1544.0. "North East Amateur" by MRKTNG::VARLEY () Fri Jun 26 1992 17:46

For those of you who are interested in Amateur Golf and truly great
courses, an annual event is taking place as I write this. The NorthEast
Amateur is being held (as it always) at Wannamoisett in Rumford, R.I.
This event is probably one of the best amateur tournaments in the
country, and always attracts a strong field - especially college
players from all over the U.S. Kite and Crenshaw have played, as have
    many others.

Although I haven't played Wannamoisett (maybe this summer - I'm
workin' on it), it is reputed to be one of Donald Ross' very best. Par
is 69 (one par 5), and it's about 6550-6650 from the tips. No one tears
    it up, however.

The final rounds are this weekend, so I thought I'd let y'all know.
I'm gettin' ready to move (just bought a house), so my time is,
    unfortunately, "spoken for."

Marc Forbes, who regularly wins the club championship at
Wannamoisett, is an old working buddy of mine. I see him
around town every now and then (he's a 14 time winner of
the Attleboro area golf tournament)... Anyway, Marc plays
in the NorthEast Amateur and usually is competitive.. but
not in the class of the top 10. (I think he finished 7th
    	one year).

As --Jack pointed out, what a course!

Smitty, when you're playing in a field that includes guys like Alan
Doyle, Jay Sigel and David Duval, just finishing in the top 25 is an
honor ! I watched Sigel destroy a college kid a few years back in the
U.S. Amateur Final at The Country Club. What a player - he hit
everything perfect ! He's older now, but Jay is still a player!

Don't know if Wannamoisett will work out for my pal "The Judge" and
me. Might be one of those places you always wanted to play that just
doesn't happen. We've still got a full slate of real good courses, but
    nothing much better than Wannamoisett...

1544.3Courses in or around NarragansettCSLALL::TERRIOMon Jun 29 1992 14:525

I am vacationing in Narragansett this summer. Can someone tell mw
about any of the courses in that area. I have heard about Exeter CC?
Any info? How much it costs weekdays? Toughness of course? How many
    yards?

Didn't Allen Doyle originally come from Norwood Ma?

    Anybody know him?

Yes Allen did come from Norwood - he played high school golf @ Catholic
Memorial but I lost track of him until I started reading about him on
the national scene in GA - state am. champ etc. Has only improved with
    age, like Segal.

If he is the guy I think I know then he was a top amateur candlepin
bowler - cross out the amateur as there is no distinction to my
    knowledge.
Larry Bird once said that the ability to work hard and focused is a
talent in itself and this is possibly the case with mr. doyle.
