1710.0. "Head transplant ???" by RAYBOK::COOPER (One-ton Tomato !) Tue Jun 08 1993 21:13

I have an interesting question for the clubmakers in this notesfile.
Is it possible to remove a metal driver head from a graphite shaft
and replace with a different style of head if both heads have the
same size hosel bore ? What would the labor cost be for such a
modification if it is possible ?

    Yes, you can put a new head on a graphite shaft provided both the hosel
    bore internal diameter and depth are the same. Pulling a graphite head
    can be tricky because if too much heat is applied it can break down the
    epoxy within the shaft itself weakening it at the tip end which could
    lead to the shaft actually breaking just when you needed that monster
    drive. Provided there are no other modifications required (i.e. using a low
    hosel, bore through design head which would necessitiate other shaft
    modifications) I'd estimate the charges in the $20-$25 range.

1710.2Meaning of Tricky?SAHQ::TROTTERWed Jun 09 1993 20:096

    I'm trying to understand the meaning of "tricky" when you have a
    graphite head. I assume its a graphite head with a graphite shaft.
    Does tricky mean don't do it or does it mean take it to someone who is
    experienced with graphite?

    I'll second/third, whatever, what the other club guys have said - don't
    mess with graphite unless you really know what you're doing. It's a
    great way to ruin a club.

    	"Tricky", IMO, means don't mess with it unless you have the right
    equipment AND know what you're doing. The temperature at which the
    epoxy breaks down is only a few degrees less than the temp. at which
    the graphite will break down. With steel, just put the torch to it.
    If either the head or the shaft is graphite, you really need a shaft
    puller. This will exert constant pressure trying to pull the shaft
    while you slowly heat the joint with a heating gun. The shaft should
    let go as soon as the epoxy bond is broken and before the graphite
    melts. I don't have much experience with this but I believe this is
    the preferred method. As far as removing graphite from graphite...

    						...good luck!!

    I have clubs with graphite heads and graphite shafts which is why I asked
    the meaning of tricky. It sounds like if I have a problem I would need
    to take them to someone with a lot experience in graphite. Or return
    them to the manufacturer. They came with a 2 year warantee so
    obviously the manufacturer stands behind any repairs that would need to
    be made.

    Thanks for the advice.
