    NOT FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1745.3Is there a RYDER CUP this year???GALVIA::KPEARSONWed Sep 01 1993 12:5330

    Am I in the right place???

    If so there doesn't seem to be much interest in the Ryder Cup this year
    in this conference.

    As I am sure this is the NOT the case, could someone please tell me when
    the comp is on and also post the two teams, thats if the US team has
    been announced yet.

    I for one am really looking forward to the great competition and drama it
    throws up as it provides these "great golfers" with something else to
    play for, instead of just personal glory and money.

    I think it will be as close and as exciting as it has been with us
    (Europe) just shading it (I hope anyway!!!).

    What does anybody think?? If there is anybody there........

    I'm not sure of the full European side but on two points I think it is
    great to see a Swede being ask to represent us (Sorry for my ignorance
    but I don't know his name) and on a sad point it was a shame that Ronan
    Rafferty (sp) just missed out as he seemed to be returning to the great
    form he was showing a year or two ago.

    Here's to a great weekend of sport.. when this time Bernie's putt goes
    in.

    Cheers Keith

1745.4We All Win.CTHQ::OCONNORWed Sep 01 1993 13:015
    I, for one, am looking forward to the match. To be able to enjoy great
    golf, great players, to root for the "home" team is really fun.
    Regardless of which team wins, we all win.

1745.5Ryder Cup When?CSOA1::RANKINWed Sep 01 1993 15:211
    What are the dates of the Ryder Cup?
1745.6The lost civilization GALVIA::KPEARSONThu Sep 02 1993 14:2155

    I've found it .........

    After searching through the depths of the notes file there it was
    shining like a beacon with all the most useful info. spilling out from
    its hidden bowels, so I was right there were other people as interested
    as I was and they back in the early months of this year set up a note
    for the Ryder Cup this year '93 and its no.1631

    Livingstone... (his memoirs)

    So for us "the misguided" here is some of that useful info..

    Competition - The Ryder Cup '93
    Venue - The Belfry, England
    Date  - 24-26 September

    the teams:

    				US Team			Europe
    			      ---------------------------------------------
    Non playing Captains	Tom Watson Bernhard Gallacher

    Players			Paul Azinger		Nick Faldo
    				Fred Couples		Colin Montgomorie
    				Tom Kite		Berhard Langer
    				Lee Janzen		Ian Woosnam
    				Corey Pavin		Barry Lane
    				Payne Stewart		Mark James
    				John Cook		Sam Torrance
    				Davis Love III		Constantino Rocca
    				Chip Beck		Peter Baker
    				Jim Gallagher jnr	Jose-Marie Olazabal*
    			        Ray Floyd*		Seve Ballesteros*
    				Lanny Wadkins*		A Swede ????? *

    * denotes wildcard choices

    The Swede is still unknown to me but its probably Jockim Haeggman
    if he's swedish or it might be Jesper Parnevick, or there's Andes
    Forsbrand, but I don't think its him but I could be wrong, so a
    little bit of help is needed here lads/lassies ok

    So I guess will be joining the earlier civilization down in 1631 bc
    from now on...

    So heres to the best team winning and a great compo

    Cheers Keith

    Hi There,

           (TO ALL AMERCIANS) the europeans are taking the ryder cup
      back. The AMERCIANS have'nt a chance of winning, that is my
      thought!!!!!!!!

    Re: .8 - Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves. If the European (the
    CONTINENTAL European) players hadn't been added to the Ryder Cup, this
    thing would be the best soporific since Sominex. Got some great players
    in the British isles, not many, but some.... The good ones are REAL
    good, but I think that in recent cups, guys like Langer, Olazabal, and
    the other Spanish guy have made y'all a lot better than you might like
    to 'fess up to.

    May the best team win (and is it o.k. for us to use Greg Norman (he
    talks funny...)?

    JACK,

         Greg norman was born in AUSTRALIA so he can hardly play the for
         AMERICAN team. we have some of the best players in the world,

    	Fyi, there's a color 5 or 6 page flier in today's USA Today
    	re: the Ryder Cup. Articles like "Why the Americans will
    	Win" and "Why the Europeans will win", and a Viewers Guide,
    	and also "The Brabazon Course".

    	Kite will beat Langer on the last Singles match to win the
    	cup for the US. (My prediction).

    	Tom (of course)

    The U.S. Team should include those who reside in the U.S.... Like Greg
    and (the other) Nick..., et al...

    Actually, the way I look at it, I can see the trend in the 'European
    Team' to continue to grow geographically to keep pace with the
    Americans...  ;^)

1745.15USPMLO::DESROCHERSTue Sep 14 1993 16:1612

    	According to the flier, the Belfry is an American style course
    	and some folks question why they'd have the Cup there. The
    	reason...

    	"The Brabaxon was designed in the mid-70's by Peter Alliss and
    	Dave Thomas, and according to its owners, they tailored it
    	expressly to give European teams a place to develop the shot-
    	making and strategy required by American target-style golf
    	which dominated competition at the time. The practice worked..."

1745.16Who Plays For Whom?SWAM2::WANTJE_RATue Sep 14 1993 22:2419
What are the rules from the players nationality in the RYDER Cup? I believe
Norman does have a residence in Florida. Would he qualify for the American
team?

RYDER CUP THEN:

U.S. versus Britian

RYDER CUP NOW:

U.S. versus Europe

RYDER CUP FUTURE:

U.S. versus THE WORLD

Enough said.

    I think Norman might even be a U.S. Citizen now, but it seems like if
    he is, he'd be playing.

    Dave Thomas ? I eat at Wendy's a lot, and I didn't know he played... (I
    know - he's a Welshman, Welsher, whatever you call someone from a place
    whose major export is consonants).

    Great idea - build one course to teach Europeans how to play American
    courses, and play it every four years. Must be quick learners with long
    memories over there...

    You have to be born in the U.S. to get on the team.

1745.19home course advantage?TEEUP::MOOKWhere are you between two thoughts?Wed Sep 15 1993 20:167
Its funny that when the cup is played in G.B. its been on U.S. style course
and when it was here last it was played on a G.B. links style course Kiawa (sp?)
Island S.C. Trying to make the guests feel at home? Thats not usually what
happens at sporting events. You would think each side would choose based
on their own strengths.

    	From this months Golf Digest...

    	Did you know there were 2 Scandinavian players on the

    Actually, Golf D. was reporting that this was a joke circulating
    throughout the UK following The Cup.

    I'm not ready to count Seve out, and certainly expect him to be the
    European captian for the next Cup.

    maybe not it '95 but definitely in '97 when the Cup travles to Spain.
1745.23MROA::VARLEYWed Nov 24 1993 12:407
    I've got a LOT of respect for Seve. Sure, by his standards he played
    like a very pedestrian competitor this year - the whole year - but he's
    got too much talent and heart not to turn it around. Don't know whether
    he'll ever reach his previous level, but he IS a leader. As long as
    he's involved with the Ryder Cup, he'll make us Yanks nervous...
