1642.0. "Norman is back, or is he?" by CHRLIE::HUSTON () Mon Mar 08 1993 15:45

Well, what do you think, is Greg Norman back for real, or was this
weekend a fluke. I know he was confused on the day of the week, he
shot his Sunday round on Saturday, maybe he was confused by being in
    the lead :-)

I personally think he is back, he has put alot of work/time into
getting back and seems to be having fun again. I really think he will
be a dominant force this year, hopefully taking at least one major.
He does seem to be running up for the masters which is in several
    short weeks.

Others that I saw on the leader board that have been missing for awhile
were Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. Heard an interview with Jack and
even he seemed somewhat surprised at his performance (not sure what
    he did Sunday).

Now all we have to do is get rid of all this snow and I can go to the
course and pound out my first 62....

Then move on to the 10th and try to cheer up.

    Hi Bob,

I agree... I think the shark is back too. Between Kite's 62 and
Normans 62, we should be in for some serious golf at Augusta! I'm
sure the other competitors are well aware the level of play of late.
Which means they'll all start practicing 23 hours a day rather than
    20 like they do now.

When Greg gets it going, its got to be the best/most exciting golf
to watch... to hear Nicklaus humbled by shooting 67 compared to
Greg's 62 was the ultimate kudos.

    	The Masters should be AWESOME!

Nicklaus made a comment along the lines of: "I was tied for the
lead at -12 (?), parred in and now I'm 9 shots back" Kind of tough
to handle. Also, I think it was Azinger, that Saturday morning was
tied for the lead, at the end of the day he shot a 68 and lost
    6 strokes to Norman.

Well lets just hope Greg rips it apart at Augusta......I think that

more people have been willing to put this champion down than look

hard at his tournaments and see he has been around in the top 10

many many times, which is a lot harder than it sounds. I think

everybody has been hopeing we'll see another Nicklaus. We know in

hearts that very improbable. I've never lost my appreciation of

his golf stature...Norman's here for a long while to come.....

Like this comment or not it is what I believe in the pro-ranks.

The "Shark" had the killer instinct for Doral. He was in that "zone"
that everyone refers too. If memory serves me correct it was on
Saturday about the 15th or 16th hole that he missed a putt and was
visably upset. He had a 6 stroke lead at the time....and he's upset.
Now that the killer instinct I reffered to. His swing looked better
than it has in the past and he appears to be mentally prepairing over
each shot for a longer period of time.

Oh he's back and Augusta ought to be some match....I think the leader
board there will change like New England weather....The "Shark",
Tom Kite, Freddie "Boom-Boom" Couples, Dave Love III and I don't know
why but I got a feeling about Corie Pavin...

1642.5Was he ever Away???CGOOA::DURNINJim - Unum Cum Virtuitous Multorum Tue Mar 09 1993 17:3726
    Hi,

I don't kow that Norman has ever really been "away". He has certainly
been injured at least if memory serves me correct.

Wasn't it in 1991 that he severely hurt his wrist while playing a shot
out of the rough striking a rock. He then came back too soon and
reinjured it again. I also noted that he had arthroscopic Knee surgury
    last year.

It's really tough to stay at the top in this game as it is really only
a few mistakes or putts that don't drop that tell the difference week
    to week.

I'm glad to see that Greg dominated at Doral... You don't make that
many birdies without having a few putts drop that you don't normally
    expect to make though.

My money's on KITE, COUPLES, and then NORMAN or FALDO for the MASTERS

    Looking forward to it!!!

His injury resulted from hitting a rock in the rough during the
    US Open. 1988!!!
He's been GONE 'cause his head ain't been in it. Too many commitments.

His backswing was noticeably shorter and that's gotta help.
He usually took it to parallel with a wedge.

    	He looked very solid.

    Hi,

US Open 1988!! Boy I love this job... time flys when you're
having fun. I hope I get in a full golf season this year and that way
I can count 1993 as a full year.

Let em fly Greg, like Couples and Kite "You're the MAN!!!"

    Love that statement (NOT)

Spring is Coming!! Thank God, Jim

Norman fizzled out at the Doral Open when on Saturday he chunked his
approach on the 18th hole into the water for a double boggey, never to
be in contention again.

....and now Clinton tears his knee at Norman's house!!!

I say the guy is cursed!!!

Good interview with Greg in the latest GOLF magazine. He's very candid about
last year's Masters, his world standing, how everyone committed to his "World
Tour", then bailed on on him at the last minute, and of course he talks about
the press. Interesting reading.

re: Clinton - now isn't it obvious that Greg provided Bill with
a few too many Fosters - "Australian for beer"...
