1605.0. "Long Ball Hitter" by SAHQ::TROTTER () Wed Oct 28 1992 17:14

Just heard a comment on a pro-golfer last week in Texas who hit a ball
something like 750 yards. Supposedly it hit a cart path but 750 yards
seems like a very long way. Anyone know the details?

I'm afraid I haven't seen the article, but without a word of a
lie, I was playing with a guy on Wednesday morning who said he
hit a ball 3.5 miles.

He claimed that he stood at the edge of the grand canyon, and
struck this ball 3.5 miles, coming to rest near a small bush.
What I want to know is how could he possibly see an object, 1.68
inches in diameter, come to rest 3.5 miles away ?

To put this is context:-

 a) his name was Wally .... need I say more.

 b) he knew everything about everything. He even claimed he was
a personal friend of Carl (aka Ken) Olsen. Remember this is
a guy resident in the U.K.

 c) had played a few times with Arnold Palmer.

 d) handicap was 12 - having just shot a gross 91.

 e) etc.....

    Here's the skinny.

Carl Coper a 787 yd drive on the 3rd hole at Oak Hills, site of the
Texas open. The shot traveled 300 yds in the air and landed on a cart
path, then bounce another 487 yds before it came to rest behind the
    13th green.

Of course the club manufacturer ProGear jumped all over it and has an
ad in this weeks issue of Golf World. "R.I.P. roars into Record Books"

The longest drive is: A MILE AND A HALF!!

And that was set in the artic circle when the ball hit ice and shot
    along the smooth surface.

Speaking of long ball hitters, did anybody watch the Merrill Lynch
shootout yesterday? On Hole #3 a 313 yrd par 4, John Daly takes out
his driver and lands on the green. For those who didn't see it the hole
is over water to a landing area, you have to carry about 170 and the
landing area is about 100 yrds long. Then there is water again right
before the green, with water on the left and bunkers on the right. So
you have to carry all the way to the green to reach it. It was funny
watching all the other players(7) hitting irons off the tee.

      re: Daly's shot

He had to carry it 260 over the second stretch of water. He
actually hit 300 in the air and it rolled onto the green. It
was fun to watch but overall it wasn't the smartest decision
to go with a driver when there were still 8 players left in
    the shootout.

I had to turn off the tv after 5 holes. Who ended up
winning it? Sluman was incredible for the first part of it!

Rick, Chip Beck finally won it. Jeff Sluman was five under after 5
holes but lost on a chip off on the sixth hole.

How 'bout that course. I found it on the map in Idaho, about 40 miles
    from Spokane WA.
Any west coast noters ever play it?

Jack, lets add it to the list.

What was the name of the course? Something like Cord'da'sar
(french). This course was voted the most scenic golf course resort
in the U.S. The signature hole was unbelievable. A par 3
floating/movable island. The hole can be moved from 100 yrds out to
260 yrds. The pro's played it at 175 yesterday. After you hit and
hopefully land on the green. You take a boat/ferry with a plexiglass
enclosure to the island. You finish up the hole, they when you are
riding back the next group tee's off. They say that it doesn't cause
delays taking a boat back and forth. I believe it was located in
    Idaho.

It was Coeur d'Alene and I'd say from watching that Golf Magazine found
a real winner. The course looked unbelievable - a couple of the Pro's
said they were the best greens they had seen all year - that's quite a
    comment.

It also doubles as a Winter resort - skiing, skating etc in the Winter

I'd love to play this course but it's off to Hilton Head after
    Thanksgiving for the week !

Ken, I'm with you !! The Idaho course looked terrific - and I know the
lake is a great fishing spot. I watched a little golf this weekend and
absolutely fell in love with Kapalua ! Breathtaking golf course.

I'm probably through for the season, unless we travel to the West
coast this winter. If so, I plan to play Bel Air. The year ended kind
of on a down note for me - I was playing the Fox on 11/9 and threw out
my sciatic nerve on the back 9. I was with my fiancee's dad, and was
playing pretty well, but it was cold (25-30) and I started to stiffen
up on the last 4-5 holes. To make a long story short, I hit it right
next to the pin on #18, and watched it bounce 3' in the air (green was
frozen). At that point, I couldn't have hit one more shot. By the time
I got to the car, I could barely get behind the wheel. However, after
spending the next 2 days on my back eating "Nuprin," I started feelin'
better. Things are pretty much back to normal now.
