1565.0. "Trust Gore-Tex" by MRKTNG::VARLEY () Mon Aug 10 1992 14:44

First, Mr. Moderator, please move this to the appropriate note (if
it's been done before). This concerns rainsuits.

Although I've got a Hogan gore-tex suit, other gore-tex pants and
tops, I purchased an Antigua top of the line coated rainsuit this year.
I liked the way it looked, and I figured that for around $125-150
(retail. Who pays retail ?), how bad could it be ? Estupido !! I wore
it fishin' at the Fox on Sunday in a downpur, and in 20 min. or so, my
arms were soaked through. Live and learn, I guess, but the message to
me is clear - if you plan on staying relatively dry and comfortable in
any kind of serios rain, gore-tex is the ONLY way to go. It's
expensive, but it's the last rain suit you'll ever buy. I got mine for
a trip to Ireland a few years back, and, except for wind (and snow at
one hole at Sligo), didn't really need it.

    Jack,
I agree with you, although I recently went to England and bought a
fantastic rainsuit. It wasn't gore-tex but it was designed very
similarly to gore-tex. It is very lightweight and does not have that
"sticky" feel inside when it is raining on the outside. It kept me
completely dry in a monsoon in England! In fact, if I had wanted to I
could have kept wearing the clothes I had on underneath. It cost 90
pounds though. It was worth every penny.

    Mike.

Sounds like one that used to be made in Scotland - "Sutherland," or
something like that. Looked good to me. I'm gettin' too old to put
    fashion ahead of functionality...

Yup--Gore-tex, or Entrant, or other "permeable membrane" fabrics
are the way to go. They keep the water from getting in, but also
let your water vapor (sweat) out. With the coated fabrics, you tend
to get wet from the inside...

I've got "Entrant" too - and while it's better than coated stuff, it
isn't as good as gore-tex. Breathes better, but it isn't the same kind
of construction, i.e., a gore-tex layer sandwiched between two other
    layers.

    I must agree....its got to be gore-tex.I recently purchased a Pro-Quip
rainsuit its very light, doesnt inhibit your swing and keeps you dry
    on the inside.

I agree Gortex is the only way to go. Also is is great in cold windy
    weather.

1565.7No No, Mr. Wind...MRKTNG::VARLEYWed Aug 12 1992 13:109
I agree, Phil. Because it is 3 layer construction, it's the best wind
baffle around. Here in New England, we get lots of cold, windy days.
G-Tex is PERFECT for them - in fact, I use it a hell of a lot more on
windy days simply because we have so much more of 'em. I'd much rather
play in wind than rain; in fact, if it's raining (unless I'm playing a
special course that I might not get to play again), I just bag it. At
least you can hold on to the club in the wind...

I doubt it, Tavo - and I'm an equipment (and gore-tex) freak. If you
had a GOOD gore-tex jacket that fit correctly and was properly
ventilated, I think you'd be fine. After one or two swings, you'd
forget all about it. There is such a thing as a gore-tex sweater...

Jack,
Is the Gore-tex sweater water-proof?

Tavo

P.S. Apologies for the formating of .8. I entered it for the first time
from my PC using the PATHWORKS conferencing tool and it doesn't have a
good editor.

Well, actually, if you're not adverse to wearing surf
gear, you could pick a goretex wetsuit vest.

The g-tex sweater IS waterproof. There's another waterproof sweater
around now, but it isn't g-tex. I know that Eastern Mountain Sports
used to sell the G-tex sweaters.
