    Hi,
    
    Glad someone opened this note. Here in Sweden the interest for the
    Dunhill Cup is great since we won last year. Yesterday started with no
    surprises.
    
    I don't remember the results offhand, all I can remember is that Sweden
    beat France 2-1 and England Beat Canada 3-0 in the first round of the
    round robin, but all the other favourites won as well.
    
    It's almost impossible to predict a winner in a tournament of his
    format, but if the weather continues then Scotland, Ireland and England
    must be favoured.
    
    After we won it last year the victory was hailed by some people here as a
    significant success for the young Swedish Golf generation, while others
    more moderately claimed that this tournament has little status, no
    tradition, is controlled by McCormack, the coutries s aren't even
    allowed to pick their own teams, and the players are in it only for the
    money.
    
    What do you say, how significant is the Dunhill Cup?

    As it  often  happens  with  events  where  there  is  no  direct  US
    involvement, the Dunhill Cup has no promotion/visibility here.  It is
    not even on TV.

    The way I found  out about it was by reading the results this morning
    in the paper. BTW, US is 3-0.

    The Americans are looking very good but there are a couple of 
    teams just waiting for the chance of STUFFING them.They will
    probably make it to the semi-final stages then it will get
    a little tougher......
    
    Yes you are right anybody can win with this format...bring back the

    Well freddie got what he deserved,he was slagging o'connor off in the
    national press this morning about how O'connor did'nt hear his opponent
    declaring that he was hitting a provisional ball....O'connor let his
    clubs do the talking and beat couples easily....
    The semi-finals are as follows  USA v England and Australia v Scotland,
    this should prove to bve a good days entertainment.....
    
    BTW  did any off you hear Peter Alliss on the tv,talk about being
    biased it was as if the unthinkable was about too happen (england might
    loose) he was going completely OTT...I thought that commentators were
    meant to be neutral (well almost)   8>)

     The winning team collected 100k per player for their efforts.
    England's captain, Jamie Spence did not win a game in the competition
    but still left with a massive boost to his bank balance. The home fans
    were again disappointed as England defeated the Scots for the 5th time
    in 6 years.

    Are we not in danger of being a bit unfair to Jamie Spence ?
    
    Before casting judgement I would like to ask a couple of questions :-
    
    1. Did Jamie actually let the team down ?
    2. As captain did he deliberately take the more difficult matches ?
    
    Regardless of the answers to these questions I do feel we should all
    not be too hasty in making individual assessments in a team
    performance. Win, lose or draw - if you are in a team, you play for the
    team and accept team results. Just because these were only small teams,
    this principle should still apply.
    
    I have no particular axe to grind but I do like to see fair play.

Ouch.  What did I say.  What did I say.  

I know its getting near Guy Fawkes night, but I certainly didn't 
expect this kind of fireworks.

I stand by what I said.  Its not a personal insult towards Jamie, 
its just that it doesn't seem right to me that someone gets all 
that money for just turning up.  Dunhill would be as well paying 
appearance money.  

Mind you.  If it had happened to Sandy Lyle, or Colin Montgomerie 
or Gordon Brand Jr, I would have thought the format ideal.

O.K. I apologise.  How could I ever have said anything against a 
captain of England ?  To all you English out there, I'm sorry.

	ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (UPI) -- On a day of upsets in the $1.5 million
Dunhill Cup at St. Andrews, the ``Home of Golf'', Paraguay caused the
biggest shock in nine years of the tournament, when it overturned
hosting Scotland in Thursday's opening round-robin action.
	The 1,500-1 outsider from a country with only three golf courses and
just 20 professionals, three of them -- brothers Carlos and Angel Franco
and Raul Fretes -- produced a memorable 2-1 victory over third-seeded
Scotland.
	The victory hinged on a 25-foot birdie putt in the last match by
Fretes on the 18th to post a score of 2-over-par 74 and edge out
European Ryder Cup man Colin Montgomerie by a shot in the stroke-play
format match-play event.
	Carlos Franco had already beaten Scotland's other Ryder Cup player
Sam Torrance in the first match, by producing a 70 to a 74 and Angel
Franco's defeat 77 to 71 to Gordon Brand, Jr. eventually proved
irrelevant as Scotland became the third-seeded team to lose on day one.
	Paraguay plays the sixth-seeded United States Friday in the second of
its group matches.
	The U.S. defeated Wales 3-0 and there were victories for seeded South
Africa (4), England (5), Sweden (7) and Spain (8), but the top seed,
Zimbabwe, fell to Ireland 3-0 and the No. 2 seed Australia was toppled
by Canada in the opening encounter of the day.
	Nick Price, Zimbabwe's 1992 U.S. PGA champion, missed a putt of only
18 inches on the last to bogey and allow Ireland's David Feherty to win
by a shot. Price carded 72 to Feherty's 71 and with Ronan Rafferty
posting 74 to Tony Johnstone's 75 and rookie Paul McGinley beating Mark
McNulty in a playoff at the fourth extra hole, Ireland prevailed in all
three matches.
	Canada needed to win two playoffs after its first player, Richard
Zokol had beaten Peter Senior with a 70 to the Australian's poor 77.
	Jim Rutledge was Canada's hero, as he had been in the Taiwan
qualifying event, when his personal score over the four rounds won him
the individual title.
	Craig Parry's playoff win against Dave Barr gave Australia a
consolation win which may yet prove crucial if the group is decided on
matches won in the event of a tie.
	But it was Paraguay which dominated talk at St Andrews.
	Carlos Franco, who with Angel and four other brothers makes up the
brunt of Paraguay's professional strength, celebrated three birdies in a
faultless back-9 which he completed 3-under-par.
	England's 3-0 victory over Mexico was achieved without any of its
three Ryder Cup men breaking par, world No 1 Nick Faldo the best with a
72 to beat Rafael Alarcon by three shots.
	The U.S. win included a 78 by double major winner Payne Stewart which
would have only beaten four players on the day -- fortunately for Stewart
one of them was his opponent Paul Mayo who hit 80.
	Spain's 2-1 success over Argentina included a 69 by Jose Maria
Olazabal.
	Swede Jesper Parnevik had the best score of the day, a 68, which
included a 5-birdie back-9, to beat Japanese Tetsu Nishikawa by 12

	ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (UPI) -- After surviving a dramatic morning
semifinal against Sweden Sunday the United States went on to defeat
England in fast-fading light in the $1.5m Dunhill Cup final.
	A mistake as late as the 17th hole in the semifinal by Sweden's
Anders Forsbrand, let in former U.S. Masters champion Fred Couples for
victory, giving the U.S. a 2-1 victory.
	Couples fashioned one of two American victories in the afternoon
which earned a second U.S. success in the nine-year-old event, following
the American triumph of 1989.
	Couples overcame world No. 1 Nick Faldo by a single shot, posting 4-
under-par 68, his second good return of the day.
	But he was rarely threatened by the Englishman after taking an early
two-stroke advantage. Birdies on the third and fifth kept him ahead of
Faldo throughout their match, but two birdie-fours on the only two Old
Course par-fives, while Faldo could only par, saw Couples prevail.
	In the opening encounter, Mark James easily beat double-major
champion Payne Stewart when he carded a 70 to the American's 74, also
never headed, after moving five shots ahead after five.
	An indifferent back-nine by England's Peter Baker, which he completed
two-over with two bogeys, let John Daly in, and the American, playing
his first Dunhill, increased his advantage by birdieing the last with a
superb approach to only two-feet on the 18th in front of a large
gallery. Daly completed a three-shot success with a 70 to Baker's 73.
	But the U.S. team was fortunate to be in the final.
	In the morning semis, delayed by two hours by frost, Couples trailed
a shot behind Forsbrand with two holes to go. Jesper Parnevik, with the
week's best score, a 66, had already beaten Payne Stewart, and, although
Daly had overcome Joakim Haeggman, the Americans were on the brink of
defeat.
	Forsbrand elected a lefthand line into the notorious 17th and hit
water in the Swilcan Burn, running up a double-bogey to eventually go
two shots down to Couples.
	But the Americans seized their opportunity in the final, making few
mistakes despite the gathering gloom, to end the chances of defending
champion and two-time winner England, which had beaten Ireland easily 3-
0.
	``We beat a great team in the final,'' said Couples, who had the best
record Sunday, with rounds of 67 and 68. ``But we also beat a great team
in the semifinal. Sure, we had a lot of things go for us and we had some
luck, but you need that in this competition to win it.''
	Couples complimented the play of his fellow countrymen.
	``Payne and John played well this week and I feel my game is getting
back. I feel like I'm going to shoot some scores again when I stand on
the tee.''
	Couples' big-hitting earned him four birdies on the Old Course's long
par-fives during the day, two of them, crucially, against Faldo.
	``The Americans played really well,'' said English captain Faldo.
Freddie had me for length on the par-fives and his two birdies proved
crucial. I'm going to spend the winter trying to get 30 yards more on my
drives.``

    How big is  this event in Europe?  US TV monopolies seems to think is

missed a short on on the 16th (looked about 1ft on TV but was probably more)
