00:506
     In Thompson CT Raceway CC. I'm not sure of the weekend rates. Mon -
    Fri $23.50 (green fee, cart and lunch). I found the course in fair
    shape, the greens were better than most public courses.

1746.6Thanks for the replies...MSHRMS::NELSONMike, MCAx Team (SHR), 237-6193Tue Jul 27 1993 16:5410
    Thanks to all - I'll look at these places on a map and pick one.
    After the Father/Son Tourney is over, I'll post something about
    the course we played. I can't promise to post scores - if they're
    embarrassing, you won't see 'em.

    Mike, I don't believe anyone mentioned TPC outside Hartford, where
    the pro tour has a tournament. TPC course ususally let public play
    if thet don't have anything going.

1746.8Laurel Lane report...MSHRMS::NELSONMike, MCAx Team (SHR), 237-6193Mon Aug 16 1993 12:0819

    Well, we played Laurel Lane in West Kingston last weekend. It was
    a pretty good layout, but a bit on the short side (5800 yds) and there
    were a lot of holes with on-the-property out of bounds (a pet peeve of
    mine that wouldn't be such a big deal if I could keep the drive in the
    fairway!).

    We waited for an hour for a tee time - got there at 9:00 and teed off
    at 10:00. The round moved along pretty quickly and we finished in
    about 4 hours.

    Just fyi, greens fees on the weekend were $17, a fair price for a
    decent course. Thanks to everyone who recommended a site for the
    1993 Father/Son Tourney. Had a nice time even though I lost my shirt
    to my Dad and father-in-law.
