1525.0. "Digital Challenge CUP" by MRKTNG::LUCIANO (RICH LUCIANO @TTB) Mon May 18 1992 13:19

    Is there any talk this year to the fourth annual Digital Challenge Cup?

    The other three Challenge Cups Tournaments were 18 hole two-person
    scrambles.

    Is there a volunteer to run it this year?

    Where do I sign up?

    If I put a Digital Challenge Cup together, will anyone play???

    Yes, you can probably count on 10 - 12 people from SHR.....

      Rich, sorry I'm late in on this but work and life in general
      have been hectic in recent weeks. Doesn't look like I'll have
      time to run it this year but I'll certainly will help out some.
      Some things I'd like to see this year:

        - Would like to see it as a late season outing again (October).
          August/September is too full for me and I probably won't be
          able to play. Wouldn't Shattuck in October when the foliage
          is at peak be spectacular?
        - Have a limit of 72 players (36 teams). The rounds have taken
          too long the last couple of years (6-7 hours).
        - To get back to the original concept of the Challenge Cup, only
          those teams that feel they have a legitimate shot at winning
          should sign up.
        - Everybody play from the tips no matter where we play (Shattuck
          included).
        - Less emphasis on food, prizes and more on the golf. Keep it
          simple. How about just having the cups up for grabs.

    I have been asked by several of the guys from Hudson who played last
    year (about 5 foursomes) when and if the Cup would be played this
    year!! They all hoped that it would be a return to Shattuck Inn!!

    Nelly

    P.S. If you are considering another shotgun, Rick's suggestion of a
    limit of 72 golfers would hinder any such attempt....I doubt you'd find
    a course allowing a shotgun for only 72 greens fees....144 is usually
    standard!!

I'd certainly be interested. However, I may need a different partner
if we play Shattuck. My partner was not too psyched about Shattuck.

Turns out my partner wants a second chance at Shattuck so we'd be in for
sure (unless other conflicts arise with the date).

    If I can find a partner willing to head North, The Texas contingency
    would like to be included. If you can plan something for the weekend of
    Aug 15/16 I'll be in town for NetU. If not, I'll be in touch with those
    regulars and maybe I can find a game.

1525.12Summertime!!USPMLO::DESROCHERSThu Jun 11 1992 20:189

    	October s*cks! Last year was freezing cold. I thought
    	golf was a summer game!?!?

    	Move it up to July or August - why wait 4 months for a
    	day in the mid 40's ??

    	Tom

1525.13VolunteersMRKTNG::LUCIANORICH LUCIANO @TTBFri Jun 12 1992 11:4918
    So far...no volunteers to organize and run the 1992 Challenge Cup!

    If I were to run it AGAIN, I'd run it at Skymeadow in Nashua, NH on
    August 11...no meals...no discussions...just great golf and prizes for
    low gross:
    	 - mens team
    	 - womens team
    	 - mixed team

    From experience, the biggest problem with running a tournament is
    gaining consensus (rules, format, prizes, playing conditions, etc). It
    becomes an easy task if I post the rules early...and anyone who wants
    to play by those rules is welcome to play.

    Do you want me to organize it?

    FYI...Skymeadow was voted best course in NH...and its in great shape!

1525.14Yes, please do!GIAMEM::SHUMANMon Jun 15 1992 14:554
    Rich....what you have offered to do is fair. I would be willing to play
    under these conditions.

    To be a little more direct and blunt. Given what is going to be
  happening to Digital in the next quarter, do you think it is wise to
  schedule a golf tournament at a time when a lot of people are going to be
  laid off?

   There are some that will say that a tournament like this would be a
  morale booster or something that will take the mind off the pressures
  at work, however, my heart and enthusiasm won't be in it and my thoughts
  will be for friends and colleagues that might be leaving the company
  shortly. Maybe in Q2, the picture may be a bit different and brighter?

   Sorry for the gloominess, but these are gloomy days at DEC.

    If I am out of work, I'd look forward to seeing old friends on the golf
    course.

    As a wise person once said....

    "Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things
     turn out".

    Look forward to seeing you at the Challenge Cup.
