1585.0. "Help! Suggestions for golf locales this weekend" by LMOADM::MCGEEHAN () Wed Sep 02 1992 14:51

I'm planning on taking my husband away for an overnight
for his birthday. We're leaving our son with family,
so it's an opportunity for us to unwind too (#2 due in
    November).

Anyway -- we're going this Friday, so time is short on
making a selection. Here's what I'm looking for:

I want to surprise him with reservations at someplace
that either has excellent golf on site, or nearby, and
is within a 3 hour ride of the Worcester area. I'm
hoping for someplace in either NH or Maine. We'll
be leaving Friday by 8 a.m., but will have to be able
to get home for Saturday by 5 p.m.

Any suggestions on places that cover those criteria as
well as having really good atmosphere, food, etc. would
be helpful. Cost isn't the issue -- it's his birthday
present to go do 18 someplace special. It would be great
if it is near either a lake or the ocean too. The biggest
limitation is the travel time. I've read a lot of the
notes available, but can't seem to get a handle on any
place (except Samoset) that seems like it has all I'm looking
for -- and Samoset is too long a ride.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Linda

I'd suggest Equinox, in Manchester, Vermont. Phone # used to be
    (802) 362-3223 at the Golf Shop. If you stay at The Equinox - a 2 min.
walk, just up the street, you get preferred times and a reduced rate.
The Equinox is pricey, but FABULOUS. The course is beautiful, and there
is a lot to do in the area. Course should be in perfect shape right
    now.

I suggest the Queechee Club in Quechee, Vt. It has two incredible golf courses,
and is located a few mile from Woodstock, which has great restaurants, and
shopping, etc. It take about two hours plus to get ther from Boston. Its also
up in the mountains with beautiful views all around.

Sable Oaks in South Portland. Though it has no water amenities it is
on the grounds of the Mariot Hotel, and there is plenty of coast line,
shopping, seafood etc... Your are correct about the Samoset, and Rt. 1
traffic will be a killer this coming Labor Day!!! Arrrgghhh. And so
    will I95 for that matter.

Another suggestion worth considering is Sugarbush Vermont. 2.5 hours
from where you are up 91 to 89. The Sugarbush Inn is a beautiful
Vermont Inn, the Sugarbush Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones Sr.
course, with some of the most beautiful and challenging golf around.
