1709.0. "Memorial 1993" by CXDOCS::DCHAVEZ (Dale - Colorado Springs) Mon Jun 07 1993 16:09

Anyone else catch the "picking of Payne's pocket" this weekend? What
an ending to the Memorial! Now, granted, he should have put his second
shot somewhere on the green (and yes, his ball was in a divot), but his
shot out of the buried lie in the bunker was nothing short of
spectacular. Only to be followed by the Azinger's shot of the year.

Both shots were a lesson in that lost art of shot-making. I figured
Payne would be lucky to get within 20 feet or so. Though Azinger had
the better lie, he played a touch shot (not a true explosion) that was
    perfect.

    Gotta' feel for Payne.

I dunno - he shot 74, yes? And, from what parts I saw, he went
for tucked pins instead of the middle, esp on 18.

Plus, he wore Cleveland Browns colors - how could he win?

They were fantastic shots but I don't feel bad for Payne. Sunday is
the day to win tournaments. He shot 74, not a winners score, and lost
to Azinger who shot 69. Stewart had been in the 60's all week and a
minimum of 69 and he wins by 3. He choked!
He will win the OPen, though!!!

Great finish by the Zinger, I only caught the last few holes, and from
what little I saw, Zing missed on 16 & 17 for Birdies to tie, and when
he went in the bunker I figured Paine had it won. Then I noticed the Browns
outfit and said he'll find a way to lose. Tough way to go down, but give
Zinger credit. I thought the coverage was pitiful more Dean Witter and
less golf and they showed most shots on the replay. Please get live shots
    for the Open coming up.

I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what happened on the last hole to
give Azinger the win. I turned on the tv late Sun. night to watch the
tape of the tournament (hadn't seen it live - didn't know the outcome).
I fell asleep, and woke up to blurrily see Azinger acept the trophy.
Haven't seen a paper since... Am I on Mars, or what ? BTW, I just
haven't gotten around to checking out the media - obviously, the
coverage has already told the story...

18th hole: Zinger hit a 1 iron off the tee. (Not very well) Stewart hit
a good drive but it ended up in a divot. Paul hit his approach (200+)
into the back bunker. Payne pulled his into the left bunker. Paul had
a good lie, Payne had fried-egg (almost impossible). At this point
Payne had a 1 shot lead on Paul and Cory Pavin who was sitting in the
tower with the announcers. Payne hit an excellent bunker shot about 10
feet past the hole. However, Paul hit an impossible bunker shot and
holed it. Payne was shook! and missed the putt to tie and also missed
the 3 footer coming back to tie for second. The winner got 252K,
second got 160K, Payne got 95K for third. Those two missed putts cost
    him 157K!!!!!

1709.6I hope to catch the highlights...ROYALT::RASPUZZIMichael Raspuzzi - LAT Engineering et alTue Jun 08 1993 16:4512
I definitely won't miss "Inside the PGA Tour" on ESPN this week for that!
None of the cable stations in my area carried the tournament (and I try
not to miss "Inside the Senior PGA Tour" or "Inside the PGA Tour" on
Sunday mornings).

For interested parties who get ESPN - Inside the Senior PGA Tour is typically
on Sunday mornings from 8:30am to 9am. Immediately following at 9am to
9:30am is Inside the PGA Tour. Check your local listings as times vary
every once in a while (sometimes the shows run back to back at 6:30am
on Sunday - definitely VCR material for me ;-)).

1709.7How would you have played it ??RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Tue Jun 08 1993 21:3013
Watching the tournament on Sunday made me think about being in the
position of leading a tournament and going into the final round and
deciding how to play that day. If you have been aggressive all week
and that has gotten you into the lead, do you continue to play that
way on Sunday ? Or, do you get conservative, shoot for the middle
of the greens and just try to protect ? Payne kept shooting at really
tough pins and it cost him strokes early in the round not just at 18.
If he had played conservatively, going for pars, would it have mattered
at the end what Azinger did from the bunker ? I don't know, it is my
nature to always shoot for the pin so I probably would do the same no
matter what the circumstance. How about you ???

He did right!! If he changed and shot for the middle of greens he might
of shot 80. Nobody ever said golf was fair, but that is what makes it
interesting. Muirfield ain't exactly the fairest courses. The
Memorial is taking on the air of a MAJOR tourniquet (as in choke to
    death!)

Been awhile since I played it, but I remember the greens are TOUGH!
Everything is an adventure, so having a bunch of 35 footers from the
middle of the greens is not a guarantee. The flip side is that the "up
and downs" if you miss a green going for a pin are very tough - much
tougher, IMO, than a Winged Foot, for example.

Although it is beautiful, Muirfield Village is relentless! You hit a
bunch of good shots, feel o.k. and then you realize you're shooting a
million. Since you're not surrounded by the stark, harsh landscape of a
Shinnecock, or a Portrush, it takes awhile to sink in. It's an
unbelievable place, but not the kind of place I'd want to play every
day - like Scioto. I guess Donald Ross was a better architect than
    Nicklaus...

1709.10Stuart vs Azinger in "Fistfull of Dollars"POBOX::SARRAZINEWed Jun 09 1993 15:2823
"When a man with a rifle meets a man with a pistol, the man with the
pistol is a dead man." says Payne Stuart. "Let's see if that's true."
    says Paul Azinger.

Basically this was a perfect example of the validity of the golf axiom
"Drive for show, Putt (and Chip) for dough."

Payne hit 12 of 14 fairways with his rifle (Driver) on his way to a 74.
Zinger hits a pathetic 55% greens in regulation, but wedges and putts
his way to a 69 and the big payday.

Still, in Payne's defense, if you're going to go down, go down in
style. I don't think Payne would have layed up on 15 at Augusta
being down 2 shots. If you have the talent and/or the guts, you go
out and try to knock down every flagstick!!!!

After Zinger made the sand shot, I had to recheck who he was playing
with. Thought for sure it had to be Greg Norman. Norman must feel
    like he dodged a bullet.
