1677.0. "Triggs, N. Providence" by CTHQ::OCONNOR () Tue Apr 20 1993 19:47

    Does anyone know anything about Triggs Golf Course in North Providence,
    Rhode Island? I was playing at Exeter C.C. and one of the people I was
    going around with said that it used to be a "championship caliber"
    course.

    Triggs is a Donald Ross designed municipal course and I believe it held a pro event back
    in the 30's. I've played it during the early spring and it is a good
    layout but it doesn't appear to have been well maintained during recent
    years.

    I've heard about it too. Sounds like a George Wright - the kind of
    course that folks who appreciate smatterings of architectural genius
    might like, but a place that has fallen somewhat into disrepair. I felt
    that way about Ponkapoag #2, which I played years ago when I lived in
    Canton. Condition was so awful that I only played it once, but you
    could see Ross's hand in it...

    Could you send me directions to get there? From 95 south. Is it a 70,
    72? Slope? Rating? Total yardage? Anything else you might think of.
    Thanks, I appreciate it.

    George Wright is in decent shape. Played there regularly the past
    couple of years. Gotta hit'em straight there. Par 70, great layout.

    You are right. Ponky is a disaster as far as maintenance. The MDC has
    had two people to maintain the 36 holes there for the past half dozen
    years. The No. 1 course is an absolutely fantastic layout. What a shame.

1677.4Not all of it is RossEMASS::MURPHYWed Apr 21 1993 20:5514
    re: Ponky

    I heard (from a worker at Geo. Wright) that only 9 of the 36 holes at
    Ponky were Ross designed. He said they were intermixed on the #1 and
    #2 course.

    I also like the layout of the #1 better than the #2. I sure wish the
    MDC would give the course to someone who would take care of it.

    (I wonder what holes are the Ross holes? Course #1 17 & 18?)

1677.5My Guess Is.....CTHQ::OCONNORThu Apr 22 1993 13:1010
    Dan,

    I am not sure, but I would guess that it might be as follows:

    Hole:	1   2   1   9   10   11   16   17  18
    Course:     2   2   1   1    1    1    1    1   1

    I will stop by one of these days and find out if anyone knows.

1677.6Directions to TriggsBRAT::BRADSHAWThu Apr 22 1993 20:067
    Take rt.95 into Providence and get off at exit 21 (Atwells Road) and
    take a right off the ramp; go approx. 1 1/2 miles to Mt. Pleasant Rd.
    and take a right; then take your first left at the light.
    The course probably measures around 6500 yds from the whites with a
    slope of around 121 and it is a par 72.

    Thanks. I am planning to go there some Sunday afternoon within a month
    or so. Care to join me?
    Anyone else?

1677.8The Front Nine of OneCTHQ::OCONNORFri Apr 23 1993 13:178
    I was way off with my guess. I talked to someone in the pro shop who
    has played at Ponky since 1946. The original 9 holes that Ross designed
    was the front nine of the number one course. Ross came back later and
    designed the back nine of the number one course. The number two course
    was added later. The number one course is the one to the right as you
    stand with your back to the clubhouse.

    Regarding those original front nine holes at Ponky...five of them
    dogleg to the left. On the back nine, four of them do. Can you say
    "draw"?

1677.10Say What?CTHQ::OCONNORFri Apr 23 1993 19:226
    Gary

    Draw is not in my golf vocabulary, more like duck hook, especially
    lately.

1677.11Triggs Memorial Info.RICKS::DEVERELLFri Apr 23 1993 21:4041

    Triggs Memorial is a par 72 with a course rating
    of 71.0 and slope of 124 (from the whites).

    The Providence Open once drew the likes of Snead
    and Hogan back in the 30's I believe. More recently
    the Providence Open, which was revived two years ago,
    draws local New England pros and some pros from the
    Hogan tour. A guy named Elliot set the course record
    of 63 a few years ago in the Open.

    The RI Public Links is held there every year during
    the week off July 4th.

    The course was not well maintainted for quite a few
    years and some less than qualified operators removed
    some bunkers and modified some of the greens over the
    years but Donald Ross is written all over this design.
    If been told by the elders of the club that the present
    design is much more forgiving than the original design.

    The present operators (who lease from the city of Providence)
    have made significant improvements to the course and
    promise to make more. The greens at Triggs are, in my
    opinion, quite good for a public course. They are
    generally on the firm side.

    Greens fees are $22 on the weekend and I think $18 during
    the week. I would suggest that you call ahead for a
    tee-time, the inner-club ties the tees up on weekend
    mornings and leagues are of plenty on weekday afternoons.

    There are some fairly difficult par fours at Triggs and
    the par threes are not gimmies either, but the par fives
    are all reachable in two, although you may pay a price
    if you take that chance and hit it offline. All in all
    it's a fair but challenging layout.

1677.12Still some ggod days left here in N.E.INDEV1::SMITHI need two of everything...Wed Oct 13 1993 18:5724

    Thanks for the directions in this note, I would never have found
    Triggs without them.

    I played last Friday, beautiful day almost 80, little wind, sun
    shine! We called for tee-times, but the pro said ' you won' need
    them this time of year'. Well, we got there about 8:30 and there
    were about 10 4-somes ahead of us! We told him the story and because
    8 guys were in the lot getting ready, he got us in front on them.

    The course was nice, not great shape but very good shape. Large, *fast*
    greens. Many greens have severe slopes around the edges. On one of the
    par 5's (this was my first time playing), I went over some trees on
    my second shot and put it on the fringe! Well, I followed my best shot
    of the day up with my worst. The pin was on the other side of the
    green. I tapped, or so I thought, my ball with my putter towards the
    hole. It KEPT ROLLING, and went past the pin, down the slope of the
    green and OFF the green. I was chipping back on and too a SIX!

    It was a great day. Good match, we all took the day out of work,
    weather couldn't be better. I'll play there again for sure. Green
    fee $17.50.
